I think the mofo refs were paid by the flags they threw and the cheatn sh#Ts from fsu still hit late in that game when he got rid of the ball quickly. SOS overcame enough penalties in that game to beat them 3 more times. Griese was anti gator in the booth

I watched this in the cardiac step-down unit after my dad had a bypass, was so glad he finally got to see the Gators win it all

EDIT: He's still kicking now at 84 years old :)

The wife and I made the trip to NOLA for that game. Will never forget it. An even funnier side note was returning home early the next morning. When we made it to gate to catch our flight, not many were there. But Dan Hicken of Jax's TV 12 was there along with his then wife Donna (Semi) obviously he was still in celebration mode and a bit inebriated. He kept giving her shyt...."how bout them Noles". One of the best trips I have ever been to as a Gator. Missed the '06 but was there in Miami for the '08. Great Memories.

Yeah listening to those two clowns in the booth was one of the best parts. They were dying.

SOS understands the flow of the game better than any coach I’ve ever seen - 2, 3, 4 steps ahead of the opposing sideline. Understands when to go for the throat, when to call a fake, when to zig when they’re expecting him to zag.

And as you mentioned, had all that knowledge crammed under his visor - the antithesis of kiffy and his 3’ x 5’ laminated color-by-numbers, play-calling-for-dummies guide. Truly the evil genius and so glad he’s a Gator!

After the 24-21 loss at Dork Campbell, it was unbearable to deal with that loss, and Mickey Andrews shooting his mouth off how he learned so much from Nebraska the season before.
Well, it was short lived by a few Nole fans after the SEC title game with the same amount of sense as Bowden not wanting to face the Gators again. Even Sam Kouvaris(News 4 Jax sports director and Nole homer)even predicted a Gator win over the Noles.
Just listening to the FSU players talk about how it made them sick to their stomach watching all the national championship gator commercials during the off-season was classic.

My favorite line from that game was Keith Jackson saying, “Mickey Andrews, whose defense is beleaguered right now...” Before the ‘97 game my Kiwanis Club did a fundraiser debate between Noles & Gators. There was a TV available so I brought a video where I’d spliced that line repeatedly between big offensive plays (Ike stopping on a dime, Danny’s TD run, TJ’s big TD run etc. I think every score. It was hilarious. (I was paired with former UF student body president Ed Scales. We smoked them.)

The pregame interview of SOS by John Saunders was odd. You could tell Saunders didn’t want to be there and visibly recoiled when Spurrier laid out his case on the Noles’ dirty play.

People probably forget that up until the Nebraska game, it was almost inconceivable that we would ever be in a national championship game, let alone win one. Getting an SEC title was a huge step, we'd NEVER gotten one (other than the one stripped from us), until Spurrier showed up on campus. That made this game nothing short of an amazing experience. I made the trip with my dad and some of my insane friends. I think he was a little surprised to see the miscreants I was running with at the time, but he joined right in on all the fun. When he was at Florida his Freshman year, they had a 13 game losing streak. He used to tell a story about how when they beat NC state, (then ranked 18th in the country) to break the losing streak, they built a huge bonfire on campus of everything they could find. When the fire department showed up to put it out, the students stole the axes from their truck and started cutting up the hoses. My dad went through a lot of miserable seasons. His experience of watching the Gators win a national title must've been as surreal as mine was.

One funny memory I had of the experience was walking to the game down Poydras from the hotel with a whole bunch of fans. There was a traffic cop at every intersection, with a whistle, and there were many intersections. We noticed almost immediately that when we'd get to the intersection, the cop would hold his/her hand up to direct traffic and blow eight short bursts on the whistle to let the cars past. It was exactly like the "Mister Two Bits" whistle burst. So every single intersection we got to we all got down low with our arms out, waited for the whistle and shouted "Two Bits" to start the cheer. Everyone caught on and started doing it the whole way there. The cops were a little confused by it but they all chuckled at the spectacle. What a great game full of great memories.

                    Cherry popped again.

