ESPN's Dan Orlovsky had the audacity to go on Pat McAfee's show and report rumors that there were questions about tOSO QB Justin Field's work ethic.

Orlovsky apparently made clear that he had no firsthand knowledge and was only repeating what others were saying. In fact, the next day he posted a video saying he had heard from other sources that the work ethic questions about Fields were overblown.

But former tOSU QB Kirk Herbstreit was -- shockingly! -- not happy about Orlovsky doing his job as a sports reporter by reporting what was being said about a sports personality.

Here's a short story about the kerfuffle from Ryan Phillips from The Big Lead.

Color me misinformed if needed but please clarify for me why Herbstreit was so defensive.

Was he embarrassing himself because there was criticism of a buckeye QB or because someone had the audacity to criticize an African American QB?

Given this era of social delirium it’s hard to figure out why these days

It's because no one can ever criticize Justin Fields ever again. You don't know his pain. You've never been in a football stadium with 95,000 other people and one of them say n****r.

You are right. I now feel tremendous remorse for having even asked the question.

I didn’t realize you guys hated Herbstreit to such a degree. I’ve never saw him being more of a homer than any other alumnus on TV. I think it’s petty for networks to not allow those calling the games to show a bias. Of course you’re rooting for the school you attended and probably still contribute to monetarily. Only our players leave and stop representing the brand. It’s almost hard to tell Palmer went to school here nowadays. I find that more offensive than someone who’s being biased.

I don’t think that his buckeye bias has anything to do with the attitudes towards Herbie. Read the full thread and I think you will get it

I don't generally have much issue with him. As you said, I think he's naturally going to be a bit of a homer and I'm ok with that. But I also think there's a time and place. The pic of him excited when Ginn is returning the kickoff against us makes sense. In that moment, he's really just a fan and isn't expecting to be on camera. Even his slant at times is tolerable for me. This is a little different, imo. I actually think it's pointless for Olovsky to share unsubstantiated "reports" personally. It was going to backfire, and he seems to have caved to the pressure. But it's even worse for a grown man to be that up in arms about it, not to mention the "crying laughing" emojis. He sounds like he's 16. Agree with the reports or not, that's the only part that's "embarrassing".

Where there is smoke there is usually fire. The phrase used in the initial rumors questioning Fields' work ethic was that with respect to his presence at tOSU's football facility during the season, he was a "last in, first out" type of player. Everybody knows what that means but it's not a common expression. I think it's very unlikely that somebody used that particular phrase with no basis, and just fabricated the accusation out of whole cloth.

I mentioned after watching the Alabama game that I really think he's going to be a bust, particularly with how high he's being forecasted. If he doesn't have a ton of talent around him, he seems very pedestrian to me. I honestly didn't see anything that wowed me. And the entire uga saga, while we got a laugh out of it, was insulting to anyone who looked at it objectively. So it wouldn't shock me to hear that his work ethic is suspect. I just don't think there's anything to be gained by voicing it, especially in today's environment. But as I said, feeling the need to run to his aid via Twitter, on the heels of the faux tears things last fall, is cringeworthy.

I don't mind Herbstreit being a homer one bit. I've actually always liked listening to him and have always though he was 10 times better than Palmers weaselly sounding ass. But once that mother fuchsers went on national tv and cried and basically called us all racist fuchs him, his whole family and his school.
