Would Sankey thwart Chip Kelly hire?

After reading an article from another Gator publication , one can begin to wonder if Greg Sankey would put the skids on having Kelly being hired by UF or any other SEC school? The new SEC rule of having past college coaches with show cause penalties against them would have to be approved by the SEC office. The allegation of Oregon paying $25,000 to get recruits to come to Oregon and "other baggage" could be considered too much of black eye for an SEC school vetting coaching candidates. With this many SEC schools having problems with having to fire their coaches, would this be a consideration that Sankey doesn't want to risk?

There’s the sticky matter of a new SEC rule that basically states that any coach with significant NCAA issues in their past stop will require a phone call from the university president to the SEC commissioner to make the hire. In other words, there’d be another layer in the hiring process. Hypothetically speaking, this may give a university pause and perhaps prevent serial cheaters from being hired and running another program that has wound up in the crosshairs of an FBI investigation.

The early read on how administrators at Florida and the SEC perceive the recruiting transgressions during Kelly’s tenure at Oregon is positive for the coach. A safe way to view Kelly’s NCAA issues is that not all show causes are created equally, and his issues at Oregon don’t appear to be a significant hindrance to his potential hiring at Florida. If there were a pattern of misbehavior, it would likely be a bigger issue.

How hard is this to understand. Sankey works for the schools who jointly formed the SEC. His answer to Presidents of SEC schools is YES SIR or MADAM. I don't care what window dressing rule the SEC passed. Sankey as NOTHING to do with who UF hires. He is certainly NOT going to take on one of the big dogs of the SEC.

It is probably a federal crime for Sankey to have any such a say on who UF hires in any position. It would be an illegal restraint of trade under the anti-trust laws and any coach not hired could sue and if they won their damages would be trebled. Anyone engaging in such a crime would be subject to fines and prison time.

Does it really matter?

If not for an egregiously wrong call in 2004–for which the SEC later apologized—you’d have a losing record to Muschamp, McElwain AND Zook. In our worst coached stretch in half a century, you managed 1 victory. You simply can’t compete with us, regardless of coach.

Sankey still owes us for the way we handled the LSU fiasco. If we want Chip and Chip wants us, it’s a done deal.
