Alabama: New offensive coordinator Brian Daboll will earn $1.2 million annually, according to The Tuscaloosa News. His contract has not been formally approved yet. Steve Sarkisian was set to earn $1 million as OC, and Lane Kiffin earned $1.4 million last year. In addition, wide receivers coach Mike Locksley will earn $600,000, after $45,000 as an analyst, and tight ends coach / special teams coordinator Joe Pannuzio will earn $378,000.

Texas: Tom Herman says he plans to use the 10th assistant to focus on special teams, recruiting and defense.

Middle Tennessee: Offensive line coach Rick Mallory suffered a heart attack and spiral arterial tear during a workout Monday, according to his wife. He remains in the hospital, but is reportedly doing well. The school has not commented on the situation.

Pat Fitzgerald has a new 10-year contract. Yes, 10 years.

ESPN first reported Fitzgerald agreed to a new deal through 2026. That’s the longest contract in FBS. It’s a private school, so details aren’t available. Fitzgerald made $3.35 million in 2014, the most recently-available info.

Years on a contract don’t always matter, but details such as buyout would be notable, though that’s unlikely to be made public. Fitzgerald has turned down interest for jobs in the past. Believe it or not, he’s still only 42 years old, serving as a head coach since 2006. But he’s obviously a former player, there are few better fits between a coach and school, and you can knock Fitzgerald off your coaching candidate lists moving forward.

Fitzgerald is a Northwestern guy, and I doubt he will leave there.

Good for him. He's a darn good coach.

This is ridiculous!

Alabama: The school has approved several new contracts, per The Tuscaloosa News. Nick Saban has received a three-year extension through 2024 with the same $6.9 million salary, plus a $4 million signing bonus and another $4 million bonus split between 2020, 2021 and 2022. In addition, athletic director Greg Byrne will have a 5-year deal worth $900,000 with $25,000 annual increases; defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt will earn $1.3 million (up from $1 million), new offensive coordinator Brian Daboll will earn $1.2 million; outside linebackers coach Tosh Lupoi will earn $950,000 (up from $550,000); head strength coach Scott Cochran received a 1-year extension to 2020 and raise to $535,000.

Even more ridiculous!

Nick Saban will be the highest-paid coach again — but only for a year.

Saban’s new contract keeps the same base salary of $6.9 million, but a $4 million signing bonus will put him around $11 million next year. That’s more than the $9 million Jim Harbaugh makes, but $4 million of that for Harbaugh involves a life insurance policy.

The school has made the case for years that Saban is worth every penny, noting the football program brought in $103.9 million last year. Since his hire in 2007, Saban has almost always been the highest-paid coach, with a base salary going from $4 million to $4.75 million in 2009, to $5.3 million in 2012 to $6.9 million in 2014. His entire $65 million deal is more than the entire athletic budget of 181 Division I schools, per CBS.

But don’t forget the assistants. Outside linebackers coach Tosh Lupoi will now make $900,000, which is more than 44 public school FBS head coaches last year, and head strength coach Scott Cochran will earn $535,000, which is more than 18 FBS head coaches last year.

Temple: Quincy University (IL) head coach Tom Pajic has accepted the director of player personnel job at Temple. Pajic had led the Quincy program for the last five years, posting a 20-34 record.

Maryland: Wide receivers / associate head coach Chris Beatty has received an $80,000 raise to $400,000 annually, and defensive backs coach Aazaar Abdul-Rahim has received an $80,000 raise to $250,000 annually, according to InsideMDSports. Both also received extensions through 2018.

Wisconsin: Jim Leonhard will earn $600,000 in 2017 as defensive coordinator, according to the Wisconsin State-Journal. That increases to $625,000 in 2018. Leonhard earned $225,000 last year, coaching defensive backs in his first coaching job.

Talk about a step down:

Southeastern University (FL): Former Baylor running backs coach Jeff Lebby and former Baylor offensive line coach Randy Clements have joined the NAIA Southeastern staff in similar roles. Both spent the previous nine years at Baylor.

TCU: Gary Patterson earned just over $5.1 million in 2015, including a $600,000 bonus, according to tax returns obtained by the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. He received a $500,000 raise in 2015, raising his base salary to $3.99 million that year. In addition, athletic director Chris Del Conte earned $1.23 million, up from $1.09 million in 2014. Former co-offensive coordinator Doug Meacham earned $648,000 as the highest-paid assistant in 2015. He left for Kansas this offseason.

Tennessee: Associate director of football operations Jacob Kirkendall has been promoted to the director role. Kirkdendall joined Tennessee last summer and was previously the DFO at Eastern Michigan.

Chris Spielman believes new offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson is a game-changer for Ohio State.

“He can coach offensive football and call plays. If I’m a Big Ten guy and I see they hired Kevin Wilson, seriously? I guarantee, inside those meeting rooms, coaches are thinking that’s going to be a problem on defense,” Spielman said on SiriusXM College Sports Nation. “He’s outstanding. They’re going to be good again.

“The riches of talent, I went to a couple practices… they have good players, and they’re 70-deep. They’re like the Star Wars stormtroopers. They get blown up and the same guy takes his place.”

It’s been a while since we had a good Twitter fight, or a coaching fight involving Jim Harbaugh. Enter Trim Brewster.

After Michigan led all schools with 11 draft picks, Florida State tight ends coach Tim Brewster tweeted, “Most draft picks doesn't correlate to winning....Just ask Michigan! #OrangeBowlChampions!” — a reference to FSU's bowl win over the Wolverines.

Harbaugh responded Wednesday, adding to Brewster’s tweet: “We LOVE having our players picked, and our players love BEING picked.”

