I posted on the political forum about the 1957 season opening game that was to be played in Pasadena, California against the UCLA bruins. The game had to be cancelled because the Asiatic flu hit the UF campus and most of Coach Bob Woodruff's football team was hit with it. That was a big deal to cancel this big intersectional football game. Tickets had already been printed up and the game was ready to go.
UCLA went on and rescheduled the Air Force Academy to replace the lost game with the Gators. UF was unable to reschedule a substitute opponent and opened their season the next week with the Air Force Academy.
Here is an interesting fact. UF went to Pasadena in 1958 and beat the UCLA Bruins 21 - 14. The coach of UF was Bob Woodruff who played on the same Tennessee team in the late 1930s with the new coach of UCLA Bill Barnes.
The 1957 -58 Asiatic flu killed 7 million worldwide and 70,000 in the US.
