Good read.

This isn’t on the fans, foolishly chided for being “spoiled” by lazy media pushing a tired narrative. And this isn’t on the media, only reacting to the limited portions plopped on our plate. Nope this rests in the hallways of an administration that’s allowed this dive into mediocrity to become more chaotic than it needed to be, it rests in the offices of two sets of coaches who allowed this program to appreciably slip until it began careening wildly, and lastly it rests in the locker room where the players have generally under-performed while poorly policing themselves.

I'm beginning to think the same way:
This has been the forever Florida stamp, with the two decades of unparalleled heights from 1990-2009 – the bookend of the glorious Steve Spurrier years and the muscular if short-circuited Urban Meyer era – actually the historical outlier.

These twitter or instagram linked links never work for me. Can someone just go to the actual website, then post the actual link?

Thanks in advance.

I have great respect for Marty Cohen. He knows the Gators as well or better than anyone. And he certainly nailed it in this column. We do need this mess cleaned up now and it starts with the administration. And one of the first orders of business is to get Jeremy Foley as far away from Florida Football as is humanly possible. BTW, thanks for sharing the article.

My brother actually wrote for them for a few years. I have to admit, it's pretty cool when your bro writes for Gator Bait.

Boom! It doesn't have to be an outlier with the amount of recruits in-state.

When I graduated in 88 and moved to Arkansas for my first TV sportscaster job, I also had Gator Bait mailed to me...what was the publisher's name back then with the 70's porn star mustache???? I forget....

Marty has a very good point about those two decades (interrupted by 3 yrs of Zook, who DID amazingly beat GA 2x & LSU in their 03 NC yr in Baton Rouge) being outliers in FL football history. I graduated 40 yrs ago. In my four yrs (73-76 seasons) we beat Miami all four years, Auburn all four years, F$U all four years, and yet GA only once (freshman year), and lost to KY in both away games (74 and 76). Despite success with what were then 3 out of 4 of our traditional rivals (Tenn was not, they were a "rotating" team back then - you played six SEC games, five permanent - yes - Miss St was one of them, and four "rotating", for us Bama, Tenn, Vandy, and Miss), and still never won an SEC title.

The 80s also showed false promise, punctuated by stinging probation (one serious, a second one, nearly so, but not). To get back to the "glory years" of SOS, it is going to take a coach who has a vision, and is willing to do the heavy lifting (within the rules, of course). That coach is going to have to show that HE is in control - but he is going to have to be a leader that will also earn respect, from the players (for being tough but fair - looking at you, Urban, who allegedly played favorites) and from the fans. And that street goes BOTH ways. The coach needs to be fair (no favorites) but the players need to respect him, and the university they represent. No more embarrassing incidents, whether misdemeanors or potential felonies, no more boasting, no more criticizing.

And speaking of the fans - Marty is right again. The tired bromide of our fans being "spoiled" needs to be put to rest. As long as we are "behaving" and not posting outrageous comments on players' social media, etc., none of this is on US. It is on the how the coaches coach and the players play and act like men who will represent our university in the best light. Marty's article hit the nail on the head.

I was able to read the whole thing (on this BS work computer that blocks about half the internet!).

I'm glad he called out the administration. Jeremy Foley and his arrogant attitude, along w/ his staff, sat back and allowed this to happen.

Foley gets up and says (during this 8 year collapse), "...we're not getting into an arms race" (talking about facilities). And fans still think he walks on water because we won a few NC's in non-revenue sports (go over the swampgas, there's a 400+ post thread of people jerking him off).

Foley went cheap, and that's the bottom line. And you really have to ask why. Why did he do it? There was no reason. We are one of the top revenue schools in the country. Why was Arkansas, LSU, UGA....hell, even FSU...building sweet dorms, weight rooms, football offices, etc and paying large contracts while we were hiring defensive coordinator's and one-hit wonders (butters)....and attempting to copy Saban TWICE? (it failed w/ Muschamp...so why do it again?).

I remember early in the Muschamp era, before the total collapse. I had recently gotten transferred to DC for work, and was expecting to move back in a couple of years. I asked my sister to add a seat to her season ticket block and the UAA told her "no, you have to add 2 or we can't do it". So we didn't add the seat. What kind of arrogance is that?? Now they're BEGGING for season ticket buyers!

When I was a Gator Club President I attended a few leadership conferences in Gainesville and the Gator Club leaders always called the UAA, "The Firm" - because of the arrogance they had towards anyone who wasn't a top, top level donor.

They sat back and watched this ship sink.

This whole mess is on the UAA/Administration. Them being the cheap bastards they are has burried the program. The question that needs to start being asked is "where is all the money going"

Good article. It's about time somebody called out the people who are actually responsible for the program.

Kinda makes you feel, where the leaks from unnamed sources in Athletic Administration are concerned, like the rats are scrambling as some there have been outed, unofficially or otherwise.

The article reviews lots of things you already know and its points specified and implied are:

1. The last 8 years match the history of UF football long run.

2. The Spurrier to Meyer period can be viewed as the outlier.

3. Implicit in this is that UF could act and make the Spurrier to Meyer period the norm and the last 8 years an outlier, but UF must act decisively to avoid the last 8 years establishing the old norm.

4. Of course Cohen misses the demographic issue that Donkey, me and other have pointed out. Much of the mediocre past was when Florida had a population about the size of Mississippi. That is not the case any more and you almost have to affirmatively work to make UF football bad now.

Got me J, i thought it was an article where the mods here talked to reporters about the loose ship ox is running. Allowing half nekkid men photos but deleting some fine feminine pics. Putting in a Guest posting area while putting a deadline on Lifetime membership signing up. Kicking URG to the curb so the inmates run wild in the chatbox.

But it was a good article, and says what we've been saying, (the rest of the Gator Nation usually come around to our point of view on things), and it is critical this next hire gets us back to elite status ASAP.
