I’m very glad to see this. I really want Noah Gurley next. I think he will be a great fit. Then go after a big.
This.

We lose quite a bit of frontcourt size in payne and osifo.

I wonder what type of a basketball team we fans actually want. Do we want a team of recruits with very few transfers like we used to have (I know the portal has changed things) or do we want a one and done type of team.

For myself I would rather not be a championship type team and have real Gators on it but the opinions of other posters would be interesting to me.

Comment as you desire.

Men's Final Four Teams Reflect How Transfers Have Taken Control

Very interesting on how the Final 4 teams relied VERY heavily on transfers and in most cases were their stars of the team like Baylor star Mitchell. White pulling in some top flight transfers but can they gel with each other and with the coaches? Right now its looking like a 14-16 win team which gets us on the bubble so that is not good at all.

It's an added wrinkle, for sure, but coaches have been figuring out to take one n done type talents and gel them into a capable team come tournament time. Hate to say it, but that's been Kentucky's model for the last 8~ years, with Duke, UNC, and others adopting elements of it too. Now, coaches are figuring out how to win via the transfer portal and getting high-talent, more mature players to fit their schemes. Good coaches win with elite talent.

First we have to understand that as long as one is not required to sit out a year...,the portal will be loaded. This year over 1100 players in there. We would be foolish not to pursue available talent.

I never consider a transfer any less a Gator. We have had several players come on board in football and basketball who were great Gators. Castleton being the latest in bball.

Third the higher the talent the greater the chance they leave early for the pro’s. Getting a one and done or a two and done (Mann, Lewis) doesn’t make them more Gator than someone coming in with 1 or 2 years of eligibility.

Given MW has had tremendous difficulty assessing high school talent effectively but does real well with transfer talent I have no problem with it.

In the end I would like to see balance. Recruit top end HS players but grab a quality transfer when available. I wouldn’t mind going back to having to sit a year.

Read this morning that the portal is now approaching 1500 kids. With 350 or so schools that’s 4+ per school. Right now we have 4 that transferred out so we are in line with many others.

Of the near 1500 I wonder how many would not have entered the portal if you had to sit out a year?

They're gonna have to change the rule back to a 1 year sit out. The only way around it.

Agreed....this is crazy. I wonder how many kids will not get picked up out of the portal and then find their old team no longer has a spot for them?

Hopefully, tons of them so they quit this free agency BS.

Isn't the transfer portal demanding that we Florida Gator fans transfer our rootings to too many non-Gators? I mean it forces us to bond to Mike White as a good UF coach when he's coaching players that got their development under other (better?) coaches. Yes, I will enjoy having a winning team carried out by "not homeboys" but there is some kind of hypocrisy in it all. ?? Are we not having our very definition of school loyalty rearranged, diminished, diluted?

Will this not push "the kid who originally wanted to be a Florida Gator", push that process to extinction? Am I to look forward to Gators that play better fundamentals because they were developed by non-Gator coaches. ?? Are we forgetting all those years we "disaddmired" Calipari for his mercenaries of well- established school loyalty?

Anyway, that's just sports philosophy. I will be whooping my head off watching better Gator basketball from an unimproved coach. Remember White has actually coached athletes into diminished skills in the past. Basketball analysts are already writing "transfer so & so" is binging a set of skills the Gators have never had before. White isn't embracing "go Gators" but "gone Gators". After all that doubt & negativity, I'd like to welcome all newgators. I am excited and hope that y'all perform like a non-MW team. Can't wait to see the influx of new talent perform in a fundamental winning style. Hey, where'd that come from?? :D

As I think everyone has agreed....they need to get a handle on this free agency. 1500 kids are trying to depart from the coaches that brought them in initially. If these coaches are so great why are so many trying to leave?

My belief is that many leave for more playing time rather than battle to earn it. All these that end up in lower tier programs are looking for playing time. Some like Locke leave because they want to play a different position. Some like Nembhard leave for a better situation and a shot at a NC. Some just don’t like their coach.

You also have to look at the programs they are leaving. If those coaches are so good why are they not winning championships? Why are they not being recruited to coach at power 5 schools? Why are their players leaving?

This is simply out of control and will not stop until they reinstate the rule requiring sitting out a year.

I will have no problem rooting for our 3 transfers. They are Gators.

Marine1, I usually agree with you, but I’m a freedom guy, so disagree with the “sit out a year” rule. Coaches need to be more realistic with recruits about playing time and position, and need to develop players to be their best. If they do that, and if a bevy of players entering the portal end up at lesser schools than expected, or worse, are left with no place to play as all spots are filled, the problem will be somewhat self-correcting as players learn the life lesson that the grass isn’t always greener elsewhere and that there are consequences for bad decisions.

I can’t really say I don’t see that side of the argument as well. After a couple of years of this it probably would self correct to some degree. I’m probably overreacting to these current numbers. But it is frustrating to see. Lots of bad advice is being given to these kids.

It’s just today’s culture. Instant gratification needed.

There's no way this transfer thing benefits the home team?? Look at that Tom Brady fiasco? You think they embrace him as one of theirs in Tampa?
