The greatest football coach of all time would have had a coronary if he were alive to witness the defensive debacle at Kyle Field this afternoon. He’d also probably have some choice words about our secondary play, and our pass rush. But Coach Lombardi is long gone, as are our championship hopes. Left in a pile of unsuccessful tacklers and toasted DBs.

Let’s be honest...most of us knew in our hearts, after weighing the euphoria of an offense capable of going all the way with the reality of a defense that would have trouble playing dead in a cowboy movie, that we’d eventually meet up with a team that would out score us. We were hoping and praying that just maybe the D might come to life. But it was not to be. And worse yet, it came at the hands of Jimbo Fischer, who we’d suffered against too often prior to Saturday.

So what are we to do? We’ve waited a long time for this season to start, withstanding the uncertainty COVID-19 cast upon it. We’re disappointed, and rightfully so. The most logical thing is to react within the spirit of the times. Occupy the athletic offices. Loot and burn the Gator Shops. Paint a mural on a wall at BHG depicting our forlorn defenders with the words “Re-Imagine the Gators” boldly displayed. Defund the football program. Cancel Mullen, Strickland, and especially Grantham. Throw in Fuchs for good measure. Or we can do what Gators have done before...voice our displeasure, certainly it will eventually make a difference, but until then, keep plowing.

Let’s review how we wound up on the bottom in College station:

*38 points is usually enough to win most games you are in unless you give up 543 total yds to the opposition, 205 on the ground with much of it coming after contact and missed tackles. It’s not enough when you allow 12 / 15 third and Grantham’s (plus 1 / 1 4th and Grantham’s). It’s not enough when Kellen Mond throws for 338 and three scores. We better find a way to score 50+ the rest of the way.

*The defensive woes, and there are several, begin with the DL. They are just too small overall (save Slaton), too green, and not strong enough. Slaton draws a double team most every play and the other three D front guys can’t defeat one guy. That = no QB pressure and a body between you and a ball carrier.

*And speaking of pressure, Grantham did try to send it quite a bit today, especially in several third down situations. None very successfully. Almost looked like slow motion most times. Even saw several twists and loops from the DL, all of it eaten up.

*Then there was the coverage. Soft zone and man with a big cushion won’t get it done. The scheme part is on the coaches, but given the level of play, I guess I can understand the excess caution. Marco Wilson, for example, just got absolutely lit up. I hope they’ll get him some type of assault or physical abused counseling, as that one white TAMU receiver stuck the ball in every orifice.

*Though no lives appeared to be lost, there were a lot of egos that got buried by the Aggie RBs. Our guys got run over, through, around, and away from with regularity. None should test positive for COVID since they social distanced as well as they did with the ball carriers. If one guy can’t make the tackle, you better have two or more arriving. This part of the game, at week three, is inexcusable.

*Offensively we weren’t quite as potent as expected, but we scored 38 on the road. Trask was 23 / 32 for 312 and 4 TDs, but our RB by committee might have gone past its shelf life. The three backs combined for 77 yds on 18 carries. Though Davis had a couple of nice catches and runs, his fumble helped provide a turning point. He’s had those issues before. Trust is broken, got to be earned back. Someone in the box described Mullen’s sub patterns with regard to the backs as “middle school,” making sure everyone got equal touches. Enough of that.

*McPherson’s got big balls. Misses a 45 yarder that didn’t count due to penalty, then got backed up another five on another penalty, and finally drilled a 55 yarder that would have been good from 65. He’s a special player.

*Though Pitts recorded his 7th TD of the season, he didn’t seem quite himself. Might’ve tweaked his left foot some. Might be that everybody knows about him. Toney stepped up, however. Good to see him producing and just getting the chances.

They used to say a team could recover easier from an early loss. Harder to do with the playoff, but anything’s possible right now. It becomes academic, however, if the D can’t find some way to get better, now. Down the road, it all comes back to recruiting needed positions with talented players. The spectrum goes from “Some” to “All.” We have to get closer to “All,” should’ve already been there, but that point’s moot. A big piece of this depends on what Mullen and Co. can hammer out the rest of the way. They need to be coaching and resurrecting the D like their jobs depend on it. They very well may.

Next up, LSU. They’re struggling too. We’ve got an opportunity to get well. It’ll be interesting to see how we bounce back. Hell, I’m already smelling corn dogs! Go Gators!

Always appreciate you C2, but you are too kind. The talent level on defense sux ballz and that is right at the foot of the Head Coach and recruiting. But the total lack of knowing an assignment and constantly looking lost is not a function of talented athletic ability but of knowledge which is to be given by the coaches. Our defensive staff sux just as much as the talent level. Cousin Eddie blaming 25K fans is more pathetic than throwing your asst.'s under the bus. Stand up, say I am the head coach, it is my responsibility and I am going to work tirelessly to fix it!!!! But that is not who Cousin Eddie is. That takes work, just like recruiting and we have seen Cousin Eddie's overall performance in that dept. as well.

Nice write-up as always Cover! But you were too kind to the dwag that has driven our once-proud D into the ground so far it's now a smoking hole. Mullen sounded pissed at the presser - but is he pissed enough to cut his buddy loose? Fat Todd should be quarantined... in Athens

We can lay a lot of our D problems at Grantham’s feet, but Mullen’s got a lot of the responsibility where recruiting deficits are concerned. I once thought a good coach could make chicken salad out of chicken schit, but the reality is...schit is still schit. And that’s what our D is now, I’m sad to say.

