What Florida coach Jim McElwain said at his Monday news conference

https://www.seccountry.com/florida/florida-coach-jim-mcelwain-said-monday-news-conference

He is meeting with reporters, where he’ll be asked for an update on suspensions, injuries and more about that momentous win.

Follow along here for live updates.

  • “It was just great to be back in The Swamp after, what was it, 300 and whatever days it was, 308 days. The fans, the people that put the time in and made the effort to make the game happen, and I think ultimately The Swamp, the atmosphere, the fans had as much to do with us winning that ballgame as anything.”
  • “Now the key is to build on that, get ready to go play on the road against a team that’s won a bunch of games in their last bit, have been playing as well as anyone is in the league. It’s going to be a crazy place. I know they’re looking forward to it. Our guys have got to understand in order for us to go in and play well and with confidence, we’ve got to do the things we need to do in practice this week to give us an opportunity going against a really good team.
  • “The job Mark (Stoops) has done there is incredible. You can see after those years, his guys, the way they play, the athletes they have. We felt after the season last year when we went back and did our total recap they had some of the best skill of anybody we played.”
  • Injuries: CB Duke Dawson (head) is “highly questionable, obviously. We’ll see where that is throughout the week, but he won’t go today.” … LB Kylan Johnson (hamstring) is doubtful. ‘He’ll probably be down again.” … WR James Robinson (heart) is being flown to a specialist this week.
  • “I think with Duke being down it’s really going to put the onus on those young guys ,as you saw a lot of them play last week to really pick up their communication and not rely on him.”
  • On clock management late in game: “That was on me obviously. A guy on our sideline pulled up the first down marker so I thought it was dead at that point. That’s on me. We knew where we needed to get to. That was the reason for saving the two (timeouts), thinking it was a dead clock.”
  • On volume of sideline passes and screens: “I think more so what the defense was giving us too, especially to the field. They were playing off to the field, which is something we’ve seen, especially on first and second down.”
  • On Tyrie Cleveland: “I think the biggest thing is he’s kind of really invested in getting in shape, No. 1, No. 2 understanding the position and playing with some technique where (before) I think he was able to get away with just running fast. … He’s a fun guy to be around. Here’s what I like, he’s learned how to practice and by learning how to practice that becomes confidence in games. I think the biggest thing now is people have to be aware of that position.”
  • On Feleipe Franks: “There were six critical plays where just take what the defense is giving you, don’t predetermine where it’s going to go. In particular, Kadarius got hot, they jumped on him and we had a huge play over the top. … Obviously the interception was designed, it should have gone somewhere else. And we had a critical third down he tried to force into BP where the read was clearly on the other side. You can’t predetermine it.”
  • On CB C.J. Henderson: “He’s obviously been in there and he’s had a pretty expanded role anyway. Obviously it puts some pressure on us. … (C.J. McWilliams) is a guy obviously we’ll have to get more out of.” Brad Stewart and Quincy Lenton will be involved at nickel.
  • On Luke Del Rio being backup QB: “He’s healthy. That’s the big thing. That doesn’t mean Malik (Zaire) is buried down at the bottom. There’s things (we have) ready for him as well. We’re prepared for whatever may move forward.”
  • On Kentucky: “I’ve seen it come a long ways. When I look all the way back, this is a totally different Kentucky football team.”
  • On Jachai Polite’s hustle play: “He was actually one of our defensive players of the game. It’s interesting, when you look at that singular play. The guy made some guys miss, made a heck of a play. When you look at it, both he and Kyree (Campbell) who were at the line of scrimmage were the two guys who got to the ball carrier because they never quit. … If he’s not there and Kyree’s not there, that guy scores. It kind of puts a smile on your face.”
  • On Feleipe Franks: “He’s got confidence. He’s got confidence in himself. He’s got confidence in the guys around him. Him growing up playing all the different sports, being the guy that had the ball on the mound, playing in championships, I think that has a lot to do with it.”
  • On RB Malik Davis: “He brings a little juice, no doubt. He’s a little b it different. He’s a slasher. He does a really good job of sticking his foot in the ground and running through arm tackles. With a lot of these young guys, expanding their role as they continue to learn. No one felt worse after the game than he did.”
  • On what Franks has done to seize the QB job: “I think it’s a complete maturation and body of work from the time he was here as an early enrollee. He’s done a good job of getting better, especially with his feet, his knowledge. I think I’ve already talked about the six plays, he’s got to make three of those six next week, then he’s got to make four of those six and then you’ve got to be six for six.”
  • Are suspended guys still suspended? “Yeah.”
  • On Chauncey Gardner missing big tackles, was he healthy? “You saw what I saw.”
  • On Kadarius Toney: “In his case, learning a new position, you overload guys and then they paralyze themselves. You bit by bit. What’s helped him is playing the quarterback position. … He’s never been a receiver, but he’ll continue to learn and as he does that that part keeps coming.”
  • On 30-game winning streak over Kentucky: “I’ll let you guys talk about it. Every year it’s different. Right now it’s 0-0.”

A few more great moments

Mac starts going on and on at one point....reporter said my eyes were glazing over there a bit what you said. Mac, "well you asked a question" Reporter says, "I was joking."

