Florida’s Kelly Barnhill named USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year
Add another accolade to Kelly Barnhill’s list. The sophomore and Florida softball’s ace pitcher was named the USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year on Tuesday.
Barnhill has been one of the top pitchers in the country all season. The sophomore righty has a 24-3 record this season and leads the nation with a 0.36 ERA and 13.4 strikeouts per 7 innings. She has thrown 16 complete games, 12 complete-game shutouts, one no-hitter and four one-hitters this season. She recorded double-digit strikeouts in 18 appearances — including her last seven starts — and had two separate streaks of more than 45 scoreless innings this season.
Her numbers in SEC play were even more amazing: A minuscule 0.09 ERA (just 1 earned run allowed in 82 innings), a .114 opposing batting average and eight complete-game shutouts in 13 starts.
Barnhill is the second Florida player ever to earn the USA Softball College Player of the Year award. The other was Lauren Haeger in 2015.

The top-seeded Florida Gators open play in the Women’s College World Series on Thursday against No. 9 seed Texas A&M at noon ET in Oklahoma City. The Gators are looking to win their third national championship in a four-year span.
Barnhill is also likely to earn her first All-America honor this season when they are announced later this week. She has already been named the SEC Pitcher of the Year, first-team All-SEC, first-team All-South Region and a first-team academic All-American this season.
