This song always makes me think of my Father.

He died a couple of years before it came out.

The song is about a break-up or something like that (hence "good riddance"), your girl is leaving, but you're hoping she had good times when you were together.

I know that's how it was written, but the haunting melody and the nostalgic refrain hit me different. My Father worked so hard, sacrificed so much for his family, I fervently hoped that he enjoyed his life and his family; I hope the years we had together were the time of his life.
