@FootballScoop: To the same firm that helped UT select him, right? Not strange at all….

In defense of White and the search firm, this is how they spent the last week...

Brian Johnson is a solid candidate and should take while the taking is good.. But in UCF best interest would be to get an AD and possibly wait a year because they are so close to NSD and the beginning of Spring.

The real national signing day is now in December
Nearly 90% of the recruits have already chosen a school and signed

I know, but at this point, all the really solid candidates are off the board, what is better for long term success, picking a quick hire, or taking the time to potentially get the right hire.

And with new transfer rules along with the 2021 freebie, NSD and Dec NSD is meaningless.

I'd swear that said TN is pulling together its 8 players to meet their new coach tonight. Because 8 is about all they have left.

I sincerely thought the same thing. I was like why are they only meeting with 8 players? Are those the players that they are trying to convince to stay?

Clearly I hadn't had my coffee yet this morning.

And I hadn't. #Truth.

They are at an interesting point. The right hire keeps building this up. The wrong hire burns it to the ground. However I think this is a message that they are still a stepping stone program and may want to try and find someone that isn't going to be stolen in 2 years. I think the Malzan hire sounds intriguing. Gimmick offense in that conference where he would have probably the best recruiting, but would he bolt for the first big time school. That being said I'm all for Johnson getting a real shot to start his HC career.

Probably the best hire they could've made. Not a great hire by any means, but the best they could do and a likely improvement from Pruitt. Not sure if he'll be able to recruit himself out of the massive hole ut has dug themselves in.

Being an Oklahoma guy I’ve always liked Heupel. Solid dude who came into a school that had ran some version of the Triple option or wishbone the season or 2 before and qb’d a legit air raid attack back when the only other places doing it were Hawaii and Kentucky. He was smart and is highly respected everywhere in OK to this day. I’m more concerned about this hire than most of y’all are.

@PeteThamel: Fun little Heupel fun fact here. He finished second in the 2000 Heisman behind current Tennessee QB coach Chris Weinke. (He'll likely be firing him soon.) And he finished one spot ahead of former Purdue QB Drew Brees. Some fun names on this list.

Tennessee must be feeling good. They have had a Champion of Life recently and now a fake National Champ coach!

How the crap did Tomlinson not win that year. Those numbers are ridiculous.

Another fun fact, Heupel will definitely be showing up as Fat Bastard in the Vol lookalike threads
