    Meet the Robinsons (2007)

Daddy - Daughter (age 11) night, and I let her pick a movie to watch. We agreed on this Disney animated film as it sounded to be above her brother's level (age 9) and of no interest to her mom (age not available). Premise is a young orphan boy is an inventor and at some point decides to make a memory machine to pull from his forgotten memories what his mother looked like. From there, we have a villain who is literally outsmarted by his (robotic) hat, a young boy who time travels back to help our lead, and ultimately a feel good story (you expect less from Disney?). However, along the way, we are subjected to a fast paced sequence of activities, and a kaleidoscope of characters, which combine to leave you wondering WTF is going on for the middle portion of the film. That subsides, as everything gets tied up neatly at the end, along with a few twists (I guessed most, my daughter did not but she did get one that I missed). Ultimately, it is a good family film if your kids are of an age to keep up with time loop implications. It gave confidence that I could share 'Back to the Future' with her without having to explain a lot. No boobs (it's DISNEY!), but a good watch. 6/10.

    Forbidden Kingdom (2008)

So, we've got Jet Li and Jackie Chan together, so we're off to a good start - and it's not some historical documentary wannabe, it's actual kung fu theater, so that's even better. Plot has some teenage American boy obtain the staff for the legendary Monkey King and has to return it to him. Along the way, he crosses paths with a monk (Li, also plays the Monkey King) and another immortal (Chan) and they fight the Jade Emperor and his witch/assassin. It doesn't have the majesty of Crouching Tiger, but it has quality flying wire fight scenes. Addictionally, there is plenty of humor (esp with Li and Chan arguing over who should train the American kid, and by doing so beating the crap out of him). All in all, not a cheese movie, but a quality kung fu for those interested, and it puts two greats (Li and Chan) in solid roles. The American kid holds his role well enough, but is a throw away actor, I don't think we've seen him anywhere else. No boobs, but greatly recommended. 7/10.

"Red Sparrow" is in that trailer... I didn't know they were making a movie from the book, I hope they don't ass it up, but I'm a sucker for crazy ass J-law, especially as a spy. The book was really good from an author who actually did the work.

We watched Nocturnal Animals last night. I liked it, but felt like it could have been a hell of a lot more compelling had they made the entire movie out of the subplot from the novel.

The autopsy of Jane doe - a father and son coroner get a rush request on a body. Played by Brian Cox and Emile Hirsh and do a good job. Freaky stuff starts happening and supernatural things take over.

It’s ok. Drug at places early and I lost a little interest. Would watch again to see if I changed my mind. 6/10

    Two for you

The Hitmans Bodyguard - Samuel L Jackson is a hit man in jail. He can get a pardon from the world court if he testified against a war criminal trying to take over a country. Ryan Reynolds is a discraced CIA agent turned bodyguard who is hired to protect Him and they have a history. Turns into a buddy cop type action movie as they have to try and get to the trial in time while evading assassination attempts. It’s a pretty good action comedy. The lines at times by both deliver. Gary Oldman is the big bad which is always a plus. 6.5/10.

Aftermath - Arnold Schwarzenegger’s try at drama. It’s a story about two people after a plane crash. Arnold’s story is about a man who lost his family in the crash, how he deals with it and his fight for justice. The other part of the story is the air traffic controller deemed responsible and how it affects his life moving forward with all the guilt. It’s ok but drags at parts. Arnold did good considering it was a new role for him. Not much twist to it as you probably figure out where the last 30 minutes go to. 5/10.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi - trying to look at this from a non-star wars fan point of view. My wife knows nothing about them and really liked it. It tries to be something on its own without pulling to much from the previous. It's another hard movie to talk about very much without spoiling things. If you've scene the last one and the trailer you get the jist of what is going on.

This one is balls to the wall action almost the entire time and the story seems to take place in a short amount of time. There is also a lot of humor in this one as well and it is perfectly placed and timed. Not sure how much of being with the opening night crowd helped with the laughs. Certain characters work really well together such as the hatred between Kylo and Hux. There is also no Jar Jar type character which is good, but a few of the more established still only get limited screen time. If I have one complaint is that there is one thing missing that has always been there, but not going to say what.

As far as how it stacks up I would say even the most diehard original trilogy fan would say it might be in their top 3. The order depends on the person, but no one should have it above Empire. If I still feel the same way after a second viewing I would put it at 3 on my list, but no lower than 4. While it doesn't have any revaluations like I'm your father it has quite a few twists and turns. There are also 3 moments I counted that made your jaw drop because you were not expecting it to happen. It also doesn't feel like empire at all to me which is what many were thinking it would be. Curious where the next one goes after the twists, how they will handle Carrie fisher and it a few questions get answered. 8.5/10 for me.

Wind River - Takes place in Wyoming in a town with a large Native American population. Jeremy Renner is a federal fish and wildlife officer who spends his days controlling the wolf population and protecting livestock. One day he finds the body of one of the local girls. FBI (Ashely Olsen) comes in to lead the investigation and hires him as a tracker since he knows the terrain. Not long later the another body shows up and it leads their investigation to federally protected land. Before the climax it shows you hat happened in a flashback and then leaves you with some satisfaction at the end.

Its about 30 minutes to long and the first half drug while the second half really picks up. I was expecting more twists and turns, but it was a story of good detective work leading them straight to where they needed to go. it's good not great. 6.5/10

Last Jedi - 7/10 - Disney-fied Star Wars with a touch of Space Balls. I'm a purist so while I thought it was entertaining...I did not think it is in the top three of Star Wars movies. You can see Disney's touch everywhere. It seems like basically the exact same story arc as the first two trilogies.