Was @the game in new Orleans as a 15 year old. Parents sat down low and sent me and my 16 year old Seminole brother up top in the superdome. No doubt my best gator moment ever, and I've been to every natty we've won in football basketball and baseball. (And several we lost)

Never rewatched it front to back until now. Seen pieces and highlights. Caught the back end several times on espnclassic. But never the whole thing. You've Deflowered me.

Absolutely. And like i said in another comment, we were getting destroyed by penalties. Offensive pass interference, holding, illegal motion. It didnt matter. We would pass it on 3rd and 4, get a 10 yard penalty, and then hit on a 28 yard bomb the next play. It didnt hinder his ability to get the yards he wanted. He had a ball play for it. Spurriers passes were all about timing so he knew how far out his WRs would be and called the plays accordingly. Its brilliant watching him in his heyday

I Was born a gator, went to 40-50 games by the time i was ten, but i didnt understand the heartbreak and passion til 96. I’ll never forget being in Fort Pierce at my grandfathers condo. My grandfather started it all by listening to gator games on the radio in the 30’s and 40’s. Anyways, i knew it was big, but seeing their hearts break during that FSU game in tally really pushed it over the top for me. You could see how they knew this was our one shot to win it all and we blew it. Obviously the cards fell into place for us after that. But it took up til that game for me to see how a loss could really wreck someone. Being in New Orleans for the rematch was the greatest gator experience of my life. Gator fans were littered everywhere and the stadium was like 60-40 gators. We blistered them from the fourth quarter till hours after the game. Broken tomahawk chants in the fourth i swear 40,000 gator fans did it in unison. I wish i was old enough to talk trash at the time i probably would have gotten into a fight knowing myself now.

In 97 I knew we would beat FSU. I had confidence in SOS to counter what they did in Tally and figured a different officiating crew would throw some flags for late hits.

But the OSU game.....I was nervous. I had heard from the local ESPN guy on the radio here in Hampton roads how we didn't even deserve to get off the bus in the same state as OSU and how Harvin was a thug blah, blah, blah so I stayed bunched up on the sofa full of anxiety and didn't drink a drop. I knew it was over when Everett sacked Smith without his helmet.

The next day I called that fat bastard at the local sports show to give him grief and he hung up on me. I kept my "Honk if you sacked Troy Smith" bumper sticker with the Gator logo on my Grand Cherokee for a year. Lots of people honked.

Haha same about 06. My entire family watched the game in 4 seperate rooms. Couldnt stand to be near each other. My bedroom somehow had a 4 second head stsrt on my parents who were in the bedroom and florida room. So i was constantly going nuts before they saw the ball snap. I was a wreck though early on especially when Ginn took that kickoff back

THE ONLY MFN SOS Bowl game I didnt go to. Went to all of those Sugar Bowls but had a bad feeling about travel on that one. Ex told me about a few times, too. So watched it at home. A great part was the lead in song on music to the game. I had it recorded on VHS and my daughter had it/lost it. After the game I drove my daughter and her friend down Univ ave for the celebration. In my 95 Plymouth Voyager. I also had the young son and he was freaked by all the crazy going on the street. Probably ruined him for gator sports but the girl is gator nuts like me,

The only time in my life I have ever rooted for the Buckeyes was the bowl game the night before we played against the Noles in the Sugar Bowl. We needed them to beat a Arizona State and Jake Plummer to make the game the undisputed National Championship. If I remember right (it's been a couple of decades) the Bucknuts were on their backup quarterback and drove down the field for the win. Only team I remember cheering for that hard that season that wasn't in Orange and Blue was Jim Brown and the Longhorns in the Big 12 championship game on 4th and 1.

That was a magically time to be on campus and in Gainesville.

Yes... BUT.... where you wearing skinny jeans? Because the current version of "you" must know how hard it is to freely move in skinny jeans... You might've been beaten to a pulp...

Edit: After further consideration I've come to the conclusion that, game or no game, you should in fact, recieve said beating, just for wearing skinny jeans... :D

Our community sprung up when the Gatorsports message board was shut down in the summer of 2014. We pride ourselves on offering Gator-biased, yet critical discussion among people of all different backgrounds. We are working every day to make sure our community is the best Gator message board you will find.
