Coaching rumors: Texas A&M has interest in hiring FSU’s Jimbo Fisher

https://www.seccountry.com/texas-am/texas-am-football-jimbo-fisher

All signs are pointing toward the end of the Kevin Sumlin era in College Station after six years in charge of the Texas A&M football program.

The big question is who will the Aggies go after to help turn them into SEC contenders. According to one writer, A&M might be going after a coach with a national championship under his belt.

Speaking on The Paul Finebaum Show, Houston Chronicle staff writer Brent Zwerneman said the people in charge at Texas A&M are interested in bringing in Florida State’s Jimbo Fisher.

It would seemingly be a home-run hire for the Aggies despite the down season the Seminoles are having under Fisher. As coach at Florida State since 2010, Fisher has run up a record of 81-22, three ACC titles, and the 2013 BCS National Championship.

Fisher has experience coaching in the SEC. From 1993-98, he served as quarterbacks coach at Auburn. He worked as offensive coordinator at LSU from 2000-06.

Dumbo isn't going anywhere. No matter how much disrespect the fans throw at him, I think he likes his recruiting base there.

A lot of this musical chairs game with coaches going here and going there is not going to result in any significant change in won and loss records in the end.

I thought his contract was literally tens of millions in buyout cash.....Jimbo may have to eat a lot of that if he really wants out.

Buyout if Fisher leaves: If he elects to leave, Fisher’s buyout is now the sum of all monies remaining on the contracts of his assistant coaches not retained by the university.

So, for example, if Fisher leaves, and the university retains none of ten coaches each making $500,000 on one-year deals, Fisher would owe the school $5M within 30 days. Given that many assistants are employed on two- or three-year contracts, it’s likely that this buyout number could be in the $10-15M range.

The practical impact of this is that it makes it safer for the school to give bigger raises to assistants, without the fear that it will be stuck paying them (or buying them out) if Fisher were to leave.

The only outlier is who is doing the hiring. If it was anyone else I wouldn't worry about him leaving. Simply put, there are budgets, then there is A&M's budget. Anyone know what it will cost for them to fire Sumlin?
