Nice win last night. Not much offense (again) however. Game 2 about to start (3pm Saturday):

Pitching gem lifts Gators to SEC win

The ball fell several feet short of the left field wall, but all that mattered was JJ Schwarz made a solid connection.

Schwarz’s sacrifice fly would bring home the lone run of the night, as the No. 11 Florida baseball team claimed a 1-0 series-opening win over No. 5 LSU on Friday night at McKethan Stadium.

“I thought our approach was better,” UF manager Kevin O’Sullivan said. “And I thought we hit the ball as good as I think you could against Alex Lange.”

In a battle between two of the nation’s top pitchers — Florida’s Alex Faedo and LSU’s Lange — the Gators (15-8, 1-3 SEC) struggled to string together hits early. Meanwhile, the Tigers seemed to have little trouble making contact with Faedo’s pitches.

The Tigers (17-6, 3-1 SEC) scattered four hits off Faedo in as many innings, but both teams continued to leave runners on base.

“Alex pitched good. But he needed to,” O’Sullivan said of his ace. “He needed to match Alex Lange pitch-for-pitch.”

Florida had a chance to take the lead in the fifth inning, but the Gators came up empty despite having the bases loaded with no outs.

After giving up six runs on just four hits in a 14-3 thrashing at the hands of Auburn last weekend, Faedo was back to his usual ways.

The junior right-hander gave up seven hits with no walks while holding LSU, ranked No. 2 in the SEC in team batting average, scoreless.

“Sully challenged me a little bit and he wanted a good outing,” Faedo said. “I can't give up those bad outings anymore to start series off. It was a nice one out there, putting up a lot of zeroes and getting the W."

Gators swept the series today ... sweeping the #4 ranked Tigers. Beat'em 4-1 or 5-1 ??

Went to both games. Starting pitching outstanding both games and we try and get out the broom on Sunday. There was a hint that the bats are starting to come around with more ground balls and line drives, but still a long way to go. Friday nite, bases loaded, no outs, ZERO runs. Sully refuses to safety squeeze at the bottom of the order with guys who can't make contact. Saturday, bases loaded, no outs, ONE run. Again no manufacturing at all. With all that Liput has had some great at bats this weekend as has Nelly, JJ, and Rivera. Bottom 3rd of the order is a huge problem as Larson and Horvath seem locked into LF and CF, but they can't hit at all. Baker looks like he has supplanted Horvath as the LHP specialist out of bullpen. Still do not like Hicks at SS while Guthrie DH's but that does not look like it is going to change. Does anyone know anything about Langworthy? Has not played at all in any SEC games and I did not even seem him at all yesterday or today?

BTW, heard that Langworthy has some kind of wrist injury and might be a few weeks.

As for the sweep I guess being up 5-0 after 6 innings just was not good enough. I often criticize Sully for over managing. especially when it comes to pitching changes, but today Sully under managed so poorly, that I had to leave after watching 3, 2-run homers by LSU in the top of the 8th. The Gators led 6-2 heading to the 8th and Michael Byrne got out of the 7th by retiring a left handed hitter (Byrne is a righty, FYI). To begin the 8th, LSU's first 2 hitters were both lefties (4th and 5th hitters, BTW). Typically Sully would go to a lefty here, say 99.999999999% of the time. But today, Sully decides to stick with Byrne. THe leadoff hitter sharply singles, so i figure Sully is going to make a change. Nope. So the next hitter who weighs about 125 lbs. soaking wet. deposits one over the right field wall that landed near the bandshell at Flavet field. Why in the world would Sully not have gone lefty/lefty matchup there? he always, I repeat always, micromanages this way every single game. Now the outcome may not have been different but the process was awful A 6-2 lead heading to the 8th turned into a 10-6 loss and of course no sweep!

Was encouraged by the bents and squeeze attempt, so Sully must read this board. I'll take 2-3 but yeah, should have easily had all 3.
