I saw Napier is high on the list too.
Welp

@PeteThamel: Can confirm that Billy Napier has told Louisiana officials he's staying at the school. "He's moving forward as the head coach of the Ragin' Cauns," a source told @YahooSports. (@RossDellenger had first).

@BruceFeldmanCFB: BREAKING: #OU assistant Shane Beamer, son of VaTech legend Frank Beamer is expected to become the next head coach at South Carolina, per sources. The 43-year-old Beamer was a former Gamecocks assistant and is very popular with the former players.

This is great news! Beamer being off the board puts us one step closer to Grantham being a legitimate possibility if VT gets rid of Fuente. I'm also not convinced the Oklahoma offense works without a Heisman contender under center, and he won't find many of those at USCe.

The QB room at SC is actually pretty good and they still have a 5-star committed for the 22 class.

This is a solid hire for SC - some of their fans think they're the type of program that should be able to steal Nick Saban or Ryan Day from their current jobs - but this is a realistic hire w/ a high ceiling. I don't expect him to do more than 8-9 wins max, but their offense will probably look a lot more competent than the last 5 years under Muschamp's "leadership".

My perception has always been that SC has that ceiling - with an Outback/Capital One berth at the end of an unusually good year. I’ve attributed that to their being in SC.

Then I remember, “But Clemson...”

So it’s not geographical so much as it is institutional.

Agreed
No matter what some here think of their program, they have tremendous fan support and they have invested millions in their football facilities.

They’re as hungry for success as we were in 1989.
Spurrier gave them a little short lived success and I think Beamer May get them to 3rd in the East status pretty quickly.

Although their classes weren’t rated very high they do indeed have a few 4, and a rare 5 star sprinkled in with a bunch of 2 and 3 star guys.

They will be a tough out for us in a couple years. the whole 1st time head coach thing takes a couple of years to get rolling.

Maybe Beamer is the answer for a “Stoops at Kentucky” like run at South Carolina.

This most certainly not a "solid" hire. This guy got hired because of who his daddy is. I haven't seen someone more undeserving of a job like this possibly ever. You telling me they couldn't have pulled in someone who's atleast been a coordinator?

Well, I disagree. If you follow footballscoop, Beamer has been one of the top non-head coach/assistants that was destined to be a head coach for a couple of years. He worked at SC and knows the program. He worked under Spurrier, his dad, Riley, and Smart. Sure, he's not a sitting Power 5 head coach, but he's been groomed for the job. And sure, his dad helped him get into coaching. We're talking about South Carolina here. They made overtures for Freeze, Neil Brown, Billy Napier, Scott Satterfield, Jamey Chadwell among others. They apparently weren't comfortable w/ Chadwell. If Beamer was their top choice he would have been announced over a week ago. They tried. It's a good hire....for South Carolina.

What's comical is the SC "insider" says Billy Napier wanted the job but the offer never came. Yeah, sure. And Saban was never offered the UF job when Foley decided to hire Butters.

Edit: and apparently Napier wanted $5 million, so that's why he wasn't offered.

The guy has never been a coordinator, much less an HC, and in this case, the CEO of a multi-million dollar operation. If his name was Smith or Jones and not Beamer, they would have never considered him. Yes, he was on the staff with SOS, but I wouldn't hire Spurrier Jr. for any job either.

Best man at my wedding is a Gamecock Club lifer, and is about to not renew over this, Tanner is completely clueless as an AD. Big time boosters aren't happy with it either. They are nearly $50 million in the hole, they won't be climbing out of that anytime soon.

We've been there, when dumbass Foley hired Zook and Duncechump with no HC experience. At least they both were coordinators at some point.

Urban Meyer & Dabo were never coordinators either.

But Urbs started at bowling green, not a P5 team. And I thought dabo was the OC while little bowden was HC?

Nope. They were both non-coordinators when they became head coaches. Also, Beamer has more than paid his dues. Urban rose through the ranks pretty quickly - other than serving as a GA at Ohio State he only spent 5 years as a P5 assistant (at ND) before landing the head coaching job. So when he got to UF he had only coached at 1 P5 school (other than his GA stint). Dabo was the WR coach.

Isnt this exactly what they said about Muschamp back in the day. Long time coordinator, worked under all the great coaches, destined to be the next best thing.....

So no coordinator or assistant should ever land a head coaching job? You have to start somewhere. Some pan out, some don't. Other than not having a "coordinator" title, he checks a lot of the boxes. And as previously mentioned, SC made overtures towards at least 5 sitting head coaches. One wanted too much money, the others didn't work out for one reason or another. They hired a former assistant who did quite well while he was there and has done even better since he left. Solid hire....for South Carolina.
