SEC Softball Tournament: Ole Miss shocks No. 1-ranked Florida, 2-0
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Florida softball has played the leading role in the SEC’s historical season, and on Thursday the Gators became part of more history.
Ole Miss, the SEC Softball Tournament’s No. 8 seed, shocked No. 1-ranked Florida by a 2-0 count on Thursday.
The Gators are the first No. 1-seed in the 21-year history of the tourney to lose in the first round of the SEC Softball Tournament, and they have only themselves to blame for it, as they didn’t start their No. 1 pitcher against the Rebels.
Ole Miss didn’t make the same mistake, and junior Kaitlin Lee delivered, throwing a complete game shutout and allowing just two hits.
“Kaitlin Lee is unbelievable,” Ole Miss coach Mike Smith said. “She is a superstar and she loves competing for her teammates.
“Hotty Toddy Baby!”
Dylan Stencil delivered a 2-RBI double off Florida senior starter Delanie Gourley in the top of the first inning to give Ole Miss a quick 2-0 lead.
Elantra Cox opened the game with a single for the Rebels, and Kylan Becker followed by reaching base on an error by third baseman Aleshia Ocasio. Two batters later, Stencil delivered the two-out lightning.
“Nobody expected us to win, why not shock the world,” Cox said. “Let’s prove to the world we can do this.”
Gourley lasted five innings, giving up seven hits and those two pivotal runs before Florida brought on ace Kelly Barnhill, the SEC Pitcher of the Year and the nation’s leader in ERA and strikeouts per 7 innings.
Barnhill didn’t allow any hits the final two innings, but the damage had been done.
Ole Miss hadn’t beaten Florida in more than three years before Thursday’s game.
“You can ask anyone of my teammates,” Lee said. “I seed I’m feeling in today … I had every pitch on today.”
MVP: Ole Miss pitcher Kaitlin Lee, a 5-foot-6 junior college transfer, became the Cinderella of the SEC Softball Tournament with her miraculous performance against the nation’s No. 1-ranked team.
