Emails show LSU AD called SEC a ‘joke’, accused Florida of being scared

LSU AD Joe Alleva’s next conversation with SEC commissioner Greg Sankey might be a little uncomfortable.

Emails produced as part of a records request made by ABC affiliate WBRZ of Baton Rougeshow that Alleva called the conference’s handling of the Florida game, which was postponed from its originally schedule date of Oct. 8 due to Hurricane Matthew, a “joke.”

A screencap of one email shows Alleva writing “This is a joke.” Blake Chatelain, a member of LSU’s Board of Supervisors, replies to Alleva stating, “Florida would want to play as much as us… Would they not?” Alleva, in his reply to Chatelain, then accuses the Gators of putting off the game in fear of losing and potentially missing out on a spot in the conference championship game:

“No way if they lost they would lose the east. Their schedule easier than Tennessee if they wanted to be play we would be playing here or there.”

In the end, the schools agreed to makeup the game on Nov. 19 in Baton Rouge. With Florida giving up its 2016 home game, LSU will travel to Gainesville in 2017 and 2018.

More from SECcountry:

ome LSU officials weren’t happy with how the SEC handled trying to reschedule the Tigers’ game with Florida.

In emails released by WBRZ, LSU staff was shown to be frustrated with how the SEC treated the postponed Tigers-Gators game. As mentioned in the report, LSU athletic director Joe Alleva had an email exchange, dated Oct. 6, with someone named Blake Chatelain. (There is a member of the LSU Board of Supervisors named R. Blake Chatelain.) This is where things get interesting:

“… If they lose they would lose the east. Their schedule is easier than Tennessee (sic) if they wanted to play we would be playing here or there,” Alleva wrote after Chatelain questioned why Florida would want to avoid a game with the Tigers.

Chatelain wrote, “Florida would want to play as much as us… Would they not?”

Alleva initiated the conversation with Chatelain by writing, “This is a joke” when he forwarded news of the SEC announcing the Georgia-South Carolina contest had been delayed a day for the storm.

“What a joke,” Michael Bonnette, the communications director for LSU Athletics, chimed in.

WBRZ’s Investigative Unit gained the emails as part of a public records request. As mentioned in the report, LSU provided 77 emails, with most of them featuring “mundane chatter about athletic business.” The report states that few of the emails “expressed any unusual amount of anger or frustration over the game being moved to Baton Rouge much later in the season.”

The LSU-Florida game originally was scheduled for Oct. 8 in Gainesville, but it was postponed because of concerns related to Hurricane Matthew. Eventually, it was rescheduled for Nov. 19 in Baton Rouge.

Florida is 5-1 overall and 3-1 in the SEC, a half game ahead of Kentucky for the SEC East lead. LSU is 5-2 overall and 3-1 in the SEC.

If I'm Mac, I'm putting his up on in the locker room until November the 19th and using it as motivation. After we are done whooping their ass, find their AD and shove it up his ass

I think we made out in this deal schedule wise as I doubt we were going to beat LSU regardless this year and now we get 2 straight home games against them.

Worse yet that moron Alleva was on the NCAA mens basketball selection committee which took less deserving teams than UF including one that made the final four. He sat around and let his former conference and all the other power conferences get their 5th, 6th and 7th teams in while he was unable to get a 4th bid for te SEC.

I hope UF does use this as motivation if they're not already. Alleva is an asshat to begin with. Fired his coach and really who is out there that's the hot commodity. Herman is making everyone take pause. Then he shows his true colors with the UF game. Really hope UF knows and does what it needs to win so we can rub it in this dipshyt's face. Then he's at our place the next two years.

Alleva who also poorly handled the Duke Lacrosse scandal, poorly handled Les Miles situation last year, and now has been shown to poorly handle this. Is this the type of guy who should be leading a P5 athletic department. Dude is going to end up talking his way out of a job. The SEC poorly managed the situation, but Alleva might have just signed his own walking papers.
