Which defenses do the best job of keeping drives out of the end zone when the space gets smaller?

Some takeaways:

- Derek Mason’s defenses have allowed TD’s in 44.6 percent of red zone trips, though in nonconsecutive years (2013 at Stanford, 2015-16 at Vanderbilt)

- 13 of these coaches are also among the top defensive scoring play-callers include: Dave Aranda, John Chavis, Phil Snow, Geoff Collins, Pete Kwiatkowski, Phil Parker, Lance Anderson, Charles Kelly, Todd Grantham, Don Brown, Bud Foster, Mike Elko and Jeremy Pruitt.

- Clemson’s Brent Venables was No. 3 in scoring D, but the Tigers have allowed TD’s in 58.6 percent of red zone trips.

- Gary Patterson is the only head coach in this group. Geoff Collins became Temple head coach this offseason.

- 5 of these coaches will be at a new school in 2017. Collins at Temple, Snow at Baylor, Poindexter at Purdue, Grantham at Mississippi State and Elko at Notre Dame.
