That says it all really. Why was Butters losing 41-7 four times a year? Bc we were half the team.
Almost all. Mac truly is a horrible head coach, not only with the X's and O's, but as a CEO. It's clear his mind was everywhere else (selling BBQ sauce, fuc#ing sharks, etc.), except for building and coaching a football team. Even if he had a team chock full of 4* and 5* players, he would still find ways to lose.

Which programs are stepping up and which are slipping (in recruiting)?

Here are how various programs ranked in terms of the Total number of 4* and 5* recruits signed during the 5 years from 2009-2013:

1. Alabama- 89
2. Texas- 81
3. Florida- 76
3. Ohio St.- 76
5. LSU- 74
6. USC- 70
7. Florida St.- 62
8. Georgia- 61
9. Michigan- 60
10. Oklahoma- 58
11. Auburn- 57
11. Notre Dame- 57
13. UCLA- 49
14. Tennessee- 44
15. Oregon- 43
16. Clemson- 42
17. Texas A&M- 41
18. Miami- 39
19. California- 36
20. S. Carolina- 35

Now here are the number of 4* and 5* kids signed by school during the 5 years from 2014-2018 (includes commitments in the current 2018 class not yet signed):

1. Alabama- 96
2. Ohio St.- 87
3. Georgia- 79
4. LSU- 75
5. Auburn- 74
6. USC- 69
6. Florida St.- 69
8. Texas- 62
9. Notre Dame- 61
10. Oklahoma- 59
11. Michigan- 58
12. Tennessee- 54
12. Clemson- 54
14. Penn St.- 50
15. Texas A&M- 49
16. UCLA- 46
16. Miami- 46
18. Florida- 41
19. Stanford- 36
20. Oregon- 35

If you compare the most recent 5-year period (2014-2018) to the previous 5-year period (2009-2013), these are the programs that have stepped up their game the most in terms of recruiting:

1. Georgia +18
1. Penn St.- +18
3. Auburn- +17
4. Clemson- +12
5. Ohio St.- +11
6. Tennessee- +10
7. Washington- +9
7. Kentucky- +9
9. Texas A&M- +8
9. TCU- +8

And here are the programs that have seen the greatest drop-off in incoming talent (Note: its not a good thing to be at the top):

1. Florida: -35
2. California: -27
3. Texas: -19
4. Nebraska: -13
5. Oregon: -8
6. Missouri: -7
7. Oklahoma St.: -6
7. Virginia Tech: -6
9. UCLA: -3

**Note: Alabama led the way with the most 4* and 5* recruits during both time periods. They actually signed 7 more during the most recent 5-year period compared to the previous 5-year period.

If you want to know why Florida is struggling these days, its because they don't have the talent. They're averaging 7 fewer 4* and 5* kids signing PER YEAR. Multiply that over 4 or 5 years and you have a team totally depleted of talent compared to how it used to be.

Was McElwain truly a bad coach or did he just fail to bring in enough talent to be nationally relevant? If Dan Mullen wants to succeed at Florida he's going to have to start signing Top 5 or Top 10 classes annually. Here are where the last several Florida signing classes ranked:

2018: #17 (current ranking)
2017: #11
2016: #12
2015: #21
2014: #9
2013: #3
2012: #3
2011: #11
2010: #1
2009: #7

This is about to be the 4th consecutive Florida signing class outside the Top 10. If you are in the SEC, you can't be competitive without at least Top 10 talent. Mullen was not particularly known for his recruiting abilities in Starkville. However he now has a better program to recruit from. Will be interesting to see if he turns it around.

When the Class of 2020 is all signed, if Mullen hasn't signed a Top 8 class, go ahead and write him off. Florida has got to sign Top 5 talent if it want to compete for SEC/National Titles.

