The 10 most interesting stats from Week 8

https://theathletic.com/134639/2017/10/22/college-football-most-interesting-stats/

Week 8 is in the books, and there are some wild numbers coming out of the weekend.

TCU held Kansas to 21 total yards in a 43-0 win, the fewest yards by any FBS team since at least 2000.

That includes minus-25 rushing yards. It’s the fewest total yards ever for a Big 12 team, according to ESPN. Kansas’ road losing streak stretched to 44 games, dating back to Sept. 12, 2009 at UTEP. That ties for the second-longest in college football history. The record is Idaho State’s 48, from 2006-14. KU’s last road win against a Power 5 team was on Oct. 4, 2008 at Iowa State.

Penn State has outscored opponents 90-0 in the first quarter, the only team yet to allow a first-quarter score.

That included 14-0 in Saturday night’s 42-13 win against Michigan. PSU’s first drive went 75 yards in two plays for a touchdown, and the second went 78 yards in four plays for a touchdown. Compare that to last year, when PSU was outscored by opponents in the first quarter 88-68.

Michigan’s defense was allowing 3.68 yards per play entering the game. Penn State’s offense recorded 8.29 per play in the win.

Alabama has won 72 consecutive games against unranked teams, one shy of the FBS record (Florida, 1990-2000).

With Saturday’s 45-7 defeat of Tennessee, the Tide have won 20 consecutive SEC regular seasons games, the second-longest streak in school history, and 20 consecutive games against the SEC East in all contests. Alabama is 11-for-11 on fourth downs this season, and they’ve racked up more than 600 yards three times, including 604 on Saturday. Their average margin of victory in SEC games this season is 40 points.

Tennessee’s stretch without an offensive touchdown will go over a month, and spans more than three games, since Sept. 23 against UMass. The Vols’ lone TD against Alabama was a defensive score. They were shut out by Georgia and kicked three field goals against South Carolina.

SMU wide receiver Trey Quinn caught at least 15 passes for the third consecutive game, the only FBS player to do that since at least 2000.

Quinn had 17 catches for 186 yards in an overtime win at Cincinnati. One of those catches was on 4th-and-26 in the OT period. It led to a field goal, and the defense got a stop for the win. Quinn also had 15 catches against UConn and 17 against Houston.

FAU put up 804 total yards in a 69-31 win against North Texas.

That broke the previous Conference USA record of 791 (Tulsa, 2008). The Owls scored on their first 11 drives. Lane Kiffin's team averaged 14.9 yards per completion, 9.3 per rush and 9.7 per play. All of those are school records. FAU has scored at least 30 points in four consecutive games. After an 0-2 start, and it sits at 4-3, 3-0 in C-USA.

South Florida set an AP Poll-era record (since 1936) with its 24th consecutive game scoring at least 30 points.

The latest was a 34-28 win at Tulane, moving USF to its first 7-0 start. Oregon did 23 games from 2011-12. The Bulls rushed for 378 yards and 7.3 per carry against Tulane, including 141 yards from running back Darius Tice and 138 from quarterback Quinton Flowers, as both averaged more than 10 yards per carry.

Army completed eight passes in a 31-28 win against Temple. It entered the game with eight completions on the season.

The Black Knights failed to complete a pass in three games earlier this year, going 2-1 in those games. Ahmad Bradshaw, Kelvin Hopkins Jr. and Luke Langdon combined to go 8-for-18 on Saturday, for 141 yards. Army entered the game with 125 passing yards. The Black Knights are 6-2 and will go to the Armed Forces Bowl, their sixth-ever bowl and the first time with back-to-back bowls since 1984-85.

Houston has given up seven points in its last two first halves and 80 points in its past two second halves.

Last week, the Cougars led Tulsa 10-7 at halftime and lost 45-17. On Thursday, they led Memphis 17-0 at halftime and lost 42-38. Turnovers were a big problem in both. Against Memphis, Houston had three turnovers in the second half, including on each of its final two drives. The Cougars are tied nationally for the fifth-highest turnover total with 16.

Baylor dropped to 0-7 with a 38-36 loss to West Virginia, and the Bears have been within a touchdown in the fourth quarter of six of those games.

On Saturday, Baylor trailed 38-13 entering the fourth quarter. The Bears scored 23 consecutive points, but a failed two-point conversion with 17 seconds left secured their 13th loss in the last 14 games. The Bears are a very young team and injured at several key positions, but they’ve been in almost every game under Matt Rhule. They’ve yet to finish.

