Trask has a better arm and release than Wuerffel. Accuracy? Hard to argue against Danny, but Trask is getting there and he’s being asked to make throws Wuerffel was not, again because of the relative arm talent.

I’ll just say this. It’s unimaginable what Trask could have accomplished in Spurrier’s offense. I doubt many people would say the same of Wuerffel working with Mullen.

the official stats didnt include post season until.... 2002 I think.

And they did not change the others retroactively.
Here are Danny's stats from the 1996 season. This comes from heisman.com. His 36 included the SECC. Screenshot_20201206-094344_Chrome.jpg

78, I agree, and I said before the season Trask would be the perfect Spurrier quarterback. He is accurate and coachable. The narrative on him would be different with Spurrier at coach. He also wouldn't have sat behind Franks for a little over a year, because of the difference in skill set.

As much as we want to talk about Trask vs Wuerfell they are truly two different eras of football, Trask is putting up unbelievable numbers. That '96 team had a running game and imagine what that '96 receiving corps could have done with the current limitations on defense. Can you imagine Ike, Reidel, Jacquez, etc.. all get free release and no one touching them after 5 yards.... those numbers were astronomical already, imagine what they would have been like against defenses they are playing now a days.

Before Saturday, Trask was supposedly the front-runner, but now Jones is. No idea why the change. Here's their respective stats lines from Saturday where both went up against bad teams.

Trask 35-49 433 Yds 4 TDs

Jones 20-28, 385 Yds, 4 TDs

Is the new love for Jones because he had better yds per att/comp?

better yds per att, undefeated team, and prime time games. More eyes have seen Jones play than Trask play. People will see the stat lines, but remember what they have seen more. People remember watching Wuerfell light up Alabama in the SECCG, people remember Tebow with the FSU endzone paint on his jersey after a touchdown run. The heisman moment is a real thing, if you watch a player you will rate them higher. Trask is being hurt by the lack of prime time games compared to Jones and Clemson qb.

exactly.

I just don't understand people making this absurd argument that defenses are better today. I suppose it's mostly people who weren't around then.

the rules always said no contact w receiver after five yards. I'm just not sure why defensive coordinators are allowing free releases. especially if you're a team that's blitzing a lot or whatever you'd want to cover the short stuff and not worry so much about a longer pass.

I agree with your point, but will be obnoxious about this the Tebow/endzone paint thing happened a year after Tebow won the Heisman. You're welcome.

That's true, also Dwayne Dixon (oregon) going down in 07 helped push Tebow to the front of the line, without having a legit upperclassman candidate.

I just noticed that Trask is currently 2nd in total yards passing. The QB ahead of him is UCF's QB who only has about a hundred more yards and does not have anymore regular season games. Basically, Trask is on pace to go to Atlanta and finish the season as the nation's leader in TD passes and total passing yards. Also, we haven't had a 3,000 yard passer since Tebow. Trask now has a legit shot at 4,000 yards passing this year. Who would've thought that would be even possible with a shortened all-conference schedule?

frankly I don't think it's been that tough.

the extra conference games have really worn on the teams with the worst depth. lack of four cupcakes has also meant that a lot of these three or four conference win teams are now struggling for 500. mentally that stuff on kids too. 7- 5 sounds a lot better than 3-7 and it's the same team. many on the two or three wins teams have checked out.

this arguably the easiest schedule we've ever had. it's certainly in the debate. and these are without a doubt the worst defenses the SEC has had a modern memory. the secondaries have been putrid for a long time though.

Trask had to go 2 games without his main weapon, Pitts. Sure, many say: "But he threw TDs to others." Still, had Pitts been in there, how many stalled drives would not have stalled and gotten more TDs?

You keep bagging on the SEC this year, but it’s still the best conference by a long shot. All the others suck out loud this year...even worse than usual.
