The first telephone I remember had no dial at all. You simply picked up the handset and the operator said "number please". You gave her the number and she placed the call. Also was a party line..I still remember our number...444-R4...There were certain people on the line who always listened in..We lived in the sticks on a dairy farm...

I "retired" from dairy farming at age 18.. Joined the Navy and never looked back..Couldn't see milking cows every 12 hours for the rest of my life. Plus at that time, early 60's, there was no profit whatsoever.

Old Fart Story: When I was in elementary school our teacher let us skip school to watch the World Series. A friend's family got the first color tv in town. Dodgers verses Yankees (I believe) in LA, greenest grass I've ever seen.
