Florida recruiting: Out-of-state 2020 QB TJ Finley visiting Monday

    https://www.seccountry.com/florida/florida-football-recruiting-tj-finley-visit

QB TJ Finley checking out Florida
The Gators will host a fast-rising junior from Louisiana on Monday.

TJ Finley, a 2020 quarterback from Ponchatoula, La., plans to visit Florida before heading back home. He traveled to the Sunshine State this weekend to compete at the adidas East Coast Invitational in Miami. Finley measured in at 6-foot-6, 220 pounds and put on an impressive performance.

Finley is unrated at this time, but that likely will change soon. He currently holds nine scholarship offers, including Alabama, Arkansas, Auburn, LSU and Louisville.

Finley received an offer from Florida coach Dan Mullen when he was at Mississippi State, and running backs coach Greg Knox served as his primary recruiter. The Gators could be the next team to offer Finley, who also visited Miami on Saturday.

Gators will host more QBs this month
Finley won’t be the only quarterback to visit Florida in the coming weeks.

Spring practice begins on Friday, and the Gators will host several recruits throughout the month, including 4-star QB Taisun Phommachanh (Bridgeport, Conn.) and 3-star QB David Baldwin (Bradenton, Fla.).

Phommachanh, the nation’s No. 1 dual-threat passer according to 247Sports, is scheduled to visit the Gators on March 20 and Florida State on March 21. Baldwin plans to attend one of Florida’s practices as well.

Another signal caller who will visit this spring is 3-star QB Jalon Jones (Baltimore), who was committed to Mullen when he was at Mississippi State. Ohio State has emerged as Florida’s biggest competition for Jones.

He received an offer from the Buckeyes on March 2 and visited Columbus the following day. For a full breakdown of Florida’s quarterback targets in the 2019 class, click here.

4-star DE to visit UF again
Four-star defender planning return visit to UF

    https://florida.247sports.com/Bolt/...DE-Derick-Hunter-to-visit-UF-again--116122292

After making a stop to the University of Florida last month for their 'Junior Day', Fort Myers (Fla.) Dunbar four-star defensive end Derick Hunter is set to visit the Gators again this weekend for their opening weekend of spring football practices.

The former Miami commit backed off that early verbal pledge and has continued to be pursued by several programs. For now the Georgia Bulldogs and in-state Gators seem to be the teams in the best position in his recruitment currently. Penn State is also another team in the mix and is in line for an official visit at some point as well.

The 247Sports Composite, an industry generated average, currently ranks Hunter as the Nation's No. 185 overall prospect in the 2019 recruiting class.

    https://www.seccountry.com/florida/florida-recruiting-derek-stingley-jr-top-6-updates

Gators a finalist for CB Derek Stingley Jr.
For the third time in four years, the Gators are in contention for an elite cornerback from the state of Louisiana.

Florida came close to landing 5-star CB Kristian Fulton in the Class of 2016, but he chose LSU on National Signing Day. The Gators had luck the following year with 4-star CB Brad Stewart, who became just the second Louisiana recruit to sign with Florida since 2001.

Their latest target from the Pelican State is Derek Stingley Jr., a 5-star cornerback from Dunham School in Baton Rouge, La. Florida was one of six finalists Stingley named on Sunday, along with Georgia, LSU, Michigan, Stanford and Texas.

Florida is expected to receive one of his five official visits, but will need to wow him on that trip. Despite making the cut for Stingley, the Gators and others have ground to make up on the in-state Tigers.

He called LSU his top school last week in an interview with SEC Country’s Chris Kirschner.

“LSU is my leader,” Stingley said. “Everyone else still has a shot, though. If those schools keep working like they have, then we’ll see how things turn out, but right now, LSU leads.”

Perhaps that can change between now and National Signing Day, just as it did last year with 5-star cornerback Patrick Surtain Jr. He spurned LSU for Alabama after favoring the Tigers throughout the process.

The Gators have a huge need at cornerback in the 2019 class, so they can sell Stingley on early playing time. If Stewart emerges as a starter this season and has success, that also could make an impression on Stingley and help Florida’s chances with him.

