Here what they call “defense” ammo (and I called “service” ammo for 31+ years) is around $25 a box from certain sources. “Practice ammo” is $20 or so.

That is what I am used to paying too. I have been searching on line and in stores for the past 6 months with no success.

Went to the gun show last month. Bought 1000 rounds of .223 and 1000 rounds of 9mm ball ammo. Paid around 60cents a round for both.

Gonna have to practice head shots. Ammo is getting so expensive you can't afford to shoot anyone.

This is my favorite, but its not easy to conceal. AMT Hardballer .45 w/ a grip conversion kit for my XL hands
I don't have the laser sight.

For concealed carry, this is a good piece. Very compact, affordable, and functional. Made in Florida

if I carried something that large it sure wouldn't be a peashooter like a 45 acp.

There are some cool magnum 45 wildcats though.

Again, I'm in agreement with you guys, but here are my qualifiers:
  1. for ME, a "pocket pistol" is not bigger than my Ruger LCP. Anything larger than that in size and weight, while it can certainly fit in your pocket, is not a "pocket pistol" for me. For the LCP, in it's pocket sleeve, I don't even know it is there (seriously, in dress pants, i don't even feel the weight of it). i RARELY carry this way. For any other circumstance, there is no "in between" for me. As Law says, if I'm not in my "LCP mode", there is NO reason I cannot jump straight to the 3.75" or longer barrel length range, zero reason. For me, while I love a lot of pistols that fall in this category, there is absolutely no true need for any barrel length/size between my LCP and anything 3.75" or longer. None. A 3" barreled sub-compact is not a "pocket pistol" in my book.
  2. So then, as you allude to, the question is "what chambering for the true pocket pistol?" I agree with you to a large extent on the "exceeds 22 caliber" point. So it becomes a decision on lethality/incapacitation. Again, I'm not in the market for looking, but had there been a true .22, say 10+ round capacity pocket pistol, i MIGHT have considered it because for me personally, "proficiency" = "band of life," and with .22 recoil, i'm pretty sure i could have that accuracy in a pocket pistol. There is no way you can have my definition level of proficiency with how I define a "pocket pistol" when you start talking about 9mm (especially 9x19 or larger) chamberings... at BEST, we are talking dumping into center of mass, and most shooters would still have complete misses in doing so.
  1. This is how I approached the pocket pistol as well. I love the .22 and am confident in my ability to dome someone at self defense range. CCI Stingers (CCI Mini Mags if Stingers are in short supply) still leave the short barrel screaming with devastating effect on vitals, yet minimizes overpenetration as long as I hit the target. With 10+1 and familiar Ruger design, it was a no-brainer for me; Ruger LCP II .22lr:

I'm not a fan of 22. especially when you can get the same gun in 380. Get the highest quality ammo you can find, like CCI 's best stuff, and make very sure your gun likes it.

I have probably seen a thousand misfires out of rimfire guns for every one that I've seen out of the centerfire.

That is a valid concern. I'm fine with my LCPoriginal in .380 as a seldomly carried, dump and run piece.

I understand that sentiment. My particular gun runs the ammo I use with no issues. I trust it and know how to clear it should a round fail. Even though it's CCI premium ammo, it's still a dirty cartridge, so keeping the gun clean is a must.

22lr ammo has come a long way. Stay with the good stuff and you'll find it's damn near as reliable as centerfire ammo. I love the low recoil of 22 and my ability to place shots where I want them with fast follow up shots. However, I would never presume to recommend someone else to carry it. The important thing is to have a plan, be prepared, and practice practice practice.

Yes, for sure.

My experience is the opposite, particularly with Remington, Winchester, and Federal bulk ammo. 20 years ago I'd buy that stuff anf it would run just fine, mostly in Rugers and Marlins.

Today, 1: 10 dud is fairly common. Production moved to China, India or.some other shythole and the quality is crap. I never had good luck with CCI stinger in certain guns (length issue), but most other CCI was flawless.

I've never really had trouble with 22 magnum ammo. They just don't seem to avoid cutting corners as much in 22 Magnum. If for some reason I needed a rimfire handgun for defense, it would probably be a magnum. If you have enough barrel, there is a noticeable difference in velocity.

Here's a professional tip: don't run; just walk away at good, but not hurried pace. And as Clemenza said, "And don't look nobody in the face, but you don't look away either."

I find the CCI 36 grain Mini Mags will work in just about anything. The 40 grain Velocitors (CCI) are nice, but I can rarely find it nowadays.

stole this from the box.
this story is going to get a bit ugly though - multiple reports are saying the “good Samaritan” was actually killed by the police…he was a CC and involved himself trying to take out the gunman.

Arvada shooting victims: Officer Gordon Beesley, 'hero' John Hurley
It's a very real danger for cc or for plain clothes cops. I wish they would emphasize it a little more in CC classes to immediately make yourself look like a good guy as soon as possible after having to shoot the bad guy.

Being a little more quick w re-holstering and going hands-up or at least checking the muzzle up or down. Cops can often recognize other cops just by the way they move and act. Just doing something like tucking your cover shirt in or taking it off to showing that you have a holster and a magazine pouch helps send the message of "friendly" to the responding uniform police.

Criminals almost never carry holsters, they don't raise their muzzles, keep the trigger off the finger etc. they don't teach muzzle and trigger discipline in criminal school.
