Most of us are in agreement that these are the two guys we'd be happy to get as our new head coach. And while I would have been ecstatic to get Kelly a few years ago, it'll feel a bit like a let down to me today. Here's why: Let's compare the two. Who gets the edge in a bunch of head-to-head battles? AGE? Edge goes to Frost. He's more than a decade younger. SOMETHING TO PROVE? Edge goes to Frost. He'd be a lot hungrier to win at the Power 5 level. Kelly already has. LOCAL TIES: Edge goes to Frost. He's been coaching for two years right down the road and has developed a myriad of contacts. Kelly has never even been in the general vicinity of the Southeast. Hell, the closest he's ever been was in Philadelphia, and that was in the NFL. "BRAND": Edge goes to Frost. Look, I love Kelly and what he did at Oregon, but let's face it: That ended five years ago. Sure, fans and media members in their 20s, 30s and 40s have fond recollections of Kelly, but a recruit who is, say, 16 or 17 was 11 or 12 years old the last year of Kelly's collegiate coaching career. That same kid is seeing what Frost is doing at UCF at the present. I don't think Kelly has the name recognition and pull and cache with kids that everyone thinks he does. And I definitely don't think he'd have more of any of that than Frost would. PHYSICAL BUILD: Edge goes to Frost. I know this is low on the list of important traits, but it's something, and I prefer a fit dude who can actually get involved during practices and who can run up and down the sidelines to a pudgier guy. Kelly isn't Charlie "Ate the Chocolate Factory" Weis, but he isn't Frost, either. He doesn't "look" the part of big-time coach/CEO as much as Frost does. RECRUITING: Edge goes to Frost. He's been recruiting in the Sunshine State for two seasons. Kelly hasn't sniffed the SE in ... ever. And if the rumors are correct, Kelly doesn't like to pound the pavement when it comes to recruiting. EXPERIENCE: Edge goes to ... push. Yes, Kelly was at a Power 5 school for longer than Frost has been at a Group of 5 school, but like I said, that was years ago. Frost is in the game. Kelly's layoff and Frost's current exposure have to factor into it. SALARY (from UF's standpoint): Edge goes to Frost. I'd have to assume that UF would have to pay more money to get Kelly than it would to get a guy with only two seasons under his belt at UCF, even factoring in that Kelly has no buyout. Look, five years ago I would have gotten a chubby if we hired Kelly, but being out of the game for five years and having no ties to the area are red flags for me today, especially when there is a great, Kelly-related choice right down the road. Plus, who's to say that Kelly won't bolt for the NFL at the first chance he'd get. I think Frost would stay awhile if he became our coach. Kelly is my 1B choice, but I just think at this point, given what UF has gone through with its last two boring-as-**** coaches, we need young blood willing to put his offensive stamp on the program. A young guy who is hungry and who will get down and dirty with the kids on the practice field and be fiery and bring the energy and excitement so desperately needed in Gainesville right now. That's why I'm Frost-y.
