SI: Ranking Tebow as #76 College Player of All Time is a Joke

It's kinda a homer article--but also hard to disagree with anything the author wrote.

Luck (to use one example) was listed ahead of Tebow--with nearly identical W/L records and passing stats...but minus Tebow's rushing stats or TDs and most importantly, lacking Tebow's 2 National Championships.

While I know it's impossible to truly compare players across different generations and time periods...no matter what metric one wants to use: Tebow deserves to be higher on a list of best **college** players of all time. Two Championships, a Heisman, and record-setting stats (many of which are still top 5-10.)

ESPN Ranks Tim Tebow as the No. 76 College Football Player of All-Time

Technically only the starter for one of those National Titles, which would be working against him. But 76 is far too low.

Edit: Peyton Manning is 21, Wuerfell and Tebow should be ahead of him.

I saw this last week and can't give it any credit at all. Not that I am a Tebow apologist, I am not, but he is one of the top 5 or 10 college football players of all time. Now if they had ranked by position, that is a different topic. But as a "football" player, Tebow at 76 would be like putting Johnny Rodgers at 66.

They had like 80% of the top 25 as RBs. That alone makes it hard to believe.

That list is retarded.

Didn’t even Bobby Bowden claim Tebow was the greatest player he’d ever seen? Of all the people to heap praise on a Gator, I’d imagine it’d be pretty hard to find someone less inclined to do so.

Manning is 21? He won 1 SEC title. That's a joke.

Manning choked in the big games. Both Wuerffel and Tebow thrived in the big games and won multiple SEC titles, plus NCs.

You are on the playground and named a captain and get the first pick. Who ya got?

There is not another player I pick ahead of him. Not Hershel or Bo, even though they probably get picked second and third. Neither of them could throw like Tebow and while he doesn't have the breakaway speed of Hershel or Bo, I trust Tebow to get 4 yards as much as either of them.

Those are the top 3 picks. The RBs after those two are a pickem. Reggie Bush was fast, so are plenty of others, but their odds of trucking a DL or a LB are nill. My money is on Tebow, Hershel, and Bo to truck damn near ANYONE.

The visceral bias against Tebow that exists in some people just baffles me. That kid has done nothing but spread excellence and positivity his entire life, and some people just can’t stand him for it.

And the way he was robbed of a 2nd Heisman was damn near criminal. I’ll never forgive all of those Midwest and Western region journalists who conspired to leave Tebow completely off their ballots so that Bradford would win... f*ck every last one of those bastards.

Tommie Frazier who won 2 national title and two defacto Orange Bowl (for national Title) appearances. Is 97th. This list is fcked.

Edit: SOS is 91st, Danny W. not on the list.

Agreed. And I despise those Husker teams for obvious reasons.

Those are the two that jumped out to me as being crazy low, Tebow and Tommie Frazier.

And how the F does Peyton Manning rank ahead of Danny? Stats, no. Championships, no. Clutch performances, no. Both had talented teams around them so that's not it. Oh, and Danny was a saint while Peyton teabagged a team trainer. There is no metric by which Peyton was a greater college football player than Danny, none at all. In 1996, Danny beat Peyton at Tennessee and we went on to win the National Championship. Tennessee lost to an unranked Memphis team 17-21. Anybody ever remember Danny losing to a team like Memphis while only putting up 17 points?

SI can EABOD.

No Danny? Bizarre. Tebow is top ten and arguably top 3 QB(Frazier, Tebow and yeah...Burrow 60 TDs vs 7 top ten teams is nuts).

76th is whack.

Attribution is ESPN staff? Or somebody specific.

All of this is true!

But, how did you know where I was at?

Still: he ran and threw for a TD in the 06 NC, so it's pretty hard to say he was a bystander; and that's in addition to his other contributions that season getting tough yards/1st downs. Leak was the definite starter, but Tebow played his part in that Championship season as everyone knows.

And that point is further buttressed by the fact several QBs and RBs ahead of him didn't even have 1 title, let alone a Heisman.

Really, there's just no metric or justification for him not being in the Top 10. If one's going on stats: he's one of the all-time leaders in total TDs (and unlike some of the guys ahead of him: did his damage in the SEC and not the WAC, Conference USA) and has equal or better numbers to most of the others in front of him. Heck: Tebow has as many rushing yards/TDs as some of the RBs who were ahead of him.

Hard to know where to begin. It’s not just a bad list, it’s a list void of consistency. You have people who apparently earned a lifetime achievement award and others who moved the needle for 15 months if that.

And then you have ...

#3 Bo Jackson. Why would I pick on this guy? He’s Superman. Easy. His numbers were very good, but he sat out important games and, all things considered, he’s 23rd but not #3. You gotta show up, man.

#10 Gale Sayers. I idolized the guy growing up based on what he did as a Bear. College? Are you kidding me? Even Sayers would admit it’s downright weird that he gets higher accolades as a Jayhawk.

#21. Peyton Manning. A stat hound who shrunk in big games, esp involving Florida, does not belong 55 spots in front of a guy who personally willed his team to a natty. It’s insulting.

#26 Deion Sanders. Hahahahahaha.

#38 Eddie George. Nice guy, hard runner. Now get the hell out of here.

And where did I say he didn't play a role... what did I say?

And that point is further buttressed by the fact several QBs and RBs ahead of him didn't even have 1 title, let alone a Heisman.

So we should focus on titles and Heismans… because all players who played have an equal shot at a Heisman? Griffin should have been #1 then, he is the only player with 2.

Going on stats is deceiving... Especially when talking about football over a 150 year time span. The stats argument, how are you going to compare a guys stats from the 00's against a guys stats from the 60s. Hell, just the change from 2009 to 2019. It's not a valid argument due to the changes in the game.

It's a hard list, and this one is grossly fcked up. But it should be about impact on the game. There are players who played great in big games... obviously we remember the guys we watched play. There are guys who are on the list that shouldn't be Peyton Manning... and guys who are left off that had an huge impact on the game (or conference) like Danny W. Of the guys I witnessed play Tebow is in my top 10, probably top five. But I didn't watch some of the older guys, nor do I truly understand their impact of the game because of the era in which I grew up.

I am an old man and not a stats guy, but the fact that I had to click more than once and still did not see Johnny Rodgers name said it all to me.

Tebow broke Herschel’s SEC record for rushing TDs. In Jax. Against the Dwags. In a blowout. I was there. It was glorious.

Yes, he had one extra season as a part-time player, but he’s also a FREAKING QB! How many passing yards and passing TDs does Herschel have?

Imma say it again. TEBOW HAS MORE RUSHING TDs THAN HERSCHEL WALKER.

Alex.
