People always talked about Spurrier’s ego, but the fact remains he was brutally honest in his own self-assessment as well as that of others. He went through several defensive coordinators before finally settling on Stoops, who had much to do with getting that UF team over the hump.

Mullen would do well to take that lead on self-awareness. I’m afraid he won’t, though. He’s stubborn that way.

I appreciate the in-depth takes by several posters, re the state of the deplorable defense/coaching situation. I will refrain from arguing one way or the other about specific personnel changes or which DC to hire. Others here are more well-versed in those areas and I will be in listen and learn mode in those matters. But there are two glaring issues that loom large for the program and for the fan base. Todd Grantham is not the answer at DC and the dysfunctional excuse for a D he continues to put on the field is a poison pill for what is otherwise a very good FB team. Secondly, DM has shown a level of reluctance in making staffing changes that does not bode well for a satisfactory resolution of our problems, either in recruiting or at the DC position.

TG is inadequate by any measure and refusing to honestly acknowledge that fact is total BS - especially on the part of our head coach. Unfortunately, I agree that DM is unlikely to fire TG unless we get so thoroughly horse-whipped by Bama that he is forced to act. Even then, I expect him to refuse to do his duty and take out the trash. If he does do as many of us expect, next season could well develop into a total goat phukk and there will be no evading the fact that the current regime has shown itself to be incapable of functioning at a championship level and is almost certainly destined to fail. The O will almost certainly regress significantly next season and with the inevitable deterioration of the D the "noise in the system" will rise to a deafening roar.

Nationally...

Tied for 58th in turnover margin
79th in 3rd down conversion pct. defense
Tied for 77th in first downs allowed
Tied with 8 others at 56th for turnovers gained

Grantham sucks balls. If Mullen can't see this, then he'll be unemployed in three years or less as well.

No way in hell we beat Bammer. If LSU runs the ball against us like they did against Arky yesterday and plays keep away with the ball, we'll lose that one too.

So who do we get?

For $2 mil at a Power 5 there has got to be a huge supply.

Spurrier was all about getting the ball back to his offense quickly. He probably likes Grantham D. :)

After the 95 Nebraska beat down, Spurrier got his people to find the best, young D coordinator in the country and he hired him. Thats what a great CEO does.

Also, Spurrier never had a terrible defense. He had some mediocre ones.

Mullen is too much about loyalty. He's had 1 mediocre and 2 terrible defenses.

McElwain made many mistakes during his time here, but his biggest was to hire and retain his loser friends in spite of their terrible performance. This may ultimately be the cause of Mullens downfall. Certainly appears that way so far.

We can only hope Grantham goes NFL or HC...Who else will pay $2mil for that?

And Mullen can't see it or is too loyal.

And Mcelwain is tearing it up at C. MI. They need to know their limitations and be happy. P5 Let alone SEC takes a Special Talent.

If nothing else, this thread has proven that Kevin Steele does, in fact, read this board, and posts pretty regularly about Kevin Steele.

Grantham is teaching, teaching our young "stars" exactly how not to play defense. He's already inculcated them with that = "Oh no? There is nothing pragmatic I can do, so I'll just wing it." What a betrayal of all DBs & CBs who signed to be Gators. Mullen has misplaced loyalties.

Mason or even Pruitt would be too logical of choices to replace Grantham.

Teryl Austin would be a stretch of a wild card type of choice, but he's connected to Urban, not Eddie.

I’m all for replacing Grantham, but we have this Kool-smoking, stripclub bathroom Drakar, tassel loafer wearing toolbag for the rest of 2020 at least. But I try not to get swept up in the negative. So for those of you that are more schematically inclined, what can we do from here to win our remaining two games(third won’t happen), and compete with Ala and beyond. I actually think this offense gives us a chance against anyone, so I’m not ruling anything out, and would like to hear what you guys think we can do.
