Chart: 10 schools have allowed fewer than 25 points per game for 4 straight years

Which FBS schools have consistently produced the best defenses? The bar for a good defensive performance has changed in today’s game. These schools have allowed fewer than 25 points per game for four straight years.

2013-16%2025%20ppg%20D.png

Some takeaways

- All of these teams made a bowl game in all four years, except for 2013 Florida. It also includes the three College Football Playoff national champions.

- 5 of these schools will have a new defensive play-caller in 2017: Florida (Randy Shannon), Houston (Mark D’Onofrio), Louisville (Peter Sirmon), Ohio State (Greg Schiano alone) and Wisconsin (Jim Leonhard).

- Of the 5 play-callers who moved jobs, Geoff Collins became Temple head coach, Todd Orlando became Texas DC, Todd Grantham became Mississippi State DC, Luke Fickell became Cincinnati head coach, and Justin Wilcox became Cal head coach.

- Dave Aranda is on this list twice, running Wisconsin’s D from 2013-15 and then LSU last year.

- Justin Wilcox ran Washington’s D in 2013 and Wisconsin’s in 2016, sandwiched around two years at USC. Now he’s the Cal head coach.

- Ohio State’s streak actually goes back all the way to 1989, per College Football Reference. LSU’s streak goes to 1999, Alabama’s to 2004 and Florida’s to 2008.

- Alabama is the only one to allow fewer than 20 ppg in this stretch, and that streak goes all the way back to 2008.

- Alabama, Clemson, Ohio State and Washington have also scored at least 30 ppg in four straight years.

I still think the players talent bailed Collins out and he isn't a great playcaller at all. We will drop on defense this season but it will be due to talent dropoff not anything to do with Collins leaving. Just look at how he performed many times against equal or slightly better talent when it came to giving up yards and points.

I'm very concerned that this streak will end this year, but like you said, it won't be because of Collins leaving. Mac's first two classes were not strong defensively, and I think that will bite him this year. Hope I'm wrong.

Look at this list, Talent Defenses vers questionable offenses... what offensive team has really been that

Been saying it for two years, Collins wasn't a fit. If he didn't have exceptional talent it would have been harsh. At no point should a Florida Defense give up 50, regardless of the offense.

Edit: I had erased the SECCG from my mind.

It's been a hell of a lot longer than 4 years since we've given up more than 25 points/game in a season.

Weren't there a couple non-offensive touchdowns sprinkled in there in that game? Defense didn't give up all 50.

How many schools have been in the bottom third of offenses since 2009 or 2010?

Ummmm.....if you read the entire thing it says "since 2008" regarding UF.

With the Talent we had on Defense, still shouldn't gone over 50. Or was Alabama's offense that good?

Agree, but.....Alabama's D scored 7 and their ST's scored 7. Their D set up a couple of other scores.....

Sidehat set records at both stops for most yards given up and worst blowout.

Good resume stuff.

Three interceptions by AA, one returned for a TD. And a blocked punt returned for a TD. And we were missing 5? starters on defense. And yet none of that excuses Collins. Glad he's gone. Here's to hoping Shannon can do more with less.

Oh, I wasn't making excuses for Collins. It's like the Outback Bowl. We "put up 31 points". But, the offense scored twice in that game and gained less yard than their 116th ranked average for the season! (the D scored and set up the other scores).

There will be a drop off this year on D, but hopefully the O (finally) produces.

How many points did Bama have in the early part of the game despite having -7 yards or something? Special teams and Appleby interceptions had a ton to do with the score. Can't lay all - maybe not even most - of that on the defense.