He committed to LSU on the spot in June 2016, but reopened his recruitment last April after adding offers from Alabama, Florida and Florida State. Stingley is ranked the nation’s No. 2 cornerback and No. 19 overall prospect in the 247Sports composite.

      Recruiting roundup
      • Florida is one of six finalists for 5-star Class of 2019 cornerback Derek Stingley Jr., along with Georgia, LSU, Michigan, Stanford and Texas. The Baton Rouge, La., product, who is ranked the No. 2 CB in the class by the 247Sports composite, is leaning toward the hometown Tigers, telling SEC Country’s Chris Kirschner, “LSU is my leader. Everyone else still has a shot, though. If those schools keep working like they have, then we’ll see how things turn out, but right now, LSU leads.” Read more here.
      • Kayvon Thibodeaux, a 5-star defensive end from Thousand Oaks, Calif., and the No. 1-ranked prospect overall in the Class of 2019 (by the 247Sports composite), tweeted that he’s visiting Gainesville this weekend. Abolverdi caught up with Thibodeaux last week. Read more about his thoughts on the Gators’ chances of signing him.
      • Meanwhile, Class of 2020 QB TJ Finley, from Ponchatoula, La., tweeted photos from his visit to Florida on Monday. Abolverdi wrote about Finley in advance of his visit. Read more here.
      • Gator Country’s Andrew Spivey talked to Class of 2019 QB target Garrett Shrader, from Charlotte, N.C. Shrader is ranked as a 3-star prospect and the No. 13 dual-threat QB in the class, according to the 247Sports composite. He’s been in contact with Mullen and Florida QBs coach Brian Johnson. “He said he likes my film,” Shrader told Spivey. “He said he’s really excited about me and wants to get me down there. I probably talk to Coach Johnson more than Coach Mullen, but I talk with both.” Read more here.
      • Class of 2021 athlete Kamar Wilcoxson, from Stone Mountain, Ga., is visiting Florida this weekend, he tweeted.
      • Class of 2020 defensive end Josh Griffis, a Gators commit from Green Cove Springs, Fla., will also be in Gainesville.

This is a new QB on the radar:

Shrader intrigued by Mullen’s history with quarterbacks

        https://www.gatorcountry.com/feature/shrader-intrigued-by-mullens-history-with-quarterbacks/

Dan Mullen and the Florida Gators are about to start spring practice but the Gators are also in the middle of recruiting for the 2019 class.

One of the big positions the Gators are recruiting is the quarterback position and quarterback Garrett Shrader (6-4, 200, Charlotte, NC. Christian) is a guy that is on the board for Florida.

“I’ve been talking to Florida,” Shrader said. “I talk to Coach [Brian] Johnson mainly and Coach [Dan] Mullen every now and then. I was speaking with Coach Mullen while he was still at Mississippi State too.”

Shrader has spoken with Mullen several times and the Gators head coach has explained what he likes about the quarterback.

“He said he likes my film,” he said of what Mullen says to him. “He said he’s really excited about me and wants to get me down there. I probably talk to Coach Johnson more than Coach Mullen but I talk with both.”

Quarterbacks coach Brian Johnson has also explained what he likes about Shrader and why the Gators need someone like him in Gainesville.

“Same message as what Coach Mullen says, he’s excited about me and liked my film,” Shrader said of Johnson’s message to him. “He said I would be a great fit and there is a big need for a leader at quarterback at Florida.”

Shrader has done his research on Mullen and his history with quarterbacks and that’s something that has caught the quarterback’s attention.

“He’s a great developer of quarterbacks,” he said of Mullen. “He loves the quarterback run and that’s very intriguing to me. I want to compete early and I love the spread run game.”

With colleges starting spring practices around the country, Shrader is planning several visits.

“I have planned to visit West Virginia, Penn State and Mississippi State,” Shrader said of visits. “I just visited South Carolina last week and I will attend their spring game. I would like to get to Florida. I went to camp there two years ago.”

Shrader has a long time before he has to make a decision but the quarterback wants to make an early one so he can help his future school recruit.