Then Brewster tweeted a photo of FSU’s Orange Bowl rings and wrote, “Just another look at our Orange Bowl Championship rings! Beautiful!”

Harbaugh retweeted his first tweet, and that was that — for now, at least.

UCF: Scott Frost has signed a one-year extension through 2021. Frost went 6-7 in his first season after taking over an 0-12 team.Along with his one-year extension through 2021, Scott Frost has received a $300,000 raise to $2 million annually, and the assistant salary pool increased by $50,000.

Lane Kiffin went from a huge support staff at Alabama to a tiny one at FAU, but it’s not so bad.

“I was there three years and still didn’t learn everybody’s name in that building,” Kiffin joked on SportsTalk with Bo Mattingly. “There were so many people. Somebody for everything.

“(Nick Saban) has a very large staff. He’s done that so he’s got all areas covered, and somebody for everything.”

I would trade Butters for Scott Frost in a millisecond.

I'm glad we don't play them next year.

The way things are lining up, if Mac were to get fired after next season, I believe Frost will be ripe for the picking at that time.

Only 4 schools enter 2017 with the same staff for the 3rd straight season

http://coachingsearch.com/article?a...th-the-same-staff-for-the-3rd-straight-season

Every head coach would like staff continuity, but it’s difficult, and staff turnover is as frequent as ever.

Heading into the 2017 season, only four FBS schools will have the same staff of nine assistants for at least the third straight year. Among those four, Northwestern is entering its seventh straight (since 2011). Here are those staffs:

- Northwestern: Pat Fitzgerald (head coach), Mick McCall (OC / QB), Mike Hankwitz (DC), Matt MacPherson (RB), Bob Heffner (superbacks), Dennis Springer (WR), Adam Cushing (OL), Marty Long (DL), Randy Bates (LB), Jerry Brown (DB / assistant HC)

- Florida State: Jimbo Fisher (head coach), Randy Sanders (co-OC / QB), Lawrence Dawsey (co-OC / WR), Charles Kelly (DC / DB), Jay Graham (RB / ST coordinator), Tim Brewster (TE), Rick Trickett (OL / assistant HC), Brad Lawing (DE / OLB), Odell Haggins (DT), Bill Miller (LB)

- Miami (OH): Chuck Martin (head coach), Eric Koehler (co-OC / QB), George Barnett (co-OC / OL / associate HC), Matt Pawlowski (co-DC / LB), John Hauser (co-DC / CB), Israel Woolfork (RB), Bill Brechin (WR), Pat Welsh (TE), Corey Brown (DL), Joe Palcic (safeties)

- Michigan State: Mark Dantonio (head coach), Dave Warner (co-OC / RB), Jim Bollman (co-OC / TE), Harlon Barnett (co-DC / DB), Mike Tressel (co-DC / LB), Brad Salem (QB), Terrence Samuel (WR), Mark Staten (OL), Ron Burton (DT), Mark Snyder (DE / ST coordinator)

In March, Fisher said he didn’t see a reason to make a change at FSU, and his veteran staff isn’t just looking for the next job.

“It lets you know what’s going on, it’s stability, guys get relationships,” Fisher said. “People don’t realize, ‘Change this, change that,’ well that’s all great. Everybody wants change in this world now, but you’re breaking relationships, how a guy’s coached, how a guy’s told what to do, how he knows what the coach wants and all that. It helps when you keep continuity.”

Along with these schools, there are 17 more bringing back the same staff for the second year in a row.

Akron, Appalachian State, BYU, Colorado State, Duke, Iowa State, Miami (FL), New Mexico, Penn State, Old Dominion, San Diego State, Troy, Tulane, Tulsa, UCF, Virginia, Virginia Tech

Last year, only 14 schools returned their entire staff for 2016, down from 23 in 2015. This year, it’s 21, which is just 16 percent of the 130 FBS programs.

Sometimes, assistants leave for promotions at other schools. Sometimes, they’re replaced to improve a position. Sometimes, they retire. There can be a lot of factors, but coaching turnover is more frequent than ever. The odds of a player having the same position coach for all four years are not very high.

But every single FBS staff will change in 2018, with the addition of a 10th full-time assistant set to begin in January 2018.

Auburn has already been affected by the new IAWP rule, prevented from recruiting a local high school.

Auburn cannot sign any players from nearby Opelika High School for two years, because it hired the school’s former head coach Brian Blackmon, as an analyst, according to AL.com. New NCAA rules prevent schools from signing players two years before and after hiring an Individual Associated With a Prospect to a non-full-time job (after Jan. 18 of this year). Malzahn confirmed that affects Auburn.

"There's opportunities for waivers and all that," Malzahn said. "I'm not ready to go there yet, but that's the rule as it stands right now."

Malzahn has hired several high school coaches in his time at Auburn, often citing the opportunity for high school coaches to move into the college game. Now that affects recruiting, unless they’re hired to a full-time job, as Malzahn once was.

The rule limiting high school coaches from working college camps has caused some issues for Dabo Swinney staffing his camps.

Swinney says his camps are about coaching young players, not measuring numbers or having senior days. He’s turned to other colleges and his current players to staff it.

“We’ve been in touch with a lot of lower-level college staff,” Swinney told TigerNet.com. “We have an enormous amount of prospects that comes through our camps. … We’ve always had a lot of college coaches there just to give them a chance to scout a lot of these guys. But it will just be a lot more of that, and we’ll use as many of our current players as possible.

“The problem with that is most of them are in school, so you’ve got class conflicts, and it’s just a lot to manage with the amount of numbers we get for camp.”
