On Childers and Neuheisel this AM they were talking about all the success Mullen is having with Trask at QB and how offensive coaches are all the rage in the NFL. They were suggesting that Mullen would likely be contacted for NFL HC jobs this year similar but more serious than last year when his name was mentioned for the Dallas job.

You have to figure Jimmy Sexton is listening to chatter about Mullen to the NFL and never passes up an opportunity to try to make his client, and more importantly himself more Money. I personally hate the idea of giving a coach more money and a program crippling buyout at the first sign of success, but wonder if Stricklin would have the stones to call Sexton's bluff. I doubt it.

Any coach with less than 4 years on their contract is supposedly at a disadvantage on the recruiting trail. Don’t know if I buy the narrative, but it’s the narrative nonetheless. Due to this, I think the buyout portion is critical to not crippling your program.

Please God no. Let him play out the ENTIRE contract, then decide.

The irony around a possible contract extension for Mullen is so thick, you could practically cut it with a hacksaw.

Do recruits really care about a coaches contract? I can see it being an issue if the coach is teetering on being canned but that's not the situation with Mullen. But I do worry when Trask is gone so is our dynamic offense so would prefer to not be stuck with a huge re-finance balloon payment looming.

We always give them a contract extension, even three weeks before we fire them when we say we knew from the beginning it wasn't going to work.

Why not? It's monopoly money anyway, right?

IMO no extension until he wins something. Just Mcelwaining in Atlanta isn't winning something.

That's fair. Let's see what happens during the SECCG. It certainly wouldn't surprise me if Mullen is begging to sign a new deal before that game.

That’s as wishful as him signing a series of one-year contracts. Mullen has the upper hand here and can make Stricklin’s life somewhat miserable if he wants, though you would think their relationship would prevent that. Stricklin’s a play it safe guy and out of his league when it comes to hiring football coaches, which leads me to believe the talking heads got this one right. He’s gonna get paid.

After all, what better time to strike it than after the quarterback he refused to start over Feleipe Franks rewrites the school and SEC record books, thus making him look like the brilliant offensive mind he is (on occasion)?

The problem is, he stumbled into this goldmine while in search of a running quarterback.

100% this. Even Mullen himself has said that coming to Florida the expectation is to win championships. He has made it clear that the East is not that.

The other side of this thing is Mullen is number six in line of SEC paid coaches. There is a market outside of the championship argument.

Thats not the problem.

The problem is he returns to being Mullen next year, most likely.

That's probably about where he should be, at this point. Saban is obviously #1, Orgeron & Jimbo are overpaid - but they both have a national championship, Smart has an SEC title, and Gus has been there much longer than Mullen has at UF and he's won an SEC title and made it to the NCAA title game....then there's Dan. Once Gus gets canned and/or Mullen wins something he'll move up higher on the list.

NFL? Mullen?

No.

This is the peak of Mullens career, he is not NFL material and hes not looking to go anywhere else ala Meyer and Stricklin knows it.

And he signed a contract that was 6 th in the nation at the time of signing. They showed faith in him he should return the favor

Jimmy Sexton has the only opinion that matters in this and he is a master at maximizing benefits for his clients. ADs are rookies compared to him and have zero options as Sexton moves his chess pieces across the football coaching landscape. Perception has a way of quickly becoming reality with Sexton. Jimbo backing out of LSU and then going to Texas A&M being a prime example of how crazy the bidness can be. Waffle around and your program can turn to Chimp Butter overnight.

BS. He loaded the O with 5 star WRs, playmakers and drastically improved OL play. The notion that he just lucked into Trask is BS so stop perpetuating it. Give credit where credit is due and focus on where he is failing.

I would rather see any $ going towards any contract extension put to building the facility.