On the other hand, all 5 schools who have stepped up their game the most in recruiting the last 5 years played in NY6 Bowls: Georgia- CFP/NCG... Penn St- Fiesta... Auburn- Peach... Clemson- CFP.... Ohio St.- Cotton

*And here are the # of 4* and 5* kids signed by SEC programs the last 5 years (includes current commitments in 2018 class):

1. Alabama- 96
2. Georgia- 79
3. LSU- 75
4. Auburn- 74
5. Tennessee- 54
6. Texas A&M- 49
7. Florida- 41
8. Ole Miss- 33
8. S. Carolina- 33
10. Arkansas- 23
11. Miss. St.- 21
12. Kentucky- 19
13. Missouri- 9

I didn't count up Vandy's but its probably right around where Mizzou sits.

That gap between #4 and #5 is MASSIVE.
Nice to have this info. Mullen needs to beat the classes of Fsu and UTenn this year at the very least. Fingers crossed...Feb 7.

Law, I agree 100%. I didn't write that post (I noted in the opening it's a cut and paste - a UGA guy actually wrote that up).

Honestly, even if Mullen doesn't land a "top 8 class" (as suggested by the UGA guy) by 2020 I think he's in okay shape. He needs to get this current class higher than 17th and get a 10th or better class next year and the 2020 class and he's fine. Sure, we all want a top 5 class - and I think he can do it - but I'm not writing him off if he doesn't land a top 8 class.

10th or better is Mac-like.

Let's not candy coat it. If he can't manage to get a top 8 class by 2020 then he'll probably never do it and it would be wise to jettison him if he's going 9-4 every year. The bottom line is he is here to win and recruit with the big boys. Win, recruit top 5 or be gone. It's that simple.

(from TOS, also posted in the UGA recruiting thread) - This is unbelievable:

UGA is on pace to sign the 6th best recruiting class of ALL TIME (since 2002)....and possibly getting better. (This comes at a bad time for UF)

On a brighter note, UF, has the #1 overall ranking at this time. Our 2010 class is the #1 overall class!! Woohoo

"After the Early Signing Period, Georgia’s recruiting class has an average player score of 93.20 and a raw class score of 311.88. That raw score is just enough to eke out the No. 6 spot in front of the 2010 Texas class. By average score, the Dawgs are eighth."

Highest-scoring recruiting classes, 2002-2017

I was going to list busts and under-performers from that 3010 class but it’s easier to post a link to it and sigh...

A lot of these guys got rated highly BECAUSE Meyer recruited them.

Dang 247 making their crystal ball picks VIP now. Really starting to hate that place.
Look at their prediction charts. They don’t hold the VIP out of that.

So for example, it looks like Stampini has NPF coming to UF as it ticked up today.

Barnes and Montilis seem to be UNC bound based on changes in the charts.

We need a huge weekend next week. Need 2/3 of NPF Barnes and Gouraige

Agree, we need 2 of 3...but if we get Barnes we're also getting Montilus (and I'm fine w/ that). I just hope we don't whiff!!

Whiffing on that much instate elite talent would be crushing. I really hope that with Martez staying he gets on Barnes and Montilus and tells them your next make Apopka proud.

FYI I personally despise Apopka so that was hard to type.

Yeah, and we are seeing that now with Ugly. Jawja never had so many 5 stars and 4 stars in the past. Hype.

Get back with me in two years about Mushchump part 2 at Ugly.

Mushchump had a two loss season also.
We usually agree on alot of things but we don't on this. Kirby is no Muschamp! Dude has landed three 5* QB's in 3 cycles and is currently about to reel in one of the top 5 classes of all-time. Now that he has won a SEC title and played for a National Championship (in yr 2) he'll continue to kill it on the trail for the foreseeable future! Unfortunately...UGA is one of the programs who will be in the mix every yr unless Nick puts Emmert on them or Kirby goes missing.

This is from OnlyGators:

Ortiz, who will likely join the program as a preferred walk-on, is rated as a five-star prospect and No. 6 player overall at his position per Rubio Long Snapping. The 6-foot-5, 230-pound recruit has spoken with a number of Power Five programs but has made his decision for Florida.
How can a long snapper be rated a five-star player? He's one of the best 20-50 players in the whole country? And yet, he's only the 6th best long snapper of this class.... that, my friends, is a lot of bad-ass long snappers about to take the field. That's at least 6 5-star snappers!
