Well, Bower resigned unexpectedly, the AD resigned and the basketball coach got a show cause order from the NCAA. Boosters were caught paying basketball players, but i guess they probably we too ethical about their football to do that. You can read between the lines as well as the next dude I suspect. When Fedora took over there sure as hell had the NCAA sniffing around and a cloud over their program. there were some rumors that he thought about backing out of the contract and going back to Middle Tennessee or wherever he came from once he learned that it was worse than he had been told. That stuff surely affects recruiting and even staff hires.

Fedora took recruiting the new heights I think he even landed a five-star receiver and a couple other Blue Chip skill players. the year after Fedora left they went from 12 and 2 to like 2 and 10.

I will say this, he may not be a sure thing, but I'm sure he's a hundred times better than what we have.

Hey man, he had to design all those plays to implement a FB. That's pretty much the same thing.

You're way off base on this one. The basketball coach that got them jammed up didn't start coaching at S. Miss until after Fedora left for UNC in 2012. The NCAA didn't start snooping around until 2014 and the b-ball program just went on probation about a year ago. The replacement b-ball coach was the guy thinking about bailing out. The AD took the AD job at U. San Diego just recently. None of this was related to Fedora. More importantly, Fedora's ability to recruit wasn't impacted at all by sanctions, rumor or innuendo. He walked into a very good, well established program. S. Miss upset several big programs under Bower and they were always a tough out.

The problem is a think that the Mac buyout is a bigger impediment than we know.

Maybe I'm desperate, maybe I'm smoking the same thing rog is, but I say it's worth a shot. And Steve might go for it. Approach him after we lose to Georgia w/o scoring a TD. You know that eats him up. Tell him his beloved Alma Mater needs him. Ask him to give us 3-4 years as HC. The man certainly knows how to run a program. Tell him we will pay whatever it takes for the OC/DC of his choosing. Spurrier in his heyday took cuts in his salary to pay assistants. He doesn't need the money and he might do it for his current salary just to save the Gators. Spurrier can have as much control of the offense as he wants/doesn't want. In the mean time we are paying Mac to go away like we did Chump. Spurrier is in control of the program. Maybe the OC is groomed to take over if he makes the offense good again. Or maybe it gives us a chance to see if some of the current up&comer HCs pan out. There's no contract extensions to worry about when we find (or groom) a new coach. Recruiting wouldn't be hurt. The 2018/2019 classes would stay together. Hell we're desperate. It's worth having the conversation.

Put yourself in Spurrier's shoes. He's a legend. If he came back and failed, he will have tainted his legacy - it's not the same conference as it was in 1990. The guy has a statue of himself and the damn field named after him. That's a lot of pressure to succeed.

It's what happened to Joe Gibbs when he came back to "save" the Redskins after retirement (ironically after Spurrier resigned) and flopped.

Why not just skip 1 and go right to Hiring Bell with the understanding that Spurrier will mentor him the first year???

Well, a little earlier I did mention the impness of Spurrier would like SEC coaches hearing that Bell was HC with Spurrier being "HC-in-waiting". ;) You're onto it there GMD, Bell/Spurrier would work closer than any such tandem ever in CFB. I think it would "grow" UF's Program prowess, without glitches. It would also make our crowds Gator Greats. Be easy to re-convince Caroll & crew into staying and I seriously doubt those commits will hold for this clustersuck set o' coaches.

Bingo, and give Spurrier the power to help him fill out his staff... Quite the set up, and reasonably priced.

Well, it really isnt the same thing. Creyer had a I formation plays in the book for short yardage and also had those plays in which they motioned the WR into the background for a two back look which were essentually the same plays we ran with the fullback....just without the motion before and with heavier dudes at both positions.

... with no down-the-road punishing HC buyout, since we'll still be buyout-paying Mac & Crew.
Otherwise the reality is that we'll have to take another risky pig-in-a-poke coach to discover in 3 years that we again have an HC of 7-5, 8-4 caliber. Instead of doing that, the AD will stick with McElwain.
No HC running a hot winning program is coming to the bellwether of Gaineville, pulling up wife & kids.
When our choice is only bad, surely no Gator is saying Spurrier+ is bad ... worse.??

Just put out the offer that can be better stacked than any other realistic direction. No Chip Kelly, no HC-worthy NFL attractant. We're on the verge of pissing away our great recruiting commits ... that a Spurrier could lead.

For the love of god, just stop with the "spurrier, please come back" stuff. It's not going to happen. The university needs to find the next young guy with fire in his belly, a step on their throat mentality, and an offense that mimics that on the field. Even if Steve did step in for a bit, it would still be nothing more than a bandaid. We've been trying to apply bandaids to the staff and the players for almost a decade now. ENOUGH! Find the right guy and everything else will fall into place.

All GatorNation should hold in abeyance this concept precept: "drop this Spurrier offer". The idea is for well rested Interim HC Spurrier to "revitalize" our dead-killed program." Is anyone claiming SOS's gut doesn't roil when watching, thinking about what takes place on "Spurrier Field"nowadays? Any guaranteeing that "what-if" thoughts have absolutely never passed through his mind. (Please, also note that it's Jerri's Alma Mater too. Now that's surely rare circumstances.)

Put some UF School of Marketing Heads together - preferrably professors who are UF grads familiar by enjoying Steve's 10-year SEC run excitement at UF. Craft an outlandishly SOS-customized HC-Project together. At least pay Spurrier the compliment that UF did not ignore him. {Talk of embarrassment of his failing is vacuous since hif.Taylors results can only be held up against Mac's records vs ranked teams.} Spurrier's 2018 or '19 teams will be far more pleasing than our last 9-10 yrs. Steve's statue will not be torn down. Hell, instantanious retirement possibility can be written in the contract ... such event would be a more magnetic 'in' via its allowing a gracious 'out'... especially if he groomed Kerwin.

I bet Gainesville will be jumpin' with and more frequented by uplifted & uplifting Weurffel, Bell, Mathews, Youngblood, etc. even more by the non-Spurrier coached NFL HOFer Emmitt Smith. Sideline TV shots of beaming Gator Greats will serve as ads to recruits.

My view is that as long as Spurrier is younger than successful NCAA head coaches, there is no reason UF should not seek him out.

I can remember all the talk that Meyer was a much better choice than Spurrier as Meyer would be coaching at UF long after Spurrier retired for good. How did that work out?