“I want to make a decision by June,” he said. “All is open now but I want to make a decision and help recruit the class. I also plan to graduate in December to enroll in January wherever I choose.”

INSIDERS TAKE: South Carolina seems to be the school with the most buzz about them but a visit to Florida could get the Gators in the mix for Shrader. Mississippi State was a school he was high on when Mullen was there.

Not very excited about this, but is there something I don't know about this kid? High three-star. Not an extensive offer list, but it includes tOSU and Climpson.

I think he's been a tweener (he was listed as a Safety up until recently, now he's a LB). He needs to put on a little weight, but he's still a junior in HS. He just competed in a camp and was noted as the best LB there. He'll be a 4-star. He's ranked 55th (I think) in state, so that likely moves up into the top 50 - which I'm fine with. If Ohio State and Clemson are sniffing around he's good. But I agree, I'd rather it be a top 50 national kid (than state of Florida kid).

Just looked at his tape and it's not bad. He has a tendency to leave his feet when he runs (hurdled two tacklers), which puts him at risk for injury, but he's pretty athletic. Allegedly runs a 4.5 40. Throws on-time on the quick hitters and seems to look thru his progressions well. I like the way he lets the routes develop.

Gotcha. Yeah, he's in the mid-500's right now. Good to hear the camp news...that should help his rating.

              Jake Fromm's brother...

Fromm sees a winning mindset from the Florida Gators coaching staff

              https://www.gatorcountry.com/featur...ndset-from-the-florida-gators-coaching-staff/

Head coach Dan Mullen was able to bring in several out of state prospects for the Florida Gators junior day last month and that included several players from the state of Georgia.

Tight end Tyler Fromm (6-5, 225, Warner Robins, GA. High) was one of those prospects on campus and he enjoyed junior day.

“I had a great time on the visit,” Fromm said on his junior day visit. “I pretty much got a tour of the campus and all of the facilities that are related to football. I talked to a lot of coaches too.”

While on campus, Fromm got the chance to talk to several coaches including head coach Dan Mullen.

“I met and talk with a majority of the coaches,” he said. “The main ones I spoke to were Coach [Larry] Scott, Coach [John] Hevesy and Coach Mullen.”

Tight ends’ coach Larry Scott spoke at length with Fromm about how Florida uses the position in Mullen’s offense.

“He basically told me Florida’s offense throws the ball around to the tight ends a lot,” Fromm said of Scott’s message to him. “He thinks I would be a great fit for them in the offense.”

Scott also explained to Fromm that the Gators need numbers at tight end in the 2019 class.

“He told me about the depth and need at tight end,” he said of Scott’s message about needing tight ends this year. “He said two out of the three they have are going to be seniors and he needs to have six on the roster.”

Mullen also spoke with Fromm and his family during the visit and expressed a lot of interest in the tight end.

“He was excited to me have me down in Gainesville,” Fromm said of Mullen’s message to him. “He showed a lot of interest in me when I was down there.”

Fromm is the younger brother of Georgia quarterback Jake Fromm so the Gators had some work to do in order to get the tight end on campus but once on campus he was impressed by Florida.

“After speaking with Coach Scott a few times before going down there I knew I needed to visit,” he said on why he decided to visit Florida. “The visit definitely sparked my interest after meeting all the coaches and getting to see the place.”

While on campus, Fromm had the chance to watch the Gators coaching staff interact with people and he walked away impressed by them.
“The coaches at Florida to me have a strong desire to win,” Fromm said of the Florida coaching staff. “They’re going to work hard to make it happen.”

Junior day likely won’t be the last time that the Gators host Fromm on campus this spring as he’s already looking at another visit to Gainesville.

“We’re planning on trying to make it to the spring game,” he said on if he plans to return to Florida.

INSIDERS TAKE: Fromm didn’t want to name a leader or any top group but said that he doesn’t have a timeline for a decision at this time.

Florida mailbag: Gators in contention for 5-star recruits Kayvon Thibodeaux, Chris Steele

              https://www.seccountry.com/florida/florida-recruiting-kayvon-thibodeaux-chris-steele

The state of Califorinia has four 5-star recruits in the Class of 2019, and Florida has offered every one of them.

