Another coup for Texas
Texas added to its monster 2018 recruiting haul Saturday, landing coveted Rice grad transfer Calvin Anderson. Tom Herman’s second recruiting class was already No. 3 nationally (247Sports Composite), but his two biggest additions this offseason are Anderson and offensive line coach Herb Hand, who came over from Auburn.
The addition of the 6-foot-5, 300-pound left tackle should smooth the transition for Hand, allowing him to tinker with the returning parts (and five other signees) on a unit that struggled to protect the passer (2.62 sacks allowed per game, 103rd nationally) and establish a consistent ground game (139.6 yards per game, 95th nationally).
Elsewhere, it is another swing-and-miss for Jim Harbaugh and Michigan, who finished with the 21st-ranked class after an 8-5 campaign and were among the finalists for Anderson. For the Wolverines’ sake, Ole Miss QB transfer Shea Patterson better be ruled immediately eligible by the NCAA, or else you can add quarterback and left tackle to the list of questions plaguing a program in win-now mode — a program that has arguably the nation’s toughest schedule in 2018, too. The good news is that Michigan did bring on Ed Warinner, one of the best O-line coaches in the country.
