Self checkout question

Yesterday I went to checkout in a Big Box store with but a single item. I went to self checkout. I usually pay cash for small purchases, so when asked cash or card? by the clerk, I said "cash". The clerk said that I would have to go to an open cash register or to Customer Service (very long lines!). This store formerly had machines that took cash and has removed them.
1) Has anyone else had this experience?
2) Does anyone understand why this is effective business practice?
3) How long before cash is illegal?

1) yes, when the machines have hit the threashold of not having enough cash for change, or haven't had cash loaded for change yet.

2) people who check out with card are statistically faster

3) It's been going that way for 3 decades, its just a matter of time. only approximately 20% of all money is cash, most of currency is electronic.

Saw him live about 5 years ago... laughed so hard.
I think we’ve had this conversation before. I also saw him live right after his season on Last Comic Standing as a bunch of them did their tour. I too laughed so hard.

So, I figure how much I would be paid for the 10 minute gig at the self checkout at my standard consulting rate and then simply put items in the cart without scanning them that add up to that amount. Of course I do report that as income on my income tax form.

I still use cash for most small purchases, if possible. I get $200 from the ATM and reload when that runs out. I still use my debit card for buying gas, groceries, and bigger purchases, but I like having cash on me. Plus, the weed stores only take cash. :bandit:

I will not use the self-check registers. IMO, that is putting someone out of a job that might desperately need one. I will either wait in line for a cashier to check me out or I will put the item(s) that I intended to purchase down (so that some other employee can gather them up and put them back on the shelf) and leave.

Our Walmart's are almost without cashiers now. Only two lane even capable.

Lowes, Walmart and other stores similar don't want you to checkout quickly. They want you to roam the store as much as possible and/or pick up some fattening junk while you are in line. Most of the cash registers are unattended. It's one of their cheap little con games.

It’s true here as well. Where do they accept a credit or debit card?

Not all non cash transaction are by debit or credit card.

Florida. I have never paid with cash. Look up CanPay.

The WalMark out here on Kauai rarely ever has 2 cashiers working the registers at one time. They really want the customers to use the self-checkout. And there is an employee standing at the exit that checks EVERY receipt.

CanPay is the only debit payment app that allows you to pay for your purchases at cannabis retailers with a simple debit to your checking account when you make a purchase.

Interesting. I haven’t seen it before and not used here but interesting.

We use shop n scan. Using the store app, we scan our items and put them into our own bags. Then we go to the self check out and transfer the scanned items to the kiosk. Dude comes over and verifies 3-5 of the items at random as being scanned. We can pay with cash or credit and off we go.

If I had my choice I would use self checkout everywhere vs standing in line while granny chats with the checkout girl who happens to be granny's third cousin twice removed who hasn't heard the latest family gossip about cousin jethro who just got caught holding becky's hand at the football game while his girlfriend edna may was home sick with pink eye. Of course most folks know its not pink eye, but she was hung over on account of her being a drunk hussy, but that don't mean jethro should go round with that blonde home wreckin floozie, becky.....
