Baseball opening night at 6:30!!!!

Hopefully this season will be an effective cure for our basketball woes. I honestly know very little about the newbies coming in but I know they are highly touted and a lot will get major playing time and I'm looking forward to see what they can do.

I think all the games are streaming on WatchESPN this weekend. Go gators!!

Bullpen has me worried. The same guys who got plastered last season were shelled by USF in November. I assume Barco will be one of the midweek starters. I am not sure about the other.

Season Opener: Mace and Leftwich's turn

“I’ve learned so much,” Mace said of his sophomore season as a starter. “We can all help the freshmen, but the best way to get better is experience and I think that’s what Jack and I got last year, experience in SEC.”

The biggest change has definitely been getting his body right.

“Just getting stronger in the weight room,” he said. “Our whole offseason we got after it in the weight room as a team. Stronger and just becoming more consistent with every pitch I have.

Mace knows what kind of talent Leftwich is.

“I think Jack is a really goofy kid off the field and loves messing around, but when he gets on the mound he’s a competitor and he’s a bulldog,” Mace said. “His stuff is so electric. Just how he throws and how he attacks hitters is different than most people.”

Unable to go this weekend, but just looked at roster for season as it was finally posted. Is Matt Damon hurt as he did not play and Greenfield caught? Kirby at 3B I assume for his bat, but gotta wonder about his defense? Not that he was any good, but did Hunter MacMullen transfer? Perhaps he saw no way he would pitch this season?

1. Defensively, Kirby did not look impressive early. He seemed to settle down as the game went on. It will be something to watch as the season progresses.

2. Greenfield had to deal with one stolen base attempt. The runner had an awful jump. Greenfield matched the runners screw up with an even worse throw. Outside of that, I don't have the baseball knowledge to assess his play.

3. I assume Hunter transferred. He isn't listed on the roster.

4. I am worried about Mace. He threw some meat pitches that Marshall didn't take advantage of. A good team might have put up a few more runs on him tonight.

UF is in the NCAA and the SEC with different objectives, priorities and purposes than the NFL. This is not new. NCAA and SEC members always have and always will accommodate and fund a full range of college athletics. The concepts and principles of college athletics and how they differ from professional leagues is really not that difficult to understand.
