I blame Brad (again - like the 'Manly' drink thread) for this... He recommended watching the mini-series John Adams.
Good timing as this is our 240th anniversary of us telling the Brits to kiss our ass - we're going it alone.

I think it's a great idea - and if you still have kids at home, it might instill in them a sense of appreciation for how and why this country was born.

And if you have time - I think this was one of the best speeches ever given in the cause of our liberty - especially in light of various members of the Virginia Congress and to a larger extent, the Continental Congress, still wanting to achieve some sort of peace with Britain when it was very obvious that the Brits were about to try and open a can of whoop-ass. I love the language he uses all throughout but especially in the last paragraph:

It is in vain, sir, to extenuate the matter. Gentlemen may cry, Peace, Peace...but there is no peace. The war is actually begun! The next gale that sweeps from the north will bring to our ears the clash of resounding arms! Our brethren are already in the field! Why stand we here idle? What is it that gentlemen wish? What would they have? Is life so dear, or peace so sweet, as to be purchased at the price of chains and slavery? Forbid it, Almighty God! I know not what course others may take; but as for me, give me liberty or give me death!
