Well, we almost cracked the top 10 :D

https://www.saturdaydownsouth.com/sec-football/five-top-10-richest-college-football-programs-sec/

Five of the top 10 richest college football programs are from the SEC

It should come as no surprise that college football has become a business. So much so, that several of the SEC’s top football programs raked in considerable amounts of cash during the 2015-16 fiscal year — two of which even churned out nine figures worth of revenue during the cycle.

According to figures provided by the U.S. Department of Education, which were obtained by Penn Live, 10 SEC programs were ranked among the top 21 for revenue during this time. The only real surprise was the fact that Alabama did not come out on top of the league’s rankings.

Here are the revenue figures of the top earners for the SEC during the period:

  • No. 2 Tennessee – $107.1 million
  • No. 3 Alabama – $103.9 million
  • No. 7 Auburn – $92.5 million
  • No. 8 Georgia – $87.6 million
  • No. 10 LSU – $85.7 million
  • No. 11 Florida – $83.8 million
  • No. 13 Texas A&M – $73.7 million
  • No. 16 Arkansas – $68.9 million
  • No. 20 South Carolina – $59.6 million
  • No. 21 Ole Miss – $56.8 million
The school which ranked No. 1 on the list was Texas, with a revenue of $127.5 million. Imagine how much profit that school could make if it had a football program capable of beating Kansas on the gridiron.

The money Alabama funnels to the players and their families is not counted in that figure or they would surely be number 1.

This is somewhat of a silver lining...

"Gross and net revenue are actually both up about $11M and $5M respectively since fiscal 2010-11"

And of course this makes me smile:

Florida State: $55.7 million:
"Notable is that FSU football listed a whopping $42.5M in expenses in 2015-16, a higher total than any program other than Alabama."

I'd like to see an itemized list:

As recently as 4 years ago, we were in the top five.

Gee, I wonder what happened?

The total revenue figures go up and down drastically due to accounting.

For instance, in the 2014 - 2015 fiscal year Texas A&M claimed revenue of $192,608,876 and a profit of $83,295,225. That was a whopping $73 million more in profit than second place Texas. A year later Texas A&M is claiming revenue of $73.7 million. You can't explain a drop off of $118.9 million in revenue by ticket or merchandise sales.

Texas A&M had an ongoing fund raising effort that ended and was put on the books in the 2014 - 2015 fiscal year. This drastically skewed the numbers and made it appear as though Texas A&M had suddenly become an economic powerhouse.

As a side note, I doubt that the numbers cited by the original source Penn Live are accurate. All of the numbers are low. I don't think they are counting all revenue. Something has to be left out. Here's the top 10 from 2014 -2015.

Texas A&M Revenue - $192,608,876 Expenses - $109,313,651 Profit - $83,295,225
Texas Big Revenue - $183,521,028 Expenses - $173,248,133 Profit -$10,272,895
Ohio State Revenue - $167,166,065 Expenses - $154,033,208 Profit -$13,132,857
Michigan Revenue - $152,477,026 Expenses - $151,144,964 Profit -$1,332,062
Alabama Revenue - $148,911,674 Expenses - $132,354,913 Profit -$16,556,761
Florida Revenue - $147,105,242 Expenses - $125,384,443 Profit -$21,720,799
LSU Revenue - $138,642,237 Expenses - $121,947,775 Profit -$16,694,462
Oklahoma Revenue - $134,269,349 Expenses - $123,017,251 Profit -$11,252,098
Tennessee Revenue - $126,584,033 Expenses - $113,413,325 Profit -$13,170,708
Penn State Revenue - $125,720,619 Expenses - $122,271,407 Profit -$3,449,212

Since these are all non profits, the idea of profit is not appropriate. Surplus to be used in the future is the correct idea. I bet they as in all government make little to no differential between expense type items and capital type items.

Not to mention the costs involved can be different depending on where you are located.

Falling fast. Great job Horseteeth Fooley!!!!

That "fvkk the alumni and the football program, we're building a gymnastics program here" plan is going well.

I think we were over 100 million a few years ago even BEFORE the ESPN money but before Horseteeth instituted the hire a third tier coach then double down on it plan.

Informative, but I'd point out that both Texas and Texas A&M are "economic powerhouses". Take a look at their endowments. They're the only public schools in the top 10.

I agree entirely. Only Harvard has a larger endowment than Texas and A&M isn't far behind. However, we were discussing athletic department revenue not endowments. While it is not unusual for A&M to be near the top of the list, it is an anomaly for them to be $70 million in profit ahead of everyone else.

Agreed on the AD revenue....but the reason they were able to garner that sort of revenue is because they ARE an "economic powerhouse". A&M should have the best of everything in the SEC, simply because of their economic powerhouse status.

They raised an amazing amount of money during that fund raising campaign. I guess there's still a lot of oil money floating around Texas. The difference between Texas and A&M is glaring though. It's no wonder A&M seems to have little brother syndrome every now and then. However, the move to the SEC has definitely helped A&M start the process of narrowing the gap.

Colleges Ranked by Endowment (In Billions)
1 Harvard University $35.883
2 University of Texas System $25.426
3 Yale University $23.9
4 Stanford University $21.446
5 Princeton University $20.996
6 Massachusetts Institute of Technology $12.425
7 Texas A&M University System $11.104

Just for the record, Florida has $1.86 billion.
