I’ve noticed the same. Trask throws with great anticipation and touch, much like Wuerffel. But Danny definitely had more zip and accuracy on his outs and long throws. Since DW wasn’t exactly possessing elite arm strength, I think this gives a sense of why Kyle was a 2star. He has a 5* winners disposition, a 4* ability to read defense and deliver quickly, 3* accuracy, 1* arm strength. High school recruit rankings are weighted on the last two variables. Kyle overcomes them with the first two.

Kyle wasn't himself last night. He normally has more zip on the ball and more accuracy. He may not have the strongest arm but I don't think last night is the game to judge it. He was off.

He was off, but part of it was they were trying to take away the pass and dare us to run. It wasn't his best game, but Virginia isn't a bad defense. But as the commentators pointed out there were 4 potential picks that bounces off the hands/chests of UVA defenders in the game. He will have to get better, or he will have to get replaced.

It just wasn't his night. I really wanted Mullen to let EJ throw some.

If this plan isn't fast enough to suit you, well, tough sh!t. There's still work to be done in several areas. We all should know that. Perine reminded us that we were 4-7 his sophomore year. Yeah, there's a little bit to be proud of.

*The 4th down option was a ballsy call. Mullen believed in his guys and they didn't let him down. There's a big difference in thinking you can do something and knowing you can. This is part of the team and individual character development that the really good teams understand and embrace.

Great job with this as usual, @cover2 .

Trask looked a little off most of the night but he made the big plays when they mattered. It was frustrating to see Grantham’s defense let another average qb have his best career game, and I hope Big Head Todd finds him another stop, and soon. Same with English and Knox. Safety play was absolutely pitiful last night.

I said it in the box last night, but I was very glad Perine was able to go out the way he did in a big game. Kid will be a commodity at the next level for his hands out of the backfield if nothing else.
His block on the flea flicker was beautiful. Not many guys would have made that play.

No way in hell we win 11 games with a QB have 3* accuracy and 1* arm strength. He ain't Tom Brady but he's better than that.

Pretty sure his lower rating was because he didn't start in highschool. Trask has average arm strength but not below average as you suggested. The only 1* arm strength QB we've had in recent years was noodle arm Del Rio.

Great job on the game summary Cover. No surprise that UVA hung in with us. They were pissed by the media boys telling them that they didn't belong in the OB. Trask did not have a good night and not sure why. But it happens. He looked late in his reads and his throws didn't appear sharp. I thought CDM did a good job of adjustments and creativity when needed. His timing on QB substitutions could be questioned. Would like to see more snaps under center in the red zone especially with EJ. I realize it negates the RPO scheme but we seem to get good results with the single back , and can mix in a play action pass to slow down the rush. But we obviously need a much more aggressive and physical OL so maybe next year. As Cover wrote there is optimism for 2020 and the team played hard . Especially proud of the front 7 who attacked Perkins all night. He had great passing game and surely improved his NFL draft potential.
Bottom line , this ain't gymnastics and we don't need style points. Just W's. On to 2020.

But I did see a team that played hard. That will save you on a night when schematically some things aren't going well and your opponent is believing. This is a good trait to have when you're good, but not great. If you maintain it when you improve, you can be hard to beat. I think that has been a Mullen goal in his idea of progression.

I agree with most of what you have written but especially this. Sports competition is full of the unexpected and the "best" teams don't always beat the lesser teams. Upsets happen. Which is part of what makes watching live events so much fun. It's great to see that Mullen appears to be teaching the Gators the old Herm Edwards mantra "you play to win the game".

Thanks for all your reportage during the season. Happy New Year!

EJ should have gotten more time, I really wonder what we are going to look like next year.
I was thinking the same thing. With Kyle being off , it shows that CDM will not pull a QB to give the team a spark. This reminds me of the Kentucky game where Franks could not get anything going. Had he not gotten hurt, we would have lost that game.

I think the reason Kyle Trasks was a little off, according to what Coach Mullen said in the post game interview, was due to Va.'s defense being focused on taking the passing game away. CDM said most of the other games the opposing defense was set to stop the run first which meant better opportunities in the passing game. It also looked like Trask was trying to aim or was using too much touch on some of his throws.

Great year for our Gators we are going the right direction. I am looking forward to next year, how is this year over already??

My thoughts...

1. Early in the year sticks into our minds. But, Pitts has been an above average blocker in the last third of the season. Last night, he was really good to the point he was sealing off defensive ends.

2. This is a guess. But, when I listen to Mullen talk about Trask, I get the feeling that he has given Trask a lot more responsibility than Franks. Mullen didn't talk much about Franks changing plays at the LOS. He mentions it quite often with Trask.

3. Slaton was flat out dominating at times last night. It may have been his best game as a gator. If his play is carried into next season then watch out. We may finally have some elite d-tackle play.

4. Another great season. Mullen built upon last year. As he said in his press conference, now it is time to go from 11 to 12 wins.
Agree on all points. Especially agree about Pitts. He did a heckuva job blocking last evening, much better than any other game I can remember. He's a prospect.

@Gator By Marriage concerning Trask on the deep balls, I think he's better than last night's performance, but his forte is the intermediate stuff, particularly timing throws. This part of Mullen's scheme suits him pretty well. Thinking back, I believe he had to deal with a lot of safety help on the deep shots (hence the big rushing total).

WWDD What Would Dabo Do?

Dabo would run his Million $$$ QB to the tune of a hundred yards to loosen up the defense.

Good stuff as usual, cover! Great perspective on the game and the season.

To read the game thread, you'd think we were losing by 30. Sure, we should've won by a more comfortable margin, but VA played disciplined football - Bronco is no willie. "But climpson embarrassed VA, waaaahhhhh." News flash - we're not climpson.

Will we eventually get there? Maybe. At this point, I can only hope we see no further delays in the facilities upgrade and maybe DM will see the dead weight on his staff and bring in recruiters willing to earn their paycheck.

In the meantime, this football team is not an embarrassment anymore. We're 11-2 with our only losses to #1 lsu and a top 10 ugaly who has out recruited us for the last decade. DM must continue to build on his efforts thus far. If he's nearing his ceiling, hopefully the AD will recognize it. We shall see.

P.S. With the seniors we're losing, DM better close strong in Feb and develop the underclassmen in a hurry!

Go Gators!!!

Talk about a massive difference in the passing game. In "good" games for Franks, he was lucky to hit 220 yards. Trask had an off night and still threw for 300. Awesome stuff.
