First time I have heard that term used in such a manner. :p

'Average as Grits:' SEC Coaches Say Grant Delpit Was Most Overhyped Player

Once projected as a potential top-five pick, most pundits are predicting a late-Day-1, Day-2 or Day-3 selection for the former four-star recruit. And when AL.com's Matt Zenitz asked four coaches for the "most overhyped" SEC prospects from last season, all four said Delpit.

“I thought he was as average as grits,” a personnel official said. “I thought he was average at best. Week in and week out, you play so many good players. I couldn’t have told you who he was (in 2018). I really didn’t notice him. I couldn’t have told you who he was until all the preseason hype and all that stuff going into this year. And then when we played them and I just thought he was average at best.”

How good would someone have to be to be compared to shrimp & grits?

Really scraping the bottom of the barrel for what qualifies for a thread in the Main Sports Forum.
The analogy made it worthwhile.........grits are something you eat with eggs or fish and now days shrimp. When I taught PE on really cold days a bowl of grits from the cafeteria made it much better........but I have to admit Grant Delpit is an interesting name to associate with grits........off season from no season......... you lose reason...........

Grits are fantastic, without question the best overall southern food, and should never be used in some sort of derogatory comparison. I don't care for this guy.
Grits are fantastic but only certain kinds. No thanks on instant grits.

Most of the hype falls on the media guys that allegedly follow the SEC.
Delpit missed most of the last season with an injury but the SEC media experts named him to the All SEC First Team.

So I guess the media guys were wrong. Shocking

That saying has been around longer than any of us.
That said, I agree wholeheartedly with Sofla. Grits is just good eating.

Since its already been mentioned, where in hog town did shrimp and grits come from? I grew up in Lower Alabama (Pcola) on the Gulf Coast and ate seafood and southern cooking all my life. Then 5 or so years ago someone started touting S&G on the Food Network. Never had 'em. Same for waffles and fried chicken. Now I am not complaining. Go to the Gumbo Shack on Galveston Island and have the S&G with creole gravy. Worth the trip. But still, not traditional southern fare.

It’s traditional in coastal GA and SC. My wife grew up on them and she was from south GA. I used to have them in Central Florida and they were around.

Poor folks ate fish and grits forever. Feed a large family with fish they caught and a tub of grits for virtually nothing.
