I think DM made a big mistake here...should have kept him as RB coach. This guy is a very good coach and an outstanding recruiter. The timing could also impact NSD. If he goes to Penn State that will be one more school making inroads attracting Florida talent that we will have to deal with. Really disappointed losing Seider.

Well that sucks. And the timing of it a few weeks before NSD is added salt in the wound.

Stricklin has called a news conference for 4 p.m. to discuss the uphill challenge in retaining displaced running back coaches.

    Big loss, IMHO.

Also puzzling. WR coach at psu? How is that different than his current situation here? Cleveland? That team is almost as bad as tinerc.

Mullen's TE coach at MSU wasn't retained by the new guy. I really hope he doesn't bring him to Gainesville. He needs a few outsider's/new guys to bring energy and new offensive ideas, imo.

Here's the MSU TE coach's new job (hired OOA Jan 19th, so he hasn't been there long):

Louisiana Lafayette: Former Mississippi State tight ends coach D.J. Looney has been named assistant offensive line coach at Louisiana Lafayette.

Not a big loss to me. He's above average but replaceable.

It'll be the fans' fault for not understanding.

Am I the only person on GC who isn't particularly concerned about Mullen hiring guys he knows?
-If he KNOWS their work ethic and expertise are both excellent it makes sense
-If they are already indoctrinated into Mullen's processes and game philosophy it makes sense
-If he TRUSTS them to do the right thing, recruit hard (as has been evidenced so far) it makes sense
-If there is known success on their part (both individually and as a part of the coaching team) it makes sense

I know some of y'all are concerned about game philosophy stagnation and apparently a need to "cross-pollinate coaching staffs in order to get new ideas" involved, but hey...let's be real. It's CDM's team now. It's his philosophy and methods (much to the chagrin of some of you). Why in the bloody hell would we expect him to bring in a certain name (say, Charlie Weis, Zook, etc) at the risk of the coaching staff not working lock-step in the same direction?

NOT pumping here. I'd have said the same thing about any new HBC (including Butters...his core philosophy was more at fault than his picks for assistants).

Now, if these guys can't handle the hard recruiting requirements of working at UF, get 'em gone. Until then...hire away.

Hate to see him go as well. Had the opportunity to meet and talk with him a few minutes and he impressed me as a good person as well as a coach. But this kind of thing is the nature of the business. CFB assistants are a lot like middle school girlfriends to fans. They can be the most important thing in the world to us and when they leave, it hurts us and we wonder if we'll ever recover or even get one close to being as good. But there's a hundred others looking for a job, or a better one at least. Trick is for the head guy to pick us a good one ;)

Sure, that's one of many ways to look at it.

If you'll notice, I follow coaching hires regularly. And the one thing I've noticed is that coaches like Saban, Meyer, and Swinney (among others) go outside their "tree" for many hires. Meyer didn't hire a single coach who was on his UF staff when he took the OSU job. Saban, if I'm not mistaken, hired only one coach who was w/ him at LSU when he took the Alabama job. Swinney doesn't really have a deep "tree", but he brings in coaches he has no connection with to fill positions (he offered Chris Rumph last year the DL job).

IMO, he brought enough of his MSU staff w/ him. I liked that he kept Seider, as Seider has a diverse background and has worked w/ some good offensive minds (namely Dana Holgersen). If he hires Looney, after not bringing him to UF initially....AND the new MSU coach not retaining him, I'll be surprised. I'd rather he bring in a younger up-and-comer or a veteran coach that can bring some new ideas.

Replacing Seider, a good guy, is an opportunity. Go get an equal or better one.
Loved to see a "Gator-Great" like Cornelius Ingram, provided he's stellar at coaching. He's been HC at his alma mater Hawthorne High for 3 years.??
