It all started when UF had a failed presidential search when Lombardi stepped down as UF president in 1999. UF's search to replace Lombarid failed twice and UF ended up with Charles Young ex-UCLA president as interim UF president who later was made permanent. During this time lack of support of Steve Spurrier led to him leaving UF for the NFL apparently much to the relief of some at UF.
Young who also has on his resume easing out John Wooden at UCLA was retired from UCLA, was not a long term solution for UF and did not last long. For some reason UF then hired a dentist to be President. This led to UF going with Meyer over Spurrier in 2005, enhancing the power of Foley leading to the searches that gave UF Muschamp and then McElwain.
Then finally Foley "resigned," but again the search was botched. UF publically went after other people and then Foley had to stay past his resignation date as UF settled on the AD from Miss. State. This of course directly led to the current football coaching search which seems to be heading down the same old path.
