Car Crash

My grandson went to the store for me at my request & used my car. I had a 2007 Toyota camry LE that was a cream puff....no dents, etc., perfect shape inside & outside and only had 67,500 miles on it. Never had any problem with it whatsoever. Well, as I am 82 I thought this would last my lifetime, but a couple of days ago grandson rear-ended a big SUV and he received a broken nose, but thankfully the people in the other car, including a baby in a car seat were uninjured. My car was totaled. My insurance (Travelers) will pay for my car and repair to the other vehicle and grandson's PIP will pay for the cat scan and xrays of his nose. Grandson charged with careless driving and fined $166.

Question for any of you involved in the auto insurance industry, how bad will this affect my insurance rate (I have a clean record & listed as safe driver & have accident forgiveness) and also grandson's insurance (State Farm)...he has one speeding ticket in last 3 years with 3 points on the record & had a minor fender-bender about 7 years ago. BTW, he is 30 & single. Also, any words of wisdom regarding this issue? Thanks & I appreciate any advise, etc.

Most importantly... glad everyone is ok.

Secondly... these freaking insurance companies will do everything in their power to screw you on this. Nearly all of them can rot in hell.

Also glad everyone came out mostly unscathed.

Words of wisdom - don't let your grandson use your next car.

If you have good insurance representation, you will be fine. I doubt you will be effected that much.

How much did they give you for your 13 year old Camry?

We are talking what insurance will pay.... half those numbers. I will go with $4000.

I’m going $6,000.

I haven's heard from the adjustor yet, but I think somewhere between $5,500 - $6,200 range. I will let you guys know when I hear from the adjustor. So far, so good. Travelers immediately got in touch and gave me a reservation number for a rental & told me to get in touch if I needed anything else or had questions. Oh well, just another bump in the rocky road of life.

Damn it I am not even close lol

I have Travelers also. So far so good, but I haven't had to make any claims either.

$6000 minus your deductible. Rate increase sooner or later for letting grandson use the vehicle.

I am an insurance agent( Not Travelers). As far as the rate-up goes, the first thing they are going to want to know is if your grandson lives with you. If he doesn’t, you might not see much of a rate up as he is not in your household, especially if the payout is sub 5k.
He very well might see a rate up on his own policy. Rate-ups tend to stick to the operator’s driving record, to keep those with bad records from jumping from company to company.
Each state has different regulations as do different companies, and the outcome may be different than what I think, but I wouldn’t worry on this just yet, especially if no one was injured.

DC, glad there was nothing more serious than a broken nose. I had mine rearranged several times and I'm still pretty. Just remember this story in a few years when your great grandson wants to borrow your next car.

Your lucky no injuries. In Florida, if you let someone use your car, you are co-liable for any damages incurred while they use it.

had that baby been hurt, so would you.

I never lend my car to anyone, insured or not.

Grandson blurted out that he would never drive a car of mine again he felt so bad about this and I concurred with him.. Yes indeed, there is co-liability.
