Report: Ohio State fires WR coach Zach Smith after more ugly allegations surface

Report: Ohio State fires WR coach Zach Smith after more ugly allegations surface

Back in 2009, then-Florida assistant Zach Smith was involved in an alleged domestic-violence incident involving his wife, who was pregnant at the time.

On Monday, just before Ohio State’s Tuesday appearance at Big Ten Media Days in Chicago, another allegation surfaced involving the now-Ohio State WR coach.

According to college football insider Brett McMurphy, the new incident reportedly occurred in 2015:

Shortly after the second allegation surfaced on Monday evening, Ohio State coach Urban Meyer fired his longtime assistant:

Smith had been with the Buckeyes since 2012, but after another allegation surfaced, Meyer had no choice but to (reportedly) fire him.

Now, Meyer can expect a few questions about Smith and why he was still on the staff when he speaks to reporters on Tuesday.

Because Meyer wanted to see a youthful version of himself in Smith?

Smith is the grandson of former Ohio State coach Earle Bruce, who gave Meyer his first job.

He apparently tried to get him another job (at another school) the last two off seasons and there were no takers. That kids temper cost him a $340K/year job (and he was the lowest paid assistant, although he'd been there since 2012).

Irony of ironies, the kid's grandfather became head coach when Woody Hayes lost his shyt on an opposing player during the '78 Gator Bowl.

WR, DB, RB coaches have the easiest jobs and are almost always the lowest paid.

Agree, but the point is Meyer wanted him off the staff. No pay raises and actively trying to get one of his coaching tree buddies to take him. Now the dude is unemployed. Maybe we could hire him as an analyst?? :D

Harbaugh could hire him as an assistant to the wide receivers coach. That would be poetic justice.

I think Zack Smith is generally known as a top 20 recruiter.

Meyer should steal Michigan's WR coach. He's a great one!

IMO Smith was a mediocre nobody and I couldn't believe Urban hired him.

Ive done A LOT of domestic battery cases back in the day. Some were horrendous. Ive gotten the maximum sentence on numerous cases. Ive won cases when the victim no longer wanted to prosecute and all I had was curcumstantial evidence. On a few occasions the woman recanted and claimed she fell or whatever. I still won. I was the favorite prosecutor for the DV shelter advocates and the DV coalition.

However, I will tell you that some allegations of abuse are fabricated, specious, or greatly exaggerated, ie he raised his voice at me and I was scared so give me the house, bank accounts and kids ex parte. This is especially so when divorces were pending, and a domestic violence protective order puts the female in a checkmate position. We had a couple of divorce attorneys that made essentially the same allegation, conveniently, with every client.

All this to say of course we dont want a "wife beater" on staff, but not all people who have an allegation of domestic abuse are guilty. This particular allegation was three or more years ago, IIRC, and now a divorce is pending.
