Truth Takes: Quiet Saturday

Two years ago, in October 2018, UF traveled to Vanderbilt for a noon kickoff, I scored free tickets just before kickoff, we got down 21-3 early, and had a fun comeback. Many people can joke about it being Gainesville north as it is usually more UF fans than Vandy fans. However, this year there will be next to no fans. Vandy is allowing players' parents and some graduate students to attend, that's it. For a game like college football where crowd atmosphere is so much a part of the game, this might be the most unique environment we have seen the Gators play in during my lifetime. Heck, I don't think an unusually early snow in two weeks in Knoxville would be more unique (I've never seen the Gators play in snow, but I bet some of you older guys may have seen it when we used to play Kentucky in November or something like that).

Not that the environment really matters. Though Vandy does probably 50% of the time play us close, even if they shouldn't. I looked at the last 15 and began counting the less than 14 point games, but then remembered how we won by 14 in 2017 because Malik Davis scored after getting a necessary first down (much to the unhappiness of Mac since he would rather him go down). Games where the final score didn't indicate how close it was, see also that 2018 game.

I don't believe any of that matters for Saturday, but something has to be said and there is always the "they always play us close" trope. This is a bad Vandy team near the bottom of the SEC in both offense and defense.

Offense
I have a few bold predictions here:
  1. Trask doesn't get his 4 passing TD's in this game. He will be pulled too early and I believe we will see more rushing TD's.
  2. We run for at least 200 yards and at least one is an early long run.
  3. We see more AR than EJ.
Although I think Mullen may try and keep the Trask train rolling, at the same time I could see if we get up 35-14 in the first half shut Trask down whether or not he's put up numbers yet. Why do I think we will break a long touchdown run early when we haven't had one all season? Because just that. I feel like we are due. Our backs have been close a few times and Vandy will probably be the medicine to help get the running game up a notch.

Really, I expect us to continue to play unstoppable despite the 11:00 am local kickoff.

Defense

Statistically, this is the worst offense in the SEC we have played so far. Maybe that's because they haven't played our defense yet, but they have played Ole Miss' defense. Don't worry, Kentucky and Tennessee are worse and guess who our next two games are against.

If our defense does not totally collapse, we should see the more talented secondary early in the second half.

The defensive line should continue to improve as they have only all played together for a combined two games now. You figure Kyree Campbell returned against Mizzou, Carter played only one half, missed half of UGA and then Arky. Still room to grow and improve together. Cox still continues to grow as he is a freshman.

I expect us to give up some points. Our defense is what it is thought our best d-line unit continues to grow.

This should be a fun one, though with the unique atmosphere.

I've been to a UF at Vandy game (the Driskel game where he ran for 150+ yards). Nashville is a lot of fun, I was supposed to go this year w/ a big group of friends who all turned 50 this year (f*ck you China virus!!).

I want to see all the 2's get at least a full quarter - I want the entire #2 OL to play; EJ to throw at least 8 passes; one RB to get 100 yards; Trask to throw at least 2 TDs; a DL of Dexter, Jalen Lee, Humphries, and Princely; Wingo, Pierre, Hopper, and Reese to get snaps; continued play from Tre'vez & Torrence; and, for icing on the cake....a 58 yard FG!

If Trask doesnt get 4 TDs I’ll be disappointed. Hopefully by halftime.

I can't see the 4 TD streak ending in this game. Arkansas has a well coached pass defense with 12 picks, and that didn't slow Trask down a bit. And that was with us utilizing the run game more. I think it'll be more of the same this week. Plus, as always the defense will likely give up a few big plays which will force Mullen to keep Kyle through a series or two in the third quarter.

I was at the same Driskel game. He broke Tebow's record of most rushing yards by a QB in a game. Coincidentally, I was also at the Ole Miss game when Tebow broke the record.

I can see Trask’s streak end only because Vandy has nothing else to do but sell out on stopping the passing game. I can see Vandy rushing three the entire game and just daring us to beat them with running the ball.

but...Mullen is the kind of guy who plays for stats. Trask will have his 4 by halftime.

Might be good practice to throw against a team, albeit not a very good team, that’s totally selling out to stop it.

I've probably told this story on here before, but about 20 years ago a buddy of mine and I did a road trip to see us play Vandy.
Their stadium is small and is more or less a glorified high school stadium, but it's nice enough.
The UF Band didn't even travel for this one.

Right before the start of the game the Vandy band is on the field and playing towards their side of the field.
Once they stop, they all turn around and march over to the visitor's side and much to our surprise, they play the Gator fight song for us.
Despite the dust up with Mason and the whole Cutler era (even though he would fit in nicely in our PF :),
I think of Vandy as a classy school.

And this has to be one of my favorite SEC videos of all time, so that even elevated Vandy another level when they played this for the tinercee fans as they were exiting Nashville after a stinging loss (the kid in the "boot" still cracks me up):

Arky tried that. Didn't work out so well.

I think DM will let them play.
Grantham will be Grantham...GHS could score on a Grantham "D"
I think our RBs and Toney has a field-day
I do think Trask gets his 4 TDs but the 2's and 3's get in REAL EARLY

This will be a Big 12 kinda game 67-33 UF (Just under OX's spread)

Just so our guys have exuberant-fun = jumping for joy on-field & sideline ... for all potential recruits to (even 14 yo & up) associate with the orange & blue. And Trask gets 5+ TD passes, 4 is old hat.

I'll be watching from an iPad...at a MLS playoff match.

I just don't feel it, but would gladly be wrong

Arky did this as Iron Man would say, "Not a great plan"

Could be fun.

Also, the all white look...all I'll say is that mentioning a pitcher's perfect game or saying that England looks like they will win in the middle of a World Cup semi-final has no bearing on the game...none...nope...despite what Dr. Pepper says, there is no jinx. We are just North Texas'ing it.
