Most deer on any property I have had access too. Lots of hogs and I have seen a few turkeys, too.

Bonus is listening to quail whistle in the mornings and evenings.
I still have two wild coveys on the farm, off limits to everyone including me. Very few hogs here but they are coming. Turkeys are all I could ever ask for and my freezer always has plenty of deer.

I hunted in Jackson county when I lived in Albertville, AL back in the mid 90's, never managed to kill a deer there.
Then you know where the farm is, between Collinsville and Sandrock-Leesburg. I hunted Little Coon Hollow some up around Stevenson in Jackson County but much prefer Lookout Mtn and Cherokee Co. The Dekalb and Cherokee couty line runs through the farm.

Pretty good Thanksgiving weekend at the deer camp.

I got a nice 8 point. One of my fellow hunters got a giant 6 point. imagejpeg_2.jpg

I always love to hear my owls... right in those moments the light is waning and it is otherwise stone cold silent, because, well, the animal kingdom knows it's a dangerous time.

An owl hoot will make a wild turkey gooble off the roost. One can then position himself better before daylight and possibly call him in.

As I am not a hunter, these are the hunting tidbits I find most fascinating. (I grew up in an urban environment where the biggest wild mammal was probably a possum and the biggest bird was a grackle - though as the nearby river has become much cleaner over the years, big birds like eagles are now more common.)
Forgive this question if it’s a dumb one, but will an owl go after a turkey? I always figured they were too big for an owl. If not, why does the turkey get spooked.

Here are a few pics of my dove hunt back in September. It was a great hunt...birds everywhere.

This is the view from the blink out of which I shot that buck. This was taken about 10 min before he popped out from the left just behind that pine tree.

This is from my favorite stand on the property. Its an old tobacco barn with the top boards pulled off. A platform stand was built inside.

Yes...an owl will take down a turkey. I've never seen it, but I don't turkey hunt and haven't been around them too much. But friends of mine who are eat up with turkeys and hunting them say owls will take them out of their roost easily.

Other things people do around here during the early spring before turkey season is they will go out to their property just after dawn and slam tailgates real loud and try to get them to shock gobble.

An owl will not go after a mature turkey ( not sure about Great Horned). They will certainly go after young ones after the hatch until they grow large enough to make the energy expended more than the energy received when harvesting one. An eagle will go after any turkey. I have been a witness to it a few times and it's a treasured memory.
