My family traveled out West when I was 9 and 10 years old. I remember Carlsbad Caverns and little else, including the Grand Canyon, Painted Desert, etc. Carlsbad was awesome.

Our family went to Carlsbad Caverns, too, when I was 14. (As well as White City, for which there were billboards every 200 feet for miles it seemed.) Spectacular.

While at UF, there was a cave we used to drop into somewhere west of Gainesville, on the way to Newberry, I think. Then a hole near Williston that dropped into an underground spring. I’m claustrophobic so both were a challenge for me.

There was one Nw of Gainesville went to for several years. One way in was a chimney you needed to rope in. The other was a walk in that had a 18 inch section for about 2 feet. Originally just a great room with water on both sides. After particulate dry summer both sides opened up. To the right of the walk in went on for 100s of meters. Lots of fun.

Back in 1979 me & a couple friends took off for a weekend at Ginnie Springs. It wasn't much to see then, certainly not anything resembling what it is now. It was to be a laid-back trip based out of the VW microbus we packed all our gear in. There were 2 of us with cave certification (NASDS) but not enough common sense between all of us to keep out of trouble. The hazards of youth I suppose. I really don't want to relive the experience any more than by saying I very nearly lost a dear friends life, and possibly my own, to an ill-advised entry into Devils Ear.

              I've not been back since.

Thanks, me too! Let just say that there were more minutes spent in that cave than not where I wasn't sure we would.

I got certified my freshman year as a PE credit at UF. Tom Allen of "Allen's Aquatic and Trail" was my instructor. He was the guy who was the lead on "Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom" whenever they did an underwater episode. He would lead the diving expedition while Marlon Perkins always hovered over head in the helicopter.

We did one short cave dive during our certification but I never really liked it. Gave me the heebee jeebees. One of my fraternity brothers actually died cave diving somewhere in North Florida. Apparently he knew he was hopelessly lost and wrote a good bye message to his family on his slate as his air was running out. Great guy and extremely sad.

Any confined space diving is extremely dangerous stuff.

My fraternity brother Todd Kincaid was a cave diving instructor. Some of the stories made the hair on my neck stand up. Like being hundreds of feet deep in a cave and having to take all your tanks and gear off in order to squirm through a tiny hole. And getting stuck at the waist in said hole. And luckily being able to chip away enough rock with your dive knife to wiggle free before your air ran out. A knife you were lucky to be able to get a hold of because it was on your ankle on the other side of the hole.

Look, Im an adrenaline junky as much as the next redblooded Mericun paratrooper.

But that stuff is insane. That is the kind of dangerous stuff you do on a mission or to save someone else, not just for fun.

Seems like about once a year someone dies in Ginnie Springs outside Gainesville.

Same with Wakulla and associated springs just south of Tally.....you can splain' it to them, but you can't understand it for them.

I always thought those cave divers should tie a cord to a tree and and themselves before diving. You had to be able to get out if you had the air that way.........I have swam in all of those springs before they became private ........we called one Devils Eye..........looked bottomless.

That's exactly what they do coach. The cord is on a big fishing reel. If you go into the dive shop at Ginnie Springs you'll see these cord reels for sale on the wall. My buddy used to have to take several reels with him on longer dives because he went so deep in those caves.

The issue of risk management is fascinating. The key is to understand the difference between risk management and simply taking chances. Recognizing the presence of a single point of failure that can lead to catastrophe, and mitigating that with redundancy, is a challenge that I can respect. Simply doing daredevil stuff to deliberately risk death is something I don't respect.

BTW the entire unnatural act of flying is in essence the pinnacle of risk management.

                                    Agreed.

It is the difference between racing the baja w cages, helmets, fire extinguishers and other safety gear and street racing on a motorcycle doing 140mph while weaving in and out of traffic on the highway.

Our community sprung up when the Gatorsports message board was shut down in the summer of 2014. We pride ourselves on offering Gator-biased, yet critical discussion among people of all different backgrounds. We are working every day to make sure our community is the best Gator message board you will find.

The management works very hard to make sure the community is running the best software, best designs, and all the other bells and whistles. Care to buy us a non-alcoholic Zima? We'd really appreciate it! Just click the "Donate" tab at the top of the page.