Bama looks like a lock to break that record, and also one of ours that is in danger is average margin of victory of SEC games in a season. Pretty sure we set this record in ‘08 with a 30 plus point margin of victory in SEC games that season and we had a loss factored in that. But Bama looks like they may break that this year, we’ll see.

Here's a few more takaways from week 8:

Missouri’s Drew Lock is on fire these days. He threw six touchdowns and passed for 467 yards in a 68-21 victory over Idaho. The past four weeks he’s thrown 15 touchdowns and just three interceptions, and now the Tigers finally have their second win of the season.

We’ve been waiting for LSU’s Derrius Guice to have a legendary game this season, and it finally happened. All it took was a matchup against the dumpster fire defense of Ole Miss, which allowed Guice to romp for 276 yards and a touchdown as LSU ran away with the game, 40-24. LSU has now won its last three games and is ready to test its mettle against Alabama in Week 10 after a bye next week.

Predictably, Auburn cut through Arkansas like a hot knife through butter, winning 52-20. The Tigers have looked like a top-tier team this year. Their two losses (to Clemson and LSU) were by a combined 12 points. It’s not shaping up to be a championship-contending season for Gus Malzahn and Co., but this team will be dangerous come bowl season.

UCF running back Adrian Killins was unstoppable

One of the games we had circled on our calendars was UCF hitting the road to face Navy. Both teams have been impressive this year in different ways. Navy came into Saturday’s game with the top-ranked rushing offense in the nation, averaging nearly 400 yards per game on the ground. UCF entered the week with the nation’s highest-scoring offense, averaging over 50 points per game.

We’ll give both defenses a pat on the back for their efforts. Navy only gained 248 yards on the ground and scored just 21 points. The Midshipmen held the Knights to just 14 points in the first half and tied the game up early in the third quarter, 14-14.

That’s when diminutive speedster Adrian Killins took the game over. On the next play from scrimmage following Navy tying things up, he romped 79 yards for six (watch here). Not even an injury (he crashed into the Navy mascot’s feed bucket) could keep him from adding more yardage to his total, as Killins finished with 141 total yards and two touchdowns.

The Knights remain undefeated now heading into their final five games. Barring a big upset they’ll likely be undefeated heading into the final weekend of the regular season against South Florida.

Can Butch Jones finally go away now?

If this seems a bit mean, sorry, but I’m not sorry. Butch Jones should have been fired a few weeks back after Georgia shut the Volunteers out 41-0 in Knoxville. Then last weekend South Carolina laid waste to the team’s awful offense, winning 15-9 due to the worst playcalling anyone could have imagined in the final moments of the game.

Jones should have been gone, but somehow he’s still hanging around. And once again under his watch, the Vols were routed, this time by Alabama Saturday, 45-7.

The only touchdown Tennessee has generated in four weeks came in the third quarter when Daniel Bituli took an interception 97 yards to the house. Even that was marred by a dumb decision by Rashaan Gaulden, who gave ‘Bama fans the double-bird right after the score, down by 22 points at the time.

All that did was tick off the Crimson Tide, who went on to score 17 more unanswered points to close out the blowout. Jones has an offense that cannot score and a team that is generally undisciplined, and now he’s lost four out of his last five games, the lone win being a four-point affair against UMass, and is 0-4 in the SEC.

Butch Jones: 0-4 in SEC play twice at Tennessee. Derek Dooley: 3 times. From 1933-2009, Vols were 0-4 in SEC play four times.

Miami continues to have late-game magic, stays undefeated

Syracuse did all it could (including this insane run by quarterback Eric Dungey) to knock off another top-10 team after taking down Clemson last weekend. However, as we’ve come to expect from the Hurricanes, a late-game surge by the offense kept them undefeated and in good shape the final month of the season.

In the end, Miami quarterback Malik Rosier threw for 344 yards and two touchdowns, and Travis Homer ripped off a 33-yard touchdown run with 2:48 left to seal the 27-19 win.

Before that score, it was a one-point game following a three-drive surge by Syracuse that produced 13 points. Momentum appeared to be swinging in the Orange’s favor. However, Homer shut the door quickly, and Miami’s defense threw away the key with a nice stand on Syracuse’s next offensive possession to close out the game.

We played that same North Texas team last year, and they are much improved this season...and Kiffin rolled their ass. The score was 19-0 in the middle of the 3rd quarter when Del Rio got injured.....

Missouri's not going to be easy either. Any team that can put up offensive numbers the way they can is capable of beating us. Our O might be able to crack 20 on them....but they are capable of going well over 30 on us, especially if our offense makes mistakes (and we all know they will!)....

I could see us having a bad game at Missouri coming in on a 3 game losing streak possibly.
