Sorry to hear of your kid with a substance abuse issue.

Like you, I was never an alcoholic. I was also never an addict. But then, one would have to actually try alcohol or drugs before one could become addicted to them. I'll be 57 next month and have never tried either. ;)

I have absolutely no issue with people moderately indulging in an adult beverage or recreational drugs. My interpretation of the Bible is..."as long as you keep a clear head". But I can't stand a drunk or a stoner.

I come from a family with very addictive behavior but I used that in my favor...I can usually just shut it off...addict myself to abstain...Like fasting. but I even have to be careful with too much chocolate...seriously.

My daughter is a functioning alcoholic and my sister is a recovering alcoholic. I've learned I can pray, love and support them but until they "WANT" to address it there is nothing I can/could do.

The libertarian in me says, "You're accountable for your own actions"

My parents raised me with strict religious beliefs that drugs (non prescription) and alcohol are just wrong. While I have watched commercials showing alcohol being poured into a glass and thought, "Man, that looks like it would taste great," I have also made the conscious decision that I won't put anything in my body that can alter my behavior to the extent that neither myself nor anyone else might be in danger. If I am going to do anything that might get me arrested, I won't be able to say, "the alcohol or drugs made me do it."

Hope your daughter and sister will want the help they need sooner rather than later. ;)

I have consumed an enormous amount of alcohol over the course of my life, often to the point of puking (purge and rally!) or browning out. When I was in Law School, I was usually drunk 6 nights a week.

As I got older, I get better at moderating it, but I'd still drink heavily 3-4 nights a week. Instead of getting hammered, I mastered getting to the buzz and keeping it going until last call. Even though I was technically an alcohol abuser, as much as I drank, I never, ever craved it.

Thank God I wasn't born with the addiction gene--not alcohol, not weed, not coffee, nothing (well, maybe I've craved carbs). It's a miracle I never got a DUI or got in an accident.

Since getting married, I don't hang out in bars all the time so I barely drink anymore. Not a conscious decision, just a fact. If I go out, I will drink, I just don't go out much.

I did a lot of stupid sh!t when I was younger.

- the beers that is.
Bad choice. Should have tried both.

It is American Privilege. We have such a shytty, racist terrible country that almost everyone in the world wants to move here. Even if you are in gray area of the yea or no zone, most furrinner wimmens will give you a try just in case it works out.

If only trees in Alabama were afforded such a protective policy.

The fact the Mrs. G was sitting next to me on this particular flight meant that was fairly unlikely. She is not the most open minded of women.

Yes, I can see that heing a problem.

@AlexDaGator could pull it off, but not most of us.

Alex could probably convince Mrs. GBM and three waitresses to have a fivesome with him.