Cleveland has worked hard to learn how to practice and run fast....gosh he's a fun guy to be around and yet, people are now aware of him and hopefully can make other guys get open

Mac about offense "get to the line and go....you know, it's uh, when they do that they play pretty good. And yet it's uh, sometimes in life it's not about being afraid to be wrong but rather think what it is to be right and we wait to shoot ourselves. afraid to make a mistake,.....play fast and don't be afraid to make a mistake. We'll get their but there is a lot of work"

Malik brings the juice etc, etc, and yet he'll learn from it

Late in the game we didn't tackle worth a hill of beans

Someone asked him if he's bummed about something other than the offense Mac "i apologize if I'm not doing something right"

How do you run more plays? Mac "convert on 3rd down to run more plays"

So Dooley asked Mac what the play call was on the last play. Mac said what it was (same play call in 2015) and Dooley said they should run it more. Mac gave a snarky, yeah I'm with ya I've thought about it

Apparently every defense in college football since Mac has arrived gives us this look on every single snap we take.

Florida CB Duke Dawson tweets he’s playing vs. Kentucky, but Gators also confident in backups

https://www.seccountry.com/florida/florida-confidentyoung-dbs-09182017

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Florida coach Jim McElwain said Monday that he isn’t sure if senior cornerback Duke Dawson will play against Kentucky on Saturday.

Dawson, on the other hand, is attempting to make it clear that there’s no reason he would sit out.

McElwain said Dawson would be “highly questionable” for the Gators after sustaining a head injury during Florida’s 26-20 win over Tennessee. He left the game midway through the fourth quarter and did not return.

“We’ll see where that is as we go throughout the week,” McElwain said, “but he won’t go today.”

After the announcement came out, Dawson took to Twitter in an attempt to clear the air.

Everything is fine, I will be playing this upcoming Saturday against UK.

I'm just gonna put this out there. This is the 2nd time I can think of in the past 2-3 weeks where a player has come out on twitter in direct conflict with what Mac says in a presser. That's blatant disrespect for your coach. You don't go correcting him in public. Even if you believe you are 100% correct. You just don't do that. We have a pretty serious discipline problem imo.

Who cares about his press relations, sure it would be better to be different. I saw a team that really cares about their coach and that means a lot. If we can actually get execution where it needs to be and mistakes limited we have a great chance to improve as the year goes on.

Getting the suspensions behind us is also going to be important, no matter who is lost.

Geez, is Mac despicable in concepts & wording? He's an uninvested HC of young emotionally ready-to-be-motivated youngsters. He always chooses the impersonal: it, they, that, what it is.... In sentence 2 he expands on the nothing that he uttered in sentence 1 (as if that gives you something to work with).

-- side by side in one sentence he says "the fans, the people" (not the same?)> our fans would be personal use.

-- uses hollow-empty wordings: "won a bunch of their last bit"?? Use the concepts of CFB --- you know that thingy injury.

--"They're looking forward to it." = that refers to either our players or UK's players & fans. Take your guess, listeners.

-- "I'll tell you, our guys have got to understand ada, yada, yada" So he's just telling them, not making them drill & redrill?

-- "Stoops is doing a wonderful job there." i.e. he's developing an ever more SEC competitive team out of lesser athletes.

-- Dawson is highly questionable. We'll see thru-out the week how highly less questionable he becomes? = adds nothing.

-- He dist FF for INT "because he threw it to the wrong side; you can't predetermine that"[so, not coach's fault] ... well, you could teach against it in practices, "QB-guruse".

-- on the volume (xs) of sideline passes & screens: "We were taking what the D was giving us" {= 2-3 yards gains.}

-- "Main thing? Confidence ... I've told them again & again, have confidence." Duhh, Some crazy schools are training players for successful performance & confidence just magically appears. But keep telling them Mac, write it on a card you hold up on the sidelines during the game [Have Confidence].

The guy does not know how deflating he is to all within earshyt. Includes at practices, in locker-room, during game. All those times, early years, I saw Mac with his "buddy-arm" on a players shoulder & thought "what an understanding, teaching coach he is". Now I realize he's just saying press-conf gibberish to the poor player. Out, out damn spot.

That was a big damn deal and it is pretty easy for those guys to give up on that play and not give their all. We didnt see other DL making plays like that. We need to see that heart out of all the guys.

I hope he gives those dudes a start as a reward.

As much as the TD to Cleveland, that play may change the mindset of this team. Learning what it takes to be winners. Its those little things. It also may take the kids dragging our coaches, kickng and screaming, into being something other than incredibly ultra conservative.

I totally agree. I don't think we'd ever see something like this coming from a player at Alabama, or Clemson, or even FSU. It's a reflection of all the other problems going on in the program. Mac just can't get the job done.

Maybe, maybe not. It's highly doubtful that these players watch McElwain's press conference. Dawson could've had a lot of people ask him about his status while in class so he simply decided to clear the air on twitter. I think something like that is more likely than players correcting their coach's press conference.

Yep Mac knows we might lose to Kentucky so he isn't trying to act like we are going to go up there and just stomp them.

Mac is trolling. He tried like hell to play it down again today until they called him on it. Next thing you know he was cracking up. They're trying to cultivate the us against the world mentality. Locker room is getting closer through the negativity.

Franks, Cleveland, Gardner have mentioned it and a great Brandon Powell interview was circulated on twitter.

:bwahaha:

No offense Marine, but this is ridiculous. If the team wasn't so poorly coached and didn't play awful as a result, then there wouldn't be all the negativity.

As far as Dawson goes; I want guys who want to play. Whether the medical staff gives him his helmet back is another story, but I love the heart and desire.
