I know this has become the go to running joke since Mullen's '18 class. But the argument then from some of us was that it would take some time to right the ship, change the perception and get back in with some of the Florida high schools. That's turned out to be very accurate based on several reports from HS coaches and recruits themselves. In addition, that initial class was ranked 17th. The classes since have been ranked 8th, and currently 7th. Not to mention the blue chip ratio posted above which further supports that.

The other argument from some of us then was that we shouldn't just load up on fillers to help rankings. The fact that we not only have room for a large class this year, but also have been able to take guys like Shuler, Grimes, Jefferson, Greenard, Lingard, and possibly more this year, says that was absolutely the right move at that time.

No one then, or now, is saying we can't improve the recruiting front. But I'm not sure why some are acting as if we're not getting any "good guys" right now, or haven't in the last few classes.
I would just make a couple of points. The 2019 class was not a top 10 class, and closer to 20 than 10. Mullen took some gambles and lost and then Murphy’s law kick him in the shorts with Jones and Steele. Although, 2020 is much better.

The other is that we are significantly behind the top classes. Huge drop off between us and the leaders. I don’t care if we are 5th or 6th so long as we are within arm’s length. As a matter of fact, my expectations are for slightly lower classes because of the QBs we want and WR we want etc. So if we are close than I’m good. 20+ points back is not close

I should've included this in my response to law, but I'm not really disagreeing with either of you, and even repeated my stance that we could use some upgrades on the recruiting front. We're not where we need to be. My initial post was to Concrete who jokingly made reference to the idea that we'll get good players next year, which was a debate here two years ago. The point I was making is that we've actually done just that. The roster has been improved dramatically through both recruiting and the portal. That was the basis of my post. The joke doesn't make a lot of sense when we've consistently improved our talent level.

Side note, I don't personally buy into the regrading classes idea. Outside of Black(who we may still get) and one other player who failed to qualify, I think the class was a fairly normal class. I don't even consider the Bahamian kid a gamble because it should've been easy. Looks like we'll get him eventually as well. And as you said, the Murphy's law element is just a bad turn of events. But especially now with the portal, it's way too fluid to try and re-rank things. That's just my opinion though, but is why I still consider '19 a better class than '18.

I do agree with your point that the gap between us and the Top 3-4 is too large.

Its because we are fifth in the SEC and have less five stars than Uga has at any one position. Or Tinerc has at OL for that matter.

Is it better? Of course, we are getting fatter in the middle and not being forced to take FIU crap.

Of course we're still going to be playing FIU crap at inside LB, because our linebacker recruiting has been so good I'm told.

Florida should be fighting Alabama and Georgia for the top players, not fighting Kentucky, Cowbell and Georgia Tech for the quality leftovers. It is as simple as that.

We should at least be back to Muschamp level of recruiting.

This is just patently untrue. If you want Muschamp recruiting back then no one can help you

This is at least a rational take.

don't throw the baby out with the friggin' bath water in the process. We've done that crap before and it didn't work out too well

I'm in agreement with a lot of your post until here. The problem Florida had was not dumping coaches and admins quickly enough, including if all the damn bath water/assistant coaches/assistant admins had to go with them.

The exact opposite occured, i.e. we did NOT do that before and that hesitation really "didn't work out too well." So, I get the angst from those that think this staff needs changes yesterday or it will hold Mullen back from ever reaching the pinnacle. I also understand those that see progress here that seems truly different from prior regimes.

Talent composite wise 2019’s roster was remarkably behind Bama, UGA. Somewhat behind LSU and slightly behind Auburn.
It will be interesting to see how we stack up next fall. At first blush it looks like we are closing the gap.
Obviously, see LSU, you don’t have to be number one to win it all you just need to be in striking distance.
However, as my coffee mug says “Money can’t buy love but it sure improves your bargaining position” so does recruiting.

I can’t recall if it was 6 or more that failed to stick, but we had Hammond, Black, and Henderson that couldn’t qualify, Wilson and visa, and then Jones/Steele. Hard to say a complete damage assessment because I don’t know all the rules. Did we lose counters on Steele and Jones? If so, that is huge, because it was really avoidable. Forget if Wilson was supposed to be an EE, but if he does make it in this class, he lost a lot of time in the program that he could have been developing, and he likely took a step back. Henderson could have been a contributor at WR this year. Black is not assured to make it in now, but he missed out on two seasons of real development and could leave after a year.

Point being that the class really fell right out of the gate. And it ended up being a Butters type class.

Mullen has been able to mask a lot of the faults thru transfers, but that’s not sustainable. He has to start putting recruiting classes together, because trading counters for 1 or 2 years isn’t going to cut it long term. One or two guys every once in a while, but he’s using it to mask his mistakes now. He’s about to close out his third class.

it has to get better now, because we’ll be hampered by 25 counters from here on out.

Your points are well taken, but let me 'splain the context I was speaking in. I'm old as hell, and I remember all too well how Coach Ray Graves was, at least to some extent, pushed aside to bring in Doug Dickey after leading us to a terrific season in '69. Also, don't forget that CRG was the man personally responsible for bringing Steve Spurrier to Florida in the first place - for which a debt of thanks is owed to the memory of that great gentleman that can never be paid in full. In addition to fielding several really good teams, Coach Graves literally ushered in the modern era of UF FB and he was pretty much dumped to make way for Dickey. Those who were around in those days remember the shambles DD left the program in, resulting in the infamous 0-10-1 season in Pell's first year.

I'm also referring to the way in which Foley hung Spurrier out to dry after the infamous FSU bung hole intentionally twisted Ernest Graham's knee and attempted to stomp on Grossman's hand. Many believed at the time that that incident, along with the very vocal pissing and moaning from an element of the fan base, because we weren't winning enough championships anymore, played a significant part in SS leaving when he did. I do agree that the Chump should have been fired much sooner than he was, and McEldoosh should never have been hired at all. I hope this helps to clarify my earlier comments. Thank you for being civil in your response.

Seeing as how all of our recruits closely follow (and are greatly influenced by) what we say here on GCMB, maybe a mod could fix the current thread title so Dexter's name ("Gervon" not "Gervin") is spelled correctly? Hate for him to think we aren't happy he's a Gator!

Good grief you're stupid!
Why do you always make grand proclamations without any context?

So we should be Top 5 in recruiting because you say so? Seriously dude, what's your deal?

Who do you think we should be better than in recruiting? In a perfect world I'd like to be #1 but that's not realistic. We're not in a place to be higher ranked than any of the teams above us. It's just our reality at the moment. But we're still in position to beat any of them. And beating them will get us in their realm in recruiting.

I dont want Muschump TYPE recruiting, but Chump and Company could go head to head w Trailerbammer or anyone else and win half, even with wide receivers, QBs too, not just defense.

As long as we recruit type MOSTLY Kentucky athletes were going to be Kentuckyish.

It'd be great if the OP or a mod (the board still has these, right?) would correct the spelling of Dexter's first name in the new thread title.

And we wonder why we're struggling so much on the recruiting trail. Between posters misspelling recruits' names on the preeminent Gator board, to Law's endless bytching to our Vandy-esque facilities, it is a wonder we get any 3-stars, much less 4s and 5s. IMO, Mullen has done yeoman's work recruiting with these seemingly insurmountable handicaps.

I , I think the class was a fairly normal class. .
there's nothing normal about losing five kids from February to August.

EDIT: six

I know that Slevin declared that that was false, in this very thread, somewhere, coz twitter, but, you know, the facts still exist despite his declaration.
