A Georgia firefighter is being hailed as a hero after dramatic video earlier this month captured him catching a child being thrown from a burning apartment.

The DeKalb County Fire Rescue Department uploaded the video to Facebook Sunday showing Cpt. Scott Stroup catching a child thrown away from the inferno by her father on Jan. 3, Fox 5 Atlanta reported.

The video shows Stroup catching the girl and then carrying her away in a blanket to safety before collapsing to his knees.
The fire at the Avondale Forest Apartments in Decatur displaced about 80 people, according to Fox 5 Atlanta. Rescue crews rescued 12 people, including eight children, according to WFAA-TV.

“We were catching babies like a football, literally,” Capt. Eric Jackson told reporters. “There were adults that were on the balcony that were dropping their babies right into our arms. We had a couple firefighters catching babies, so it was just really incredible.”

Cpt. Jackie Peckrul, another firefighter at the scene, was being praised as well after separately catching a child during the rescue.

"That was the only thing running through my mind... 'Lord, let me catch this baby,'" she told Fox 5 Atlanta.

About a dozen people suffered smoke inhalation injuries in the blaze, CBS News reported

That doesnt look good. That kid is VERY unconscious, completely limp. The odds are against her or him.

Catch or not, that is the kind of thing that gives families, medics and firefighters nightmares the rest of their lives.

Yes it does. My brother in law is a fire fighter and was the first to find a baby that didn’t make it. Took him a long time to shake it and Still has problems with it today.

I've heard some say they never forget the faces of the kids.

I believe it. They could save 99/100 at the burning orphanage, but the one can drive them to dark places. I sure as hell couldn’t do it.

Seeing maimed and/or dead kids is hands down the worst... there is nothing like it and there is nothing that can prepare or condition you for it... even movies and video games don’t touch on that subject

I'm not a firefighter but I once performed CPR on a baby with the hysterical mother hovering over me. As I expected, the baby didn't make it.

The sounds, images, and smells haunt me to this day.

Thanks, but it exponentially lighter than what the mom has to deal with to this day.