In addition to 5-star defensive end Kayvon Thibodeaux (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) and 5-star cornerback Chris Steele (Bellflower, Calif.), the Gators are also pursuing 5-star linebacker Henry To’oto’o (Concord, Calif.) and 5-star athlete Bru McCoy (Santa Ana, Calif.).

Florida already has secured visits from Steele and Thibodeaux. Thibodeaux will take a trip to Gainesville this weekend for the start of spring football and plans to return for an official visit in the fall. Steele plans to officially visit Florida on Sept. 8 for the Kentucky game.

Gators coach Dan Mullen is personally recruiting both Steele and Thibodeaux along with his assistant coaches, which is worth noting. Mullen probably wouldn’t put in the extra effort to recruit players from California if he didn’t feel like Florida had a shot to land them.

The fact that Steele and Thibodeaux already have scheduled trips shows that there’s mutual interest on their part. The Gators need to make a strong and lasting impression on Thibodeaux this weekend, but I think they have a legitimate chance if the visits wows him.

Many recruits take official visits to out-of-state schools and treat those trips like vacations. But when a 5-star prospect makes an unofficial visit across the country on his own dime, that’s showing some serious initiative and interest in the program.

In addition to his September trip, Steele is considering an unofficial visit to Florida in the spring or summer. If he makes multiple trips to Gainesville, the Gators could be in position to steal another 5-star recruit from the West Coast.

What more do you need to know?

That he isn't a last minute low three star that we're stealing from FIU after trying to recruit 6 other guys until February. That's good to know also.

Mullen encouraging recruits to attend practice
Spring practice begins this week for the Florida football team and the first two practices are open to the public.

The Gators are expected to host several top targets this weekend, including 5-star defensive end Kayvon Thibodeaux and 4-star defensive end Derick Hunter. After months of bringing recruits to town for official visits and campus tours, Florida coach Dan Mullen is ready to show them a different aspect of the program.

“I think it’s huge,” Mullen said of recruits attending practices. “I tell recruits this all the time: You want to come and take a visit, kind of find out about the school. But you want to come and watch a practice and see how we coach, see if you fit into that style.

“I’m not going to, really, change who I am. I mean, a little bit. I’m always trying to prove myself and better myself, but I am who I am and all of our coaches, you are who you are.”

Mullen added that games and official visits are important parts of the process, but recruits don’t get to see the coaches in their element during those types of trips. Finding the right coaching style is a determining factor for many players.

“I always encourage them to come so you can watch us coaching them hands on,” Mullen said. “Do you like how we coach? The style we use, do you fit into that? And then come to a game-day atmosphere and see what game day in The Swamp is all about.

“And then you come on an official visit, get to hang around and be a part of the program, like be treated as a football player for 48 hours. I always encourage guys to do that and that’s a huge part of them coming up here for spring. Just seeing what we’re like out there on the field as coaches to see if their personality fits our style of coaching.”

If we don't land this kid at QB I'm curious who would be #1 on the QB board:

                    QB Jalon Jones nearing decision
One of Florida’s top quarterback targets reportedly will make his decision next month.

The father of 3-star quarterback Jalon Jones told 247Sports’ Steve Wiltfong that his son wants to commit and shut down his recruitment by the end of April. Jones’ father also said that Florida, North Carolina State, Ohio State and Virginia are the four schools he’s focusing on.

This development puts pressure on the Gators to get Jones on campus in a hurry. He committed to Mullen last year when he was at Mississippi State, but has yet to visit Gainesville since landing an offer from Florida on Dec. 11.

Jones visited Virginia on Feb. 10 and will be back for a spring practice. He received an offer from the Buckeyes on March 2 and visited Ohio State the following day, making plans to return on March 29.

The 6-foot-3, 180-pound signal caller has stated that Florida will receive an official visit, but no date has been set. With Jones reportedly moving up his commitment timeline, Mullen likely will push for him to make that trip in April.
