If we resort to playing half court offense vs Virginia it's going to be a long night. Like Sas said they have no inside game, but we don't have a great inside game at this point either. Virginia is one of the top D's in the country and specifically points per possession. They guard the 3 line very well, which doesn't bode well for UF. But, I still think UF wins if we face them.

They're a guard-oriented team with no legit scoring thread inside. That's about as good a matchup as we're going to get.

I see but we are prone to playing bad when teams get us in a half court game. Our guards especially Hill struggle against defense like that many times. I would take Virginia over Iowa State and Notre Dame however as far as 5 seeds go.

How does a team suck that won those 4 games against top notch competition and held # 1 seed NC to 43 points recently? NC is a scoring machine usually. We only beat one top level team while they had 4 wins against top level teams. Just not seeing where this is coming from - I guess because Virginia plays that defensive type of game which is boring.

I hope they do get upset however in that first game.

They are a slightly better version of S. Carolina. They remind me of our football team, all defense & no offense which doesn't scare me at all. They have beaten some good teams but have also lost some pretty bad ones (Pitt twice lol). They're really inconsistent and having watched them a lot this year, I like our matchup.

Maybe "suck" is a strong word and I used that because I HATE their style of play. Regardless, I'm happy they are our potential 2nd round matchup.

Anthony Guy "Tony" Bennett (born June 1, 1969) is the head coach of the Virginia Cavaliers men's basketball team since March 31, 2009. Bennett is regarded as the best defensive coach in the NCAA (according to a 2015 CBS Sports survey[3] of opposing coaches) and his motion offense[4] is praised as one of the most efficient and elite.[5][6][7] He is a two-time winner of the prestigious Henry Iba Award for the nation's top coach as voted by the USBWA, and has also won the Jim Phelan Award and other National Coach of the Year honors from the AP and Naismith.

Bennett is the only ACC coach to win 16 conference games in consecutive seasons, and one of three in ACC history to enjoy back-to-back 30-win seasons overall.[8] His Cavaliers won ACC regular season titles in 2014 and 2015, won the 2014 ACC Tournament, and reached the Elite Eight of the 2016 NCAA Tournament. Bennett shares school records for single-season wins at both Virginia and Washington State, and won six major coaching awards in 2007 to break the Pac-12 record set by legend John Wooden at UCLA in 1972.[9] He was the first coach to defeat all five Hall of Fame coaches active as of the 2014–15 season.

My oldest brother went to UWGB when Tony was playing there. We are already talking smack about the potential matchup.

I think UVa is about as good a 2nd round matchup as UF could hope for.
I think UNC Wilmington upsets them in the 1st round.

I'll be leaving to Atlantis resort on Wednesday for the weekend. The casino should be a fun place to watch the games!

I remember him as a player. We used always root for the smaller schools and he could drain the 3. I think he holds the all-time record STILL for 3 pt %....let me check. Yup. All-time leader in 3 pt FG % at 49.7%.

They slow the game down so it's tough to watch. We do not do well in the half court. I do not think it is a good match up for us at all.

I think you, Fever, and I are the only ones who don't like the matchup. I'd rather have Iowa State. We can shut them down, and they don't play great D.

MN (Mid Tenn State) and Iowa State (Nevada) have tough matchups.
Those seem to be the popular picks. I'd like UNCW's chances at an upset if they weren't against such a stout defensive team. They can score in bunches, but it won't be that easy against UVA.

So what are we thinking on 12-5 upsets?

Maybe Middle Tenn ST over Minnesota?

Iowa State won their conference tourney so I don't like that one at all.
I think UVA beats UNCW.
ND should beat Princeton.

Funny thing about that is last time Iowa St. ran through the Big 12 tourney and won it, they were bounced in the first round as a 3 seed. That high risk, high reward offense they run is a total crapshoot in March.

I got both 12 seed upsets wrong last year though I did get 26/32 in my main bracket. I'm probably not the person to ask lol

Yep which is exactly why ISU can't win the regular season; live and die by the three will get you beat if you're not hitting.

I think they'll beat Nevada but they will struggle against the size of Purdue.

I think Minnesota is in real trouble as a 5 seed, especially since they lost one of their best players to injury in the B1G tourney.

My 5-12s:

East Tennessee State over us
nd over Princeton
Iowa State over Nevada
Middle Tennessee over Minnesota

And while we're at it, I have UNC Wilmington over Virginia, with East Tennessee State beating UNC Wilmington to get to the Sweet 16.

I also have Northwestern beating Vandy. You know, Vandy? That team we haven't beaten once in the last 5 tries...

ETSU is almost a mirror image of UF but with a better offense. They score a lot of their points from defense and 3. TJ Cromer is their best player. If we can limit him that's how we'll win. If he goes off along with Bradford and Merriweather we're in trouble and it will be a first Rd exit. Their coach has turned that team around quickly and came from Wichita St. They don't have height at the inside positions but their tenacious defense and hustle makes up for it.

This game is a lose lose for me.

Scouting report: The Bucs, who have started the same lineup (all upperclassmen) for all but two games, had a season-ending RPI of 53, which rated better than eight Southeastern Conference teams and just one spot behind Georgia, which wound up in the NIT. ... They average nearly 80 points per game (79.9) and are one of the best shooting teams in the nation, ranking 13th in field-goal percentage (.491), third in 3-point percentage (.383) and third in free throws attempted (24.7 pg). ETSU also fouls a lot (21.2 pg), which illustrates its aggressive style on the defensive end. ... Guard T.J. Cromer (6-3, 195, Sr.) averaged 19.1 points while shooting 45.4 percent from the floor and 40.4 from the 3-point line, with a staggering 103 treys on the season (that's 32 more makes from deep than KeVaughn Allen, UF's best 3-point shooter). ... Backcourt mate Desonta Bradford (6-4, 190, Jr.) added 10.6 points and 4.5 rebounds, while hitting 47.4 from the floor and 35.4 from 3. ... The Bucs go 6-9 and 6-8 in the front court, with their most productive big being Tevin Glass (6-8, 220, Sr.), who averaged 8.9 points and 6.2 boards.
