Duke plays it better than most. Highest rates in the state among comparable utilities and they've been able to get ratepayers to pay billions for a nuclear plant repair botched due to company negligence plus billions more for new nuclear plants ultimately cancelled due to poor company planning.

and their environmental history is horrible too...and getting the rate board to allow passing those eff up costs to consumers as well. Corrupt as ****.

Irma was not necessarily overhyped, but it has been seen that way by people in SWFL. Virtually no storm surge, and the day of Cuba has gone forgotten. Cuba knocked the piss out of a storm that could easily have been a "5" at landfall. Not only that but the storm jogged East giving most of SWFL the West side of the storm. I doubt you'll see the level of evacuation, or anything near it for the next hurricane.

The trip home from St Augustine to Vero Beach was going fine until the transmission went on my car in a Publix parking lot in Sebastian Florida. smh. The good news is no damage to the house just a lot of branches and palms down.

I have a solution to prevent 90% of the power outages in hurricanes and storms.....

Allow the power companies to cut a 50 yard wide swath of rightaway for every power line, 75 feet either side, every tree gets cut down.

But we all know that will never happen......

How about running vulnerable wires underground. That would surely work.

Yes, but at a MUCH higher price tag. Point is, ALL power lines are vulnerable when trees are standing within 15 feet of the lines.

There have been some huge "disputes" over trees in the rightaway, with home owners refusing to allow crew to cut or even trim the trees.

Those people should be shot if they complain about their power being out.

Agree. It's the price of having nice trees. I am willing to pay the price.

I have no idea what the costs are, but it would be interesting to see a true cost analysis between underground electric vs. proper right of way maintenance. That's a pretty wide swath and burying lines is pretty easy.

I always hear how expensive it is. But how expensive is it to repair all this sh#t every few years? Trees are nice and you know I must be a tree hugger but they shouldnt be with landing distance of power lines and poles if your gonna run electric in the air.

Sorry, but I fail to see the correlation (much less any sympathy) in your response to 5 people losing their lives. I thought you would have a more compassionate response to the death of the elderly.

That would require a reasoned response, but consider who you're exchanging posts with.

I saved this screen shot from last Thursday. Never heard of the AEMI model (seems the EURO & GFS got all the attention) but this model was nearly perfect.