We’re not as deep or as talented as we’d like to be, specifically in certain areas. But a competent DC makes more of what we have than what we’ve seen. Light, yes. And if we were just giving up chunks on the ground, so be it. But we can’t stop any play regardless of approach. The team outside of Ttask has taken on Mullen’s personality in being ok to just play and win a few.

Cover, if you are acting DC tomorrow, what would you change?

BTW, I think if you watch the tape again on Zach Carter, you will like what you see mostly. I think he would be fine at WDE or even SDE.

We. Can’t. Tackle. Period.

We don’t teach fundamental tackling techniques. It’s beyond embarrassing.

Nice write up, as usual, cover. As others have said here, we have talent in the secondary, but our scheme certainly doesn’t play to their strengths. Our defensive line can’t get a push, can’t stop the run, and can’t even hold open gaps for the blitz to get through. It doesn’t help when you don’t disguise who’s coming and where they’re coming from(I think I saw Stewart blitz from the same spot about three times on the same drive). We’re going to have long afternoons against UGay and Tinerc if we can’t get any qb pressure or stop the run.

That’s sad, too, because Bama isn’t Bama, UGay looks vulnerable at times and Tenn isn’t quite “back”, and that makes the SEC wide open.

Before this weekend, I was really looking forward to watching us play on Saturdays, and especially looking forward to going up and down the field against the Dwags, LSU, and maybe even Bama if we got the chance. Now I’m somewhat dreading it.

Grantham has to go. I doubt we make a move mid season.....hell, I doubt Mullen makes a move at all, but that’s the long and short of it....and Marco needs to be benched. The kid just doesn’t have it, and it’s a real tragedy, because I thought he was going to be special.

One hell of a writeup C2. And great opening video.

@oxrageous is trying to get some GC press credentials. You interested in a parttime correspondent gig?

After thinking about it I really can't figure out what our D coaches do for a living. We haven't set the world on fire with recruiting, but it hasn't been a total failure either. We have Savage in his third year of building physical tough guys that MacTard totally neglected. We should be dominating the LOS on both sides, we own neither but at least the O line is showing improvement in pass pro and even a little run game. The D line looks like high schoolers that simply are no match for whatever team we face. It's amazing how quickly the D line disappears after every snap. Seasoned veterans in the secondary are wandering around everywhere except near a receiver. No plays on the ball, no chance at an INT or even a breakup. Mond hit damn near every pass and our weak D backfield was happy to try to chase receivers 20 yards downfield as if that's their primary job. I'm an old life-long Gator and I've never seen a D this incompetent in every single facet of the game. What have the coaches been doing? Where does Mullen even start to fix this trainwreck that was created by a boob making $1.8M a year. We could get this performance from a high school coach for $60K.

I would love to see what the stats are against Marco. He gave up several big plays and first downs. White Boy Rick had a field day against him (9 catches / 151 yards).

We have come to expect it with a LB against a TE but our CBs haven't looked this bad in years.

Good stuff C2........

Gotta agree, what the hell is going on out there. Let me say first......Mullen, that's a lame azz excuse on the fans. If he thinks that 25-30K was the cause? Ok, no COVID and there's a 110K, score would have been worse. Get a gut check, find your balz, and fix the dang problem. And he certainly knows that TG is a big part of that problem.

Other than Marco's huge wiff on the TD catch, and yes he should have tried to knock it down. I cannot get out of my mind is that shot of Ventrell Miller getting trucked on the long run. Most of what we're seeing is undisciplined and technique football. Can't tackle, missed assignments, and so on. Probably the worst defensive unit I've seen since the '79 season. I'm pretty sure with my weak old arm and a good OL I could probably light up UF's secondary. It seems to be that we lack to field an ideal defense. Mean, nasty, big guys on the line, Great LB's, and good cover corners. So it's also baffling as to what is the issue.....COVID lack of practice and hitting, coaching, talent, or could be all of it.

I didn't see much of Mullen's presser other than the comment on the crowds, and that was enough. Not sure what he said about the D but he has to own it. I can't believe I am saying this but he needs to take a lesson from a fellow SEC coach that got his D torched yesterday. Orgeron got his azz lit up by Mizzou. Instead of bytching about it he owned it and said it's unacceptable and gotta get it fixed. Well Mullen, is in that boat too.

I feel bad for Trask and the Offense, they played well enough to win and especially on the road. Mullen will have to fix this soon or figure out another scheme. The rest of the schedule will depend on it. Even Mizzou is lighting it up. If you have a QB and WR that can catch, you can beat Florida and Grantham. Not jumping off the ledge yet, but I'm getting the safety nets out of the storage. Buckle in folks, it could be a rough rest of the season. What else is new with 2020!

Thanks Cover, always look forward to the Sunday commentary. I don't understand the soft coverage, have we bumped a receiver on the LOS this year? Should Ventrell Miller be taken out on 3rd and long? The opposition seems to find a way to get a speedy receiver past him deep in the middle a lot. Thanks again Cover!

White Boy Rick had a field day against him (9 catches / 151 yards).
So "White Boys" aren't suppose to get the better of black cover corners? Be reminded that the award for the
top receiver in the country award is named after one of the greatest receivers ever to play the game, Fred Biletnikoff.

Fred is a nole and therefore overrated.
